Mixed reports as Barcelona star considers Premier League return

Yahoo2 days ago
Barcelona star Ferran Torres could still opt for a bold return to the Premier League this season as he plots his next move.
The Spain international showed his worth in the 2024/25 campaign run-in as Hansi Flick's side sealed a trophy treble in his debut season.

A injury to Robert Lewandowski gave him a chance to stake a claim as leader of Barcelona's attack – flanked by Raphinha and Lamine Yamal – and he impressed in the Polish veteran's absence.
He ended the 2024/25 with a career-high 19 goals, bolstered by that period of covering for Lewandowski, but the latter remains undisputed as No.1 in Flick's plans.

Torres has previously stated his confidence at becoming the main man in Flick's attack but he knows that will take at least another year.

Lewandowski still has the option to extend his contract on into the 2026/27 season, and Torres faces a call on whether he is happy to wait, particularly with a World Cup on the horizon next summer.

Premier League side Aston Villa have been consistently viewed as a possible destination for Torres, despite doubts over his willingness to return to England, after struggling at Manchester City in his early career.
Reports from transfer specialists Fichajes.net claim Unai Emery does have money to spend, despite missing out on UEFA Champions League qualification.
However, that rumour is firmly rejected by Catalan outlet Mundo Deportivo, citing sources from both Barcelona and Villa, who claim the link is wide of the mark.
The chance of Villa making an offer still remains on the table but there has been no bid put forward by Emery.
Lewandowski's game time will be delicately managed next season, and that could be decisive for Torres, if Flick convinces him on his enduring place in the wider squad across a busy season.

Marquinhos calls on PSG to seize ‘golden opportunity' in Club World Cup final

Paris St Germain captain Marquinhos has urged his team-mates to seize their 'golden opportunity' to make history. The Champions League winners have a chance to complete a quintuple when they face Chelsea in the Club World Cup final in New York on Sunday. Advertisement As well as their European triumph – secured with a stunning 5-0 defeat of Inter Milan in May – the crack French outfit won three domestic trophies in 2024-25, including a league and cup double. Marquinhos has won four trophies this season, including the Champions League (Mike Egerton/PA) The Brazil defender said: 'We are very much aware of the importance of this match. It is a golden opportunity for us. 'This is a tournament that will be held every four years and we don't know if we will have another chance. We don't know what things will look like in four years. 'We want to grab this title to make it a perfect season which would be hard to replicate. We really want this title. We want to make history and are really hungry for a win.' Advertisement PSG will be strong favourites at the MetLife Stadium after powering into the final with a thumping 4-0 win over Real Madrid. Chelsea have defied pre-tournament expectations to reach the final and earn a shot at the title and a jackpot in excess of £90million. Marquinhos said: 'We have played good games but we should not fall into trap of talking about previous games. 'This final against Chelsea will have its own story. A lot will depend on what we do on the pitch. 'We have to see what Chelsea do and go about it the best way we can. As a final, regardless of previous results, it is 50-50 but we will play with aggression and an attacking mindset.'

PSG coach Luis Enrique warns against complacency in Club World Cup final

Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique on Friday urged his team to round off the best season in the club's history by winning the Club World Cup, but warned not to expect Sunday's final against Chelsea to be a "simple formality". "This is absolutely not going to be a simple formality," the Spanish coach insisted, refusing to accept that PSG are necessarily overwhelming favourites to lift the trophy at MetLife Stadium despite their fearsome form. Advertisement "I have analysed Chelsea. They have a great squad. Enzo Maresca is doing a great job and I really like what he is doing," Luis Enrique said. "They are a very complete team." PSG can complete a remarkable clean sweep of trophies with victory, having won a French league and cup double before claiming the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history at the end of May. "We want to finish this historic season in the best possible way," said the former Barcelona coach. "Now we must open the next chapter, win more major trophies. We want to make more history by winning on Sunday." Advertisement PSG were spellbinding at times in their 4-0 victory against Real Madrid in the semi-finals and also put four goals past Atletico Madrid and Lionel Messi's Inter Miami during the competition. "But we have to win this game to round things off. However, in a final there is always a winner and a loser, and that doesn't mean the loser has necessarily done anything wrong," Luis Enrique added. "We will lose again at some point, because that is what happens in top-level football, but I think the path is clear for everyone." This is the first edition of the 32-team Club World Cup, and whoever wins on Sunday will be world champions for four years, with the next tournament scheduled to take place in 2029. Advertisement "We are aware of the importance of this match, that it is a golden opportunity to be in a World Cup final," said captain Marquinhos. "This only happens every four years, and we don't know where we will be in four years." bap-raa/as/sco
