New Trader Joe's opens across the street from existing location, puzzling the internet
Trader Joe's recently opened a store in California that has social media in a tizzy. According to Trader Joe's website, it opened a store in Sherman Oaks, California, on June 6. Social media users were quick to point out a particular quirk about the store; it is directly across the street from an existing Trader Joe's location. "We've had a great relationship with our customers in Sherman Oaks for 52 years, and we plan to keep both stores open," Trader Joe's spokesperson Nakia Rohde said in an emailed statement to USA TODAY on June 17. Rohde elaborated that the company's goal is always to bring "delicious products at great values to as many people as we can," and that the best way to do that is to open more stores. Rohde pointed out the new store "is bigger and has an attached underground parking lot." Trader Joe's website shows both stores sell many of the same items, including alcohol, fresh produce, bakery items and meat, among other items. The new store is located at 14140 Riverside Drive in Sherman Oaks, while the older store is located at 14119 Riverside Drive. Social media puzzled by location of new Trader Joe's store In a recent TikTok video filmed in front of the new Trader Joe's location, content creator Evan Lovett points out just how close the two stores are to each other. Lovett notes that Trader Joe's is a beloved California institution before slowly panning the camera around to reveal the "original Trader Joe's in Sherman Oaks is directly across the street, less than 100 yards away." Lovett films himself walking through the new Trader Joe's location, calling it "beautiful" and "modern" before pointing out the location's surprising "ample parking." In a TikTok posted on June 7, user @ShavsPaper also jokes about the proximity of the two Trader Joe's stores. The post has gotten over 68,000 views and over 3,000 likes. New Trader Joe's opens across the street from existing location
By Trader Joe's customers were confused after a new California location opened right across the street from another. A new store opened at 14140 Riverside Drive in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles, on June 6. However there was already an existing Trader Joe's location only about 100 yards away - at 14119 Riverside Drive. 'Maybe we are living in a simulation, because that seems like a glitch in the matrix,' a TikTok user commented on a video of the two stores posted by ShavsPaper. One TikToker claimed that the original store is one of the busiest in the state, so the retailer is testing the two spots. Another claimed the opening of the new store was delayed, so the chain had to re-sign the lease for the old location. Trader Joe's has not confirmed the reason, but the chain is planning to operate both of them. 'We've had a great relationship with our customers in Sherman Oaks for 52 years, and we plan to keep both stores open,' Trader Joe's spokesperson Nakia Rohde told Many shoppers 'don't see the problem' with two stores and believe multiple locations are a 'win-win' when looking for popular items like its viral mini tote bags. L.A. in a Minute host Evan Lovett had nothing but good things to say about the new location last week in a TikTok video. 'It's modern, it's spacious, it's got an expanded freezer and refrigerated section. It's a great store,' he said. Lovett also pointed out that it has a separate parking garage, unlike the other Riverside Drive store. 'The smaller Trader Joe's wasn't crowded and all the stuff was in there. I parked with no issue for the first time ever on a Sunday,' a shopper claimed on TikTok. A few shoppers insisted the older location is superior even though it makes some customers feel 'claustrophobic.' 'Who wants to park your car in a garage that you need a ticket for?! Then get into a small elevator! Just wait until it gets crowded w/all those new apartments in that complex!,' a person commented. '[expletive] no, I won't go. The old one is fantastic: You get in and out in minutes, and the staff is fantastic,' another shopper responded. Others insisted they would visit the new store when they had a chance but would continue visiting the other one now that it will be 'mostly empty.' Founded in 1967, Trader Joe's has become a supermarket empire in the US operating about 600 locations. The chain made headlines last year after its tote bags became the talk of TikTok. Shoppers began reselling its Mini Insulated Totes for $100 on eBay , and customers would line up around the block just to get their hands on the $3 bags. Trader Joe's brings back bags from time to time, and shoppers were in a frenzy last March after its $4 collapsible totes returned to stores. The chain is in the process of opening nearly two dozen locations across 13 states, the first bunch launching a few months ago.

