Haydos recalled from retirement for Qatar's 2026 World Cup Qualification Playoffs

Tribune News Network Doha Hassan Al Haydos, who led Qatar at FIFA World Cup 2022 following their fairytale Asian Cup triumph in 2019, has come back from his retirement from the national team to lead Al Annabi through the 2026 World Cup Qualification Playoffs. The Qatar Football Association (QFA) in a statement on Saturday said that Al Haydos will be rejoining the squad for the 2026 World Cup Qualification Playoffs at the request of coach Julen Lopetegui. It stated: 'Hassan Al Haydos is at the forefront of the national team squad for the 2026 World Cup qualification playoffs, in a positive move responding to coach Julen Lopetegui's request to strengthen the team with experienced players. 'His presence is expected to bring both technical and emotional value, providing leadership and support in the pursuit of the big dream that will delight Al Annabi's fans the dream of securing a place at the World Cup.' A cool forward, Al Haydos has so far made 183 appearances for Qatar since his debut in 2008 scoring 41 goals. He had also been a part of Qatar U23 and U20 squads. The 33-year-old had announced his retirement from the national team on 16th March 2024. Last week, Qatar Stars League champions Al Sadd had announced the renewal of their captain Al Haydos' contract. One of the best Qatari footballers over the years, Al Haydos has been with Al Sadd since 1998. Al Haydos has been at the heart of Al Sadd's success for more than two decades. He rose through the club's youth system before making his senior debut in the 2006–2007 season. Since then, he has played a vital role in guiding the team to numerous domestic and continental triumphs, including league titles and the AFC Champions League. The club had emphasized the desire to retain the veteran player in recognition of his immense contributions, leadership, and unwavering loyalty to the team. 'I thank the club for their trust and the renewal of the contract. I am very happy at Al Sadd, which is my home,' Al Haydos had said. 'Leadership is a responsibility, and the Al Sadd players are like my brothers. We have been playing together for a long time. Our goal as a family is one — to always keep Al Sadd at the top.' Qatar's hopes of qualifying for the 2026 tournament rests on the play-offs after the team finished fourth in their third-round qualifying group, missing out on an automatic berth. The teams that placed third and fourth in each of the three third-round groups will be regrouped into two new pools for the next stage. The stakes remain high - top teams from each group will go straight to the World Cup, while the second-placed sides will move on to the fifth and final round of qualification. The fourth-round draw is slated for July 17, with matches kicking off in October.

Juventus Clinches 4-1 Victory Over Wydad in Decisive FIFA Club World Cup Match

Rabat – Juventus won its game against Wydad Casablanca in a decisive Group G match at the FIFA Club World Cup, as the Moroccan club continues to struggle in a challenging campaign. Juventus controlled the match with 4-1, but Wydad Casablanca certainly maintained flashes of attempts and quality. The first three goals in the match were scored by Juventus forward K. Yildiz, who made several dangerous attempts and plays throughout the game. However, FIFA officially recorded one of the goals as an own goal by Wydad defender Abdelnouaim Boutouil, who was positioned close to the goal area and is believed to have made contact with the ball as Yildiz's shot came through in the sixth minute of the game. Wydad Casablanca scored its first and only goal in the match and the tournament in the 25th minute of the game through Thembinkosi Lorch. The goal came after a stunning assist from FIFA World Cup 2022 semifinalist Nordin Amrabat. Juventus' fourth goal came as a penalty in the last minutes of the game. The match proved to be dramatic as Juventus continued its relentless attacks on one end and Wydad felt the weight of pressure. The club's goalkeeper, El Mehdi Benabid, made several crucial saves, keeping his team in the game, preventing multiple goals from finding the net. Benabid's heroic performance, however, was not enough to spare Wydad from another defeat. Wydad Casablanca showed the same resilience against English giant Manchester City earlier this week on Wednesday. While the national club suffered a 2-0 defeat in its opener match, it was celebrated for its quality of play, particularly the coach's performance. El Mehdi Benabid rescued his team from decisive and strong strikes from Erling Haaland and many other superstars from Manchester City. Meanwhile, Nordin Amrabat led a successful defense campaign, contributing to the club's fierce response to tackle Manchester City's counterattacks. Tags: 2025 FIFA Club World CupWydad AC

AFC Asian Cup qualifiers — Former Australia manager Graham Arnold set to become Iraq coach

Former Australia boss Graham Arnold will be presented as the new Iraq coach this weekend ahead of next month's crunch World Cup qualifiers against South Korea and Jordan, a senior member of the Iraqi Football Association said on Thursday. Ahmed Al-Mousawi, the IFA official responsible for negotiating the contract of the previous coach Jesus Casas, told the Iraqi News Agency that the deal was almost done. 'Graham's contract details are almost finalised and will be announced officially upon his arrival,' he said. 'Arnold will bring with him a fully integrated technical staff of seven coaches, including an internationally renowned assistant who has previously worked with an English Premier League club.' Arnold led the Socceroos to the round of 16 of FIFA World Cup 2022, where they lost a close game to eventual champion Argentina, but quit last September after a poor start to the third round of qualifiers for the 2026 finals. The defeat left Iraq third in Asian Group B, a point adrift of a top-two spot and the automatic ticket to the finals in North America that goes with it. Iraq host group leaders South Korea in Basra on June 5 and second-placed Jordan in Amman five days later. Third and fourth place in the group offer a path to the finals through a fourth stage of Asian qualifying. 'The coach will meet with the players very shortly, as he will give the Iraqi Federation the full opportunity to set up a training camp in Basra Governorate, in preparation for the match against the South Korean national team, followed by another match against the Jordanian national team,' Al-Mousawi added. The Iraqis have appeared at only one edition of the World Cup finals in Mexico in 1986, when they lost all three games to go out in the group stage.
