Popular restaurant in North Wales village expands with new Airbnb

A couple who defied the odds and survived after opening their restaurant not long before Covid struck are expanding with an Airbnb rental. Talented chef Rob Dowell-Brown and his wife, Vicky, who run the Nant y Felin, in Llanrhaeadr YC, between Ruthin and Denbigh, were not eligible for financial support from the Government when the world went into lockdown. But the resourceful duo used the difficulty and weathered the storm by turning their hand to providing greatly appreciated take away meals for the community. Now Vicky has also taken on a two-bedroom apartment, Min y Maes, behind the property, effectively turning Nant y Felin into a restaurant with rooms. Rob, born in Elgin in North East Scotland, has a distinguished CV after working in AA Rosette restaurants in the West Country where he was brought up, the Home Counties, Scotland, the Scilly Isles. More locally, he has also tantalised taste buds at the Kinmel Manor in Abergele and the White Horse, Hendrerewydd, in the Vale of Clwyd. He has cooked for celebrities like John Cleese, Nigel Mansell, Frankie Howerd, Alan Titchmarsh and Maureen Lipman and as a trainee YTS chef was featured on GMTV's breakfast show in the 1990s. He said: 'John Cleese is from Weston Super Mare and Frankie Howerd also lived in Somerset when I was working there – Cleese would often do odd things like wear one sock. I had wanted to be a music teacher but didn't get the grades and when I left school at 16 I started to train as a chef on the Youth Training Scheme (YTS) getting £29.50 a week – my mum took £15. It was a harsh environment but it made me realistic about work – 29 of us started the YTS course and I was one of just three who finished it.' He met Vicky, from Ruthin, while working at the White Horse when she went along with her dad Bryn Dowell, there for an open mic folk music night and the couple – who both play guitar - now have a seven-year-old son, Billy. Things were particularly tough for them when the pandemic happened just over a year after they took over the Nant y Felin in 2018 and before they had the chance to build up the financial records needed to claim Government help. Rob said: 'We didn't really have any option other than to try and make a go of it by offering pizzas made in our proper pizza oven – the garden was overgrown and included three 40-foot leylandii spruce which provided fuel for the oven. We made sure all of our takeaway meals were served hot and to restaurant standard - allowing customers to enjoy a real treat at home when the UK was in lockdown" 'They proved very popular and on Father's Day we served 116 meals and at weekends it would be 70 a night and even in the week we were doing 30 or 40 a day and it's something we have continued ever since. 'We are always keen to try new ideas. We run our own open mic music nights on the third Wednesday of every month and I have been a forager for 20 years, finding edible plants and fungi and have done foraging walks. 'I did one in Denbigh for chef Chris Roberts, the Flamebaster chef on S4C and BBC Wales, and managed to find seven or eight ingredients to go with his open-fire cooking.' Nant y Felin fan Mario Kreft, from Denbigh, and his wife Gill, have a regular order for a takeaway Sunday lunch. He said: 'We discovered Rob's cooking during Covid when we were so busy but couldn't go anywhere and it was such a godsend to be able to enjoy his fantastic food at home on a Sunday after a difficult week. They literally stepped up to the plate, becoming honorary Covid warriors and providing an important community service. 'Rob and Vicky are a brilliant partnership. Their food is wonderful and we've also become regulars at the restaurant.' Vicky added: 'People found out about us in Covid and that got our names out there and that's something we've continued. So we are always looking at ways of increasing our offer so when our landlord, Huw Howatson, said that the two-bedroomed self-catering flat adjoining the restaurant was available Vicky decided to take the plunge and do it up. 'It's now on Airbnb and has hosted its first guest, someone from Canada who has relatives in the area, and we're hoping it will become a destination in its own right perhaps for people who want to go foraging. 'It's dog-friendly and so is the restaurant because it's all about being adaptable to people's needs to make the business more versatile.' Rob said: 'Since taking over at Nant y Felin, we have had to turn our hands to all sorts of things, from plumbing to joinery – I've made a lot of the furniture here and even our latest venture, turning an old fridge into a smoker. 'At the same time we're creating our own eco-system, putting food waste back into the garden whenever possible. 'We've also opened up the bar to customers who just want to come in and have a drink and we're employing 12 people here in the restaurant and most of us speak Welsh. 'Our menu changes virtually daily depending on what our suppliers have for us whether that's Vicky's uncle, Clwyd Dowell, at CLD Meats or the Vale Grocer, both in Denbigh, able to tell us exactly where their produce comes from or our fishmonger in Fleetwood . 'If they've got something special then we adapt the menu accordingly so we believe in using local produce even if we like to give it a twist. The idea is to go back to nature but using my skills as a fine dining chef to create something special.' That's true of Rob's signature dessert with tender young nettle leaves grown in the garden and harvested at the cost of a few stings before being transformed into a trio of nettle cheesecake, topped with a red nettle jelly and accompanied by deep pink nettle sorbet and garnished with ox-eye daisy and blue cornflowers. Vicky added: "The Nant y Felin really has become something very special to us. We are able to provide a service by cooking lovely produce for the local and wider community. 'We're a friendly place for people to just pop in and have a drink in the bar, it's a place where friends come to see us and most importantly, it's home for us, our son, Billy and our two lovely spaniels. 'Building all of this up over the last seven years is an achievement we're proud of and are looking forward to the future of the Nant y Felin."