Thrifty Ice Cream to Close Over 500 Stores Nationwide
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Thrifty Ice Cream locations are closing nationwide as Rite Aid winds down its assets amid bankruptcy proceedings. As reported by The Street, the 500 hand-scooped ice cream counters inside Rite Aid stores across the country will shutter by default as a result of the pharmacy chain filing for Chapter 11 protections in early May. Newsweek has contacted Thrifty Ice Cream for more details on the closures. Why It Matters While Thrifty Ice Cream remains available for purchase at stand-alone stores and counters in other retailers across the country, the move marks a significant hit for the ice cream brand. An image of Thrifty Ice Cream products. An image of Thrifty Ice Cream products. Rite Aid Corporation What To Know The Los Angeles-based ice cream brand, which launched in 1940, can be found at thousands of retailers and stand-alone locations across the U.S. In 1996, Rite Aid acquired the brand, and the circular scoop ice cream has since become a staple at its West Coast pharmacies. Now facing its second bankruptcy in as many years, Rite Aid plans to close hundreds of its roughly 1,200 locations. In addition to selling its stores to pay down debts, Rite Aid is set to auction off its intellectual property and assets, which includes its Thrifty Ice Cream businesses and the factory in El Monte, California. As a result, a buyer could purchase Thrifty and continue distributing the ice cream to grocery chains and at ice cream counters. In 2018, the brand was almost sold along with Rite Aid to food and drug retailer Albertsons, but the deal was abandoned. According to Reuters, Rite Aid's previous Chapter 11 filing in October 2023 allowed the company to eliminate $2 billion in debt, close hundreds of stores and reach settlements with both lenders and plaintiffs in various lawsuits. What People Are Saying Evan Lovett, the host of L.A. in a Minute, said in a video posted on X, formerly Twitter: "If history is any guide, Thrifty Ice Cream is going to be scooping up smiles for years to come, just maybe not at your local Rite Aid." Rite Aid CEO Matt Schroeder said in a statement earlier this month: "While we have continued to face financial challenges, intensified by the rapidly evolving retail and healthcare landscapes in which we operate, we are encouraged by meaningful interest from a number of potential national and regional strategic acquirors. As we move forward, our key priorities are ensuring uninterrupted pharmacy services for our customers and preserving jobs for as many associates as possible." What Happens Next According to court documents, Rite Aid is soliciting offers for its assets, and potential buyers are required to submit indications of interest for assets such as Thrifty by Friday. Sale hearings are set to take place in late June.

With many Rite Aid stores closing, is Thrifty Ice Cream in danger?
With many Rite Aid stores closing, a big question for nostalgic ice cream lovers is: What happens to all that beloved Thrifty Ice Cream? Hat tip to the amazing Evan Lovett of LA in a Minute, who recently highlighted Los Angeles' love affair with the iconic cylindrical scoops and the history behind them. Thrifty launched in 1940 in West Hollywood. By the 1970s, the company says, Thrifty Ice Cream had 'attained cult status along the West Coast, with significant celebrity shoutouts.' And it's still a hot topic. Start typing 'Thrifty Ice Cream' into Google, and the top searches include: Why is Thrifty Ice Cream so good? Why is Thrifty Ice Cream so cheap? Does Thrifty Ice Cream still exist? It's that last question that has people concerned. What customers can expect as Rite Aid closes or sells all its drugstores Following Evan's lead, we reached out to both Thrifty and Rite Aid. We've been tracking pharmacy closures for months. In February, Rite Aid told KTLA: 'Rite Aid regularly assesses its retail footprint to ensure we are operating efficiently while meeting the needs of our customers, communities, associates and overall business.' But what about the ice cream? We asked again this week—specifically about Thrifty Ice Cream—and received a statement from Rite Aid that didn't mention Thrifty at all. The company told KTLA: 'After considering all alternatives, the only viable path forward for Rite Aid is to once again commence Chapter 11 proceedings. We will use this process to pursue a sale of our prescriptions, pharmacy and front-end inventory, and other assets…' Still no word on the ice cream. So we went directly to Thrifty. Our questions included: How many Thrifty Ice Cream counters will remain, and where? What other retail locations still carry Thrifty? Are there any plans for expansion? So far, no answers—just an ice cream mystery. Here's what we do know: Yes, the factory in El Monte is still producing the beloved ice cream. And yes, you can still find tubs at local supermarkets, including Vons, Albertsons, Pavilions and some Bristol Farms locations. Those grocery stores may be your best bet moving forward, as neither company is offering much clarity. And yes—Thrifty says you can open your own ice cream shop and sell Thrifty Ice Cream, complete with the iconic cylindrical scoop. Fun fact: Thrifty says it taste-tests hundreds of new flavors each year and has even created exclusive custom flavors like Sriracha Swirl and Bacon & Cheddar. The big question now: Where will you be able to get them? It likely won't be Rite Aid. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
