Jeremy Fears Jr., Carson Cooper lead team to Moneyball Pro-Am championship
Add another trophy to the mantle for Jeremy Fears Jr. and Carson Cooper. Fears and Cooper capped off a strong showings in this year's Moneyball Pro-Am with a championship victory on Thursday evening. The two anticipated Spartans starters helped lead Tri-Star to the title over Faygo -- led by Jaxon Kohler and Divine Ugochukwu. Thursday night's semifinals and finals matchups were the last games of this year's event. This was the 20th annual Moneyball Pro-Am, which hopefully will be back again next summer as well. The Moneyball Pro-Am event is historically an opportunity for fans to get a look at the Spartans' offseason growth and itch the basketball scratch in the middle of summer. Cooper was a perfect example of watching offseason growth as he demonstrated an improved three-point shot during the event. Congratulations to Fears and Cooper on winning this year's Moneyball Pro-Am event. We will see if that strong play during the pro-am will continue onto the court this fall as Michigan State looks to defend their Big Ten title next season. MSU starting PG Jeremy Fears Jr. working with retired NBA star on shot this offseason
Spartans point guard Jeremy Fears Jr. has been working with a retired NBA star to improve his shot this offseason Michigan State basketball starting point guard Jeremy Fears Jr. understands what he needs to prioritize when it comes to improving his game this offseason -- his jump shot. Fears caught up with SpartanMag earlier this week and mentioned an area of improvement for him this offseason is his shot. He mentioned he spent time working out with his brother Jeremiah Fears during the pre-NBA Draft process and got to work with former NBA sharpshooter Mike Miller. "All around,I think, my game has improved and gotten better," Fears said. "Got smarter, got stronger, and the game has started to slow down for me." Fears started all 36 games he played in last season, serving as the Spartans floor general. He averaged 7.2 points and 5.4 assists in his first full season with the Spartans. Fears will be expected to score more next season for the Spartans while continuing to run the offense and generate assists. Check out the complete video clip of Fears talking with SpartanMag about his improved shooting in the video clip below: Contact/Follow us @The SpartansWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Michigan State news, notes and opinion. Jeremy Fears Jr. shares late night social media post on goal to reach Final Four
Jeremy Fears Jr. has made it clear what his goal is during his remaining time as a Spartan: hang another Final Four banner. Fears was putting in some late work at the Spartans' practice facility on Wednesday night, posting a picture on his Instagram story shortly after 11 p.m. ET. The picture posted was of the numerous Final Four banners hanging in the gym, with a caption stating "Tryan add one more." You can see the post from Fears below -- courtesy of Michigan State Content: Fears nearly helped lead Michigan State to the Final Four this past season, with the Spartans falling one game short in an Elite Eight loss to Auburn. The Spartans last reached the Final Four in 2019, but this past season's Elite Eight finish was the farthest they have gone since then. Michigan State will enter next season as a preseason top 25 team and certainly has the potential to contend for a Final Four appearance in 2026. I personally wouldn't say that is the preseason expectation or prediction from myself, but I love seeing Fears make it clear that's his goal. Hopefully, he is able to achieve this major feat before his college career is done. Michigan State basketball PG Jeremy Fears throws out first pitch at Chicago White Sox game
Michigan State basketball point guard Jeremy Fears Jr. signed a pretty cool NIL deal recently, becoming one of the Chicago White Sox, "CHISOX Athletes". The Chicago White Sox have brought back their NIL program, dubbed as CHISOX Athletes, and Fears was selected. Being in the program, athlete partners will receive branding opportunities across White Sox platforms, a professional photoshoot at a Chicagoland venue and custom gear. On Friday, Fears was able to throw out the first pitch for the White Sox game against the San Francisco Giants. A cool experience for the MSU point guard, returning to his home state. Dumars dealing early in his tenure as the Pelicans' new basketball operations chief
METAIRIE, La. (AP) — Joe Dumars is acting quickly to make his mark on the New Orleans Pelicans. A trio of trades within 10 days has kickstarted a roster overhaul, including the additions of veterans Jordan Poole and Saddiq Bey, along with a second lottery-level pick in the first round of the NBA draft. Dumars used the No. 7 overall pick he inherited to draft Oklahoma guard Jeremiah Fears. He used a recently acquired late first-round pick to trade up for Maryland forward Derik Queen at No. 13. 'When you're building out a team, whenever you have these tent-pole moments — draft, free agency, trade deadline — it's an opportunity for you to make a statement about who you are as a team,' Dumars said. 'We're really trying to define who we are.' It's been a decade since Dumars, who won NBA championships as both a player and executive with Detroit, stepped down from his perch in the Pistons' front office in 2014. This is the first time since then that he's run an NBA franchise's front office — this time in his home state of Louisiana as Pelicans executive vice president of basketball operations. In New Orleans, he decided his first move would be to keep coach Willie Green and injury-plagued franchise player Zion Williamson for now while making key changes to the supporting cast. First came a trade with Indiana last week that gave New Orleans a second first-rounder this year at No. 23 overall in exchange for a 2026 first-round pick. On Tuesday, Dumars sent guard CJ McCollum and center Kelly Olynyk to Washington for Poole and Bey. And during Wednesday night's first round of the NBA draft, Dumars used his recently acquired 23rd pick and another 2026 first-rounder the Pelicans had to move up and snag Queen. The Pelicans entered Thursday without a pick in the second round. An aggressive approach 'is the only way I've ever had success in this league,' Dumars said. 'I've been around aggressive teams my entire life in this league, in this business, as a professional. 'We are going to be aggressive in this front office,' he continued. 'We want our players to be aggressive. We want our approach to be aggressive. We want to show up.' In both Fears and Queen, Dumars said he targeted players who could 'impact winning,' regardless of their stat lines. The 6-foot-3 Fears — named to the SEC All-Freshman team last season — gives the Pelicans a point guard whose explosiveness with the ball and ability to create his own shot will 'compromise defense,' Dumars said. 'Just his ability to get anywhere on the court like that is a unique ability.' The price to acquire the 6-9 Queen, who also could play center and was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year, was steep. But Dumars said he'd thought through the risk-reward calculations and was going to make the deal he did as soon as he had a taker. 'When you have a chance to get two lottery picks in one draft, you're accounting for the following year,' Dumars said. 'When you identify a player that you think can be part of the foundation here, you go and get him. That's what we did.' ___ AP NBA:
