SST expansion on private kindergartens has minimal impact on parents
KUALA LANGAT: The recent expansion of the Sales and Services Tax (SST) will not significantly burden parents sending children to private nurseries, kindergartens, or preschools, according to Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri. She clarified that the six per cent service tax, effective July 1, applies only to institutions charging annual tuition fees exceeding RM60,000 per student. 'The public need not worry, as it is understood that most private institutions currently do not charge fees that reach the RM60,000 threshold per year,' she told reporters after the Anjung Sinar 2025 Programme appreciation ceremony. Nancy urged operators to avoid exploiting the tax expansion to impose excessive fees. 'We hope they will act honestly to help parents so that they are able to work. Operators must also remember that people need their services, so do not charge excessively,' she added. The tax exemption extends to Malaysian citizens with disabilities. Meanwhile, Nancy presented awards to five Anjung Sinar Programme icons under Yayasan Kebajikan Negara (YKN), recognising their contributions in education, leadership, community, career, and volunteerism.

During a visit to the victim's family this morning, she offered her condolences and expressed hope that justice will be served. 'I pray the family will be given strength and resilience during this difficult time,' she said on Facebook, adding that the body was still en route from Serdang Hospital at the time of her visit. Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara was found dead in her dormitory room at the Mutiara Ville condominium in Cyberjaya on Tuesday morning (June 24). She had stayed behind for an exam while her five housemates left for the holidays on June 21. Several of her belongings, including a laptop, were missing. Videos circulating online showed police transporting the body to Serdang Hospital. A post-mortem revealed the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head. Sepang police chief ACP Norhizam Bahaman said there were no signs of forced entry or sexual assault. 'Based on the preliminary autopsy report, police deny allegations circulating on social media that the victim was raped and murdered,' he said. The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code. Police have urged the public not to spread unverified information and advised anyone with information to contact ASP Mohd Husny Hussien at 012-9307860 or the nearest police station. Conduct thorough, transparent probe into female student's murder, urges Nancy
PETALING JAYA: Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri has urged authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the death of a female university student found murdered at the hostel of a local university in Selangor. In a Facebook post, Nancy said she visited the victim's family before heading to Putrajaya and took time to speak with the grieving relatives and offered her condolences. 'I believe and hope that the investigation will be carried out with integrity and transparency so that justice can be upheld. 'The victim's remains have yet to arrive and are still on the way from Hospital Serdang,' she said in the post here on Thursday (June 26). Nancy also conveyed her deepest sympathies to the family, describing the loss as heartbreaking. 'I pray the family will be granted strength and resilience in facing this difficult time,' she said, adding that she hoped all affairs involving the family would be eased. It was previously reported that the victim, a Bachelor of Physiotherapy student, was found dead in a students' hostel. The victim, who was from Kuching, Sarawak, was discovered unconscious with visible injuries on her body by her friend at about 10am on Tuesday (June 24). The friend then immediately alerted the police. She was living with five other students who had returned home for the holidays on June 21, leaving her alone at the hostel as she was scheduled to sit for an upcoming examination. Several items belonging to the 20-year-old have been reported missing. Sepang OCPD Asst Comm Norhizam Bahaman said that the missing items include a laptop, mobile phone, ATM card, and cash. "We are conducting a thorough investigation and request space and cooperation from the public as we proceed further. We are currently recording witness statements and gathering additional evidence," he said. Efforts are underway to locate the suspect believed to be responsible for the murder, he added.
