Detroit Tigers linked to Cy Young caliber closer from Cleveland
The Detroit Tigers are ready for the second half of the 2025 MLB season, but there is still more work on the horizon. Detroit needs to solidify its bullpen before the MLB trade deadline on July 31, with the most notable need being an elite closer. The Tigers' bullpen has struggled lately, specifically against the Seattle Mariners, and reinforcements are needed. Several players, such as David Bednar and Aroldis Chapman, have been mentioned as possible trade targets. However, could Detroit pull off a stunning in-division trade that features a Cy Young caliber closer from the Cleveland Guardians? According to the Detroit Free Press' Evan Petzold on his podcast Days of Roar, Cleveland closer Emmanuel Clase would be an elite option for the Tigers to solidify the back end of their bullpen for a run to the World Series. Clase, 27, has been mentioned in trade rumors and could bring a massive haul to Cleveland. Emmanuel Clase mentioned as possible target for Detroit Tigers The 27-year-old closer is under team control through the 2028 season, and despite the dip in numbers, he's still performing well. However, what did Petzold specifically say about the Tigers' need for an elite reliever? 'You still have another couple of weeks until the July 31st trade deadline to assess the situation, check out what you have internally, and then make trades,' Petzold said. 'Like if the [Detroit Tigers] were in a division race, maybe we'd be talking about how they need to make a trade right now. But they're going to win the AL Central. But when the July 31st trade deadline rolls around, I think Tigers fans should expect an all-star caliber reliever.' 'I'm talking Emmanuel Clase of the Cleveland Guardians, Jhoan Duran of the Minnesota Twins, Mason Miller of the Athletics, David Bednar of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Felix Bautista of the Baltimore Orioles, Ryan Helsley of the St. Louis Cardinals, Aroldis Chapman of the Boston Red Sox. You can't expect to win the World Series without one of those guys. So if the expectation is to win the World Series, then it's fair to expect the Tigers to trade for one of those names I just mentioned.' Clase would be a hard get as Cleveland would have to play against him in Detroit for the next several years, but a hefty trade package could do the job. The Tigers need to find a way to acquire an elite closer to elevate their chances of winning a World Series, and Clase would be the perfect pitcher to push all the chips to the middle of the Headlines 6 NASCAR Prospects Who Could be Future Stars in the Cup Series Expert: Phillies, Mets and Tigers Have Prospects to Battle for Three-Time All-Star at Trade Deadline 'High-Risk, High-Reward': Why Rob Manfred is Bypassing Union Leadership to Court Players Double Payday: Damian Lillard Gets $70M From Blazers and Bucks While Missing 2025-26 Season

Tarik Skubal ‘all but guaranteed' to leave Detroit Tigers after 2026
Tarik Skubal is arguably the best pitcher in the world right now. Over the last 1.5 years, Skubal has won the AL Cy Young award and completed the AL Triple Crown in pitching. The Detroit Tigers are lucky to have the 28-year-old pitcher on their roster; however, could the partnership be nearing an end soon? According to Detroit Free Press' Evan Petzold on his podcast, Days of Roar, Skubal is 'all but guaranteed' to leave the Tigers after the 2026 MLB season. The AL Cy Young Award winner is set to become a free agent after 2026, where he is looking to become the highest-paid pitcher in MLB history. Detroit has tried to extend Skubal, but it wasn't enough to make him sign the contract. If the former ninth-round pick in the 2018 MLB Draft doesn't find what he wants in Detroit, other big-market teams, such as the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees, would likely pay him. For now, the Tigers have to maximize the two-year window with Skubal on the roster because it could be the final two years. Skubal is a generational pitcher, and Detroit has to find a way to win the World Series with him leading the way. The Tigers hope to extend Skubal before he hits free agency, but it's starting to feel more unlikely by the Headlines Shane Gillis Tricks ESPYs Crowd with Fake WNBA Star Joke, League Likely Unamused Boston Red Sox Reportedly Covet All-Star Bat from AL Rival at Trade Deadline 3 NHL teams linked to Sidney Crosby for potential trade in 2025 Livvy Dunne Gives an Inside Look at that 'Iconic' Split on the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Runway

Detroit Tigers Announce Big Alex Lange News Tuesday
Detroit Tigers Announce Big Alex Lange News Tuesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Detroit Tigers lost starting pitcher Jackson Jobe to a season-ending injury on his right elbow recently, prompting concerns about the team's pitching staff headed toward the second half of the 2025 season. Advertisement The Tigers' starting rotation and bullpen suddenly seems significantly thinner now that the power arm Jobe has been sidelined. On Tuesday, word broke that a well known Tigers reliever is headed to High-A West Michigan to began a rehab assignment with the White Caps, the precursor to a possible return to the big league level this season. Lange had a solid first four seasons of his MLB career with the Tigers, compiling ERAs of 4.04, 3.69, 3.68 and 4.34. He has yet to pitch a game this season after appearing in 21 games with Detroit in 2024. Advertisement The Tigers currently have the tenth best ERA in the Major Leagues and have witnessed a strong season from the bullpen so far as Detroit is second in MLB in saves. Detroit is near the middle of the pack among all MLB teams with 18 home runs given up. Its staff ranks 10th in MLB with 619 on the season, fifth among American League teams. Detroit's recent blowout loss to the Cincinnati Reds showed there may be more than a few chinks in the armor of manager AJ Hinch's team. If the Tigers get Lange back from injury this season, it may soften the blow they sustained when Jobe went to the IL for Tommy John surgery. Tigers Share Injury News on Starting Pitcher Reese Olson Tuesday
Tigers Share Injury News on Starting Pitcher Reese Olson Tuesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Detroit Tigers took on the Pittsburgh Pirates Tuesday night, jumping out to a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning as Casey Mize battled Bailey Falter of the Pirates in the night's pitching duel. Advertisement The Pirates leapt ahead on a third inning RBI single hit off of a fastball that Mize left up in the zone, giving Pittsburgh an early 3-2 lead at Comerica Park. The day included a flurry of updates from Tigers reporter Evan Petzold, who shared eight separate mini reports on several well known Tigers either working towards a return or having work done on them with a return in mind in the case of starting pitcher Jackson Jobe. One player given an update was starting pitcher Reese Olson, who has pitched in nine games with Detroit so far this season. Olson's return, along with the potential return of key relief pitcher Alex Lange, could be clutch for the Tigers as they seek to maintain Major League Baseball's best record heading toward the second half of the 2025 season. Advertisement Olson has started and played in nine games total this season for manager AJ Hinch's team with an ERA of 2.96 in 48 innings pitched. He's given up 38 hits and struck out 51 batters this season, strong numbers for a player Detroit will likely count on to fill in for the injured Jobe for the rest of this season.