David Beckham hospitalised as wife Victoria shares post-surgery recovery pic: ‘Get well soon daddy'

Former English footballer David Beckham is on the mend after undergoing surgery to correct a long-standing wrist injury—just weeks after being named in King Charles III's Birthday Honours list. The 50-year-old, now officially set to be knighted for his services to football and charity, was photographed in a hospital gown with his arm in a sling on Friday. Victoria Beckham shared David Beckham's photo after his surgery The image, shared by his wife Victoria Beckham on her Instagram Stories, showed the Inter Miami CF co-owner smiling from a hospital bed despite the fresh surgery. 'Get well soon daddy,' she wrote alongside a heart emoji. David Beckham suffered an injury during a friendly match against South Africa in 2003 According to report in People magazine, David's procedure was to finally address complications from a 2003 match injury, when he broke his wrist playing for England against South Africa. A dissolvable screw inserted during earlier treatment reportedly failed to dissolve properly over time, causing discomfort that worsened in recent months. Victoria later shared another photo, this time of David at home, holding a handmade beaded bracelet reading 'Get well soon'—a likely gift from one of their four children, adding a sweet family touch to the recovery. This brief hospital stay comes during an otherwise celebratory chapter in David's life. Earlier this month, it was officially announced that he would receive a knighthood, with the football icon set to become Sir David Beckham. The honour, long speculated, was met with overwhelming joy by David and his family. He reportedly took his mother Sandra out for lunch after the announcement, where she got emotional over the recognition. On the professional front, David continues to juggle his business empire, including the soaring popularity of his Major League Soccer club, Inter Miami. The team—boosted by the global spotlight surrounding Lionel Messi—is preparing for its new $1 billion stadium, Miami Freedom Park, expected to open in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite whispers of past family tensions—especially involving their son Brooklyn and daughter-in-law Nicola Peltz—the Beckhams appear united, with recent Father's Day posts including heartfelt tributes from all of their children.

Brooklyn Beckham 'snubs' David Beckham after hospital dash amid family feud

David Beckham has been suffering a family fallout with his eldest son Brooklyn Beckham for weeks after he chose to snub his 50th birthday celebrations lats month Brooklyn Beckham has delivered the ultimate public snub by failing to address his dad's injury online after his dad David Beckham was rushed to hospital. The former footballer, 50, is recovering in hospital with wife Victoria by his side and has since been discharged. His dash to get medical help comes amid the family fallout that has affected the Beckham family. David's eldest son Brooklyn, 26, has distanced himself from his parents and siblings after skipping all of the football icon's birthday celebrations last month. ‌ The rift continued as Brooklyn and wife Nicola stayed away from the parties despite being in the UK at the time. Brooklyn has since reportedly cut contact with his famous family and has publicly shown his support to his wife instead. ‌ In a series of blows, Brooklyn failed to celebrate David's long awaited knighthood or Father's Day. Earlier today, he promoted his sauce brand but at the time of writing, has yet to post about David's injury. Victoria has given fans an update. Victoria was the first to raise concern about David as she shared a snap of him lying in a hospital bed, with his arm in a sling. "Get well soon, Daddy," she wrote over the snap of him smiling while wearing a hospital gown. She also gave him a friendship bracelet made with white beads to form 'Get Well Soon'. The couple have yet to reveal what happened to the former England star. However, it has since been reported that David underwent secret surgery to repair a broken wrist that he sustained 22 years ago – during a friendly football match against South Africa in 2003. David recently revealed his long-running career left him with multiple injuries and years of "wear and tear". He said: "Certain parts of my body were a real mess." ‌ As Brooklyn chose to stay silent on his family in recent weeks, he has been keen to show the love for wife Nicola. In a recent post on social media, Brooklyn teased in the caption that she's his world. He wrote "my" alongside an emoji depicting the globe. Beside a heart emoji, he also commented over the photo: "My absolute angel." However, a few hours later, he returned to his page to share a message to David's mother Sandra. In the first reference to his own family in weeks, he marked his grandmother's birthday with a post that included a photo of him beside her. Brooklyn wrote: "Happy birthday nanny xx love you so much." ‌ David also shared a gushing post of his own to celebrate his mother's birthday, and made sure to give Brooklyn a nod. He captioned the tribute post: "Happy birthday mum we love you so much I hope u have the best day. "Thank you for always being there for us all Love you x @sandra_beckham49 @lynnebeckhambriggs1972 @jo_jo_beckham_ @victoriabeckham @brooklynpeltzbeckham @romeobeckham @cruzbeckham #HarperSeven." Despite snubbing his own dad and mum's birthdays this year on social media, Brooklyn made sure to wish Nicola's father, Nelson, a happy birthday in a sweet post shared on his Stories this week. "Happy birthday, Nelson, we love you," he wrote.

Pontypool dad nearly choked to death at Father's Day meal

Derek Parker, 66, had been enjoying a special meal with his family at the Harvester restaurant in Pontypool on Sunday, June 15. However, this joyous occasion took a turn for the worst when Derek started choking on a mouthful of his steak. Luckily for Derek the Pontypool community helped him and his family during this frighting ordeal. The Parker family out for a family meal (Left dad Derek Parker 66 with wife Susan Parker 67) (Right daughter Amy Parker 30 and brother Matthew Parker 31) (Image: Amy Parker) Speaking of the traumatic experience Derek said: 'I had the steak and on my second mouthful I couldn't get it back up. 'Our son (Matthew) did the Heimlich manoeuvre on me and managed to dislodge some of it. He has Autism, so he did very well but he was afraid he'd hurt me, but I was still choking.' Derek continued: 'Apparently this little boy ran up to his mother and said a man has fallen down and a woman came over. She was an off-duty nurse.' Thankfully for Derek and his family, the off-duty nurse was in the right place at the right time. (Image: NQ) Derek explained: 'She took over and I remember someone saying to me can you open your eyes, can you open your mouth. I couldn't do either. 'The next thing I remember was them lifting me into the ambulance and I had a quick scan in the Grange, and I was rushed up stairs for surgery.' Staff at the hospital thought the food had penetrated Derek's lungs. Rapidly responding to the incident, doctors performed an emergency surgery on Derek to help flush any food, vomit or blood out of his lungs. Derek has since fully recovered from the incident. She told the Argus her account of events. 'It's a horrible feeling on any day but especially on Father's Day. I thought my dad was dying in front of me. 'At one point I could see he was coughing. I kept saying are you okay? Do you need a drink? Then the drink came through his nose, and he started turning blue. I was panicking. 'I couldn't remember how to do the Heimlich manoeuvre so I shouted out can somebody help.' Amy continued: 'Everyone was so helpful, one woman named Amelia helped calm my brother outside, another man named Stephen offered to pay for our meal which Harvester gave us for free. 'Louise the nurse was brilliant, she talked to the 999 operator and was telling me different things and reassuring me.' The family are incredibly grateful for the support given to them through this terrible ordeal. Derek said: 'I want to thank all the people involved. Many people moved their tables for me because I was on the floor. I was lucky.' Amy added: 'I will forever be grateful for everyone's help and support that we received during this difficult time. 'From the moment he started choking, up until when he got discharged the following evening, we could not fault the care and support we received. 'I genuinely thought I'd lose my dad on that day, but I'm so thankful he's still here with us, and that's down to all the action and care we received during this difficult time.'

Justin Bieber's Inner Circle is ‘Deeply Concerned About His Behavior,' Says Source

It was supposed to be a happy occasion filled with gifts, homemade cards and a nice meal. Instead, Justin Bieber spent much of his first Father's Day as a dad flooding his Instagram with cryptic rants on his personal account. His initial post featured a close-up selfie with a middle finger graphic and a caption reading, 'I'm a dad that's not to be f**ked with.' He went on to share images of his wife, Hailey, holding their 10-month-old son, Jack, at a piano, then posted a heated text exchange between him and a former friend in which he cut the pal off, writing, 'this friendship is officially over. I will never accept a man calling my anger lashing out.' In between posts featuring a bong and what appeared to be a marijuana joint, he shared an emotional note that read: 'People keep telling me to heal. Don't you think if I could have fixed myself I would have already? I know I'm broken.' As the rants went on and on, fans continued to express concern in the comments section. But no one is more worried about the 31-year-old 'Peaches' singer than those closest to him, including his wife of nearly seven years. 'Everyone in Justin's world is deeply concerned about his behavior,' a source tells Star. 'It's as unpredictable and worrisome as it's ever been.' Indeed, Justin's flurry of unhinged Instagram messages comes on the heels of his June 12 altercation with paparazzi. In footage obtained by Page Six, the former child star engaged in a yelling match with photographers outside of Malibu hotspot Soho House. As Star previously reported, Hailey, 28 — whose recent $1 billion sale of her beauty brand Rhode has been overshadowed by Justin's behavior — wants him to get professional help, stat. 'It seems inevitable he'll need to seek help and do so fast,' says the source. 'The path he's currently on is toxic and totally untenable.' The Canadian singer began spiraling earlier this year. There was speculation he was on drugs following his February appearance at a Rhode event with Hailey, where he was seen swaying and smiling strangely. (His rep denied the reports to TMZ.) In a March Instagram post, he mused about his 'anger issues' and said, 'I hate myself sometimes when I feel myself start to become inauthentic.' The following month, Page Six reported on a video circulating on social media that showed him looking dazed and smoking what appeared to be marijuana while attending the Coachella music festival in Indio, Calif. Also in April, The Hollywood Reporter published a story about his involvement with the non-denominational Christian community Churchome, and TMZ reported his former best friend Ryan Good believes the star is in a cult. (In a since-deleted post shared on Instagram in April via People, Justin announced that he was no longer affiliated with his clothing brand Drew House, which he cofounded with Ryan.) The source says the pressure and isolation that come with fame have worn Justin down. 'He's been performing since he was a kid and used as a vehicle to make money for people in the industry, which has taken a mounting toll on him for years now,' says the source. Justin previously vented about his struggles in a 2019 Instagram post, revealing he suffered from severe depression and that he'd started doing 'pretty heavy drugs' at age 19, writing, 'I was hiding behind a shell of a person that I had become.' Hailey is overwhelmed. 'She's in the middle of this huge business deal and trying to take care of baby Jack,' says the source. 'All she wants right now is a calm and peaceful life.' It's been anything but since they tied the knot. In 2022, she even told Harper's Bazaar their marriage 'does take a lot of work.' Says the source: 'Hailey's strong, but she's finding it hard to keep making excuses for Justin.' It doesn't help that he's shutting everyone out. As Hailey encourages him to get help, she doesn't want to push him too far. 'The way he's turning on people who stand up to him has Hailey worried he'll do the same to her and walk away from their marriage,' says the source, noting that while Justin has checked in with his pastor and spiritual advisor Judah Smith, any words of wisdom are falling on deaf ears. 'Some of Justin's lifestyle choices — like smoking copious amounts of weed — are making it impossible for him to process advice clearly.' They're not giving up on him yet. 'It's a painful time, but Justin has a lot of people in his world who care about him deeply,' says the source, 'and they will be there no matter what.'
