Sinar Harian continues to transform to stay competitive
The transformation encompasses the newspaper, social media, mobile application and website. Zamri (right) accompanies Firdaus in raising the Sinar Harian flag as a symbolic gesture for the Sinar Harian 19th Anniversary Celebration at Dataran Karangkraf on Saturday. SHAH ALAM – As it prepares to celebrate its 19th anniversary on July 31, mainstream newspaper Sinar Harian remains committed to transformation across all its platforms to stay competitive and keep pace with technological advancements. Sinar Karangkraf Group Editor-in-Chief Zamri Rambli said the transformation efforts span across its newspaper, social media, mobile application and website. 'Alhamdulillah, as of 2025, we've become one of the leading examples in the media industry, particularly with many of our programmes being at the forefront. We've always placed strong emphasis on transformation. 'In the past, our journalists only wrote for print, but now with technological developments, they receive various training, including conducting live broadcasts or video coverage on-site to adapt to the digital shift,' he said during the Sinar Harian 19th anniversary celebration at Dataran Karangkraf on Saturday. The lively celebration coincided with the 2025 Karangkraf Karnival Siang Malam, a three-day event that began on Friday. Commenting further, Zamri said the newspaper was launched 19 years ago at a time when print was still the public's primary reading choice, before facing the digital transition, yet Sinar Harian has managed to endure until today. He attributed this success to the company's early preparations in transitioning towards the digital era. At the same time, Zamri reaffirmed that Sinar Harian, known for its slogan 'Telus & Tulus', strives to remain an independent voice. 'We hope Malaysians will continue to support Sinar Harian as loyal readers. Being a newspaper free from political affiliation is not easy, but we're always committed to meeting that challenge,' he added. Earlier, Zamri accompanied Karangkraf Chairman Firdaus Hussamuddin in cutting 19 cakes as a symbolic gesture to mark the newspaper's anniversary. Firdaus (centre) leads the cake-cutting ceremony involving 19 cakes in conjunction with Sinar Harian's 19th Anniversary Celebration at Dataran Karangkraf on Saturday. Also present were Group CEO of Sinar Karangkraf, Farah Hussamuddin and Sinar Harian Executive Editor Azmi Tarmizi.

Warisan demands transparency on 1,200km aging pipes
Published on: Friday, July 11, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jul 11, 2025 By: Rahim Matnin Text Size: Firdaus stressed that the people of Sabah have been patient for far too long and said the government must now step forward to answer the key questions – how did the situation get to this point, and where did the people's money go? PUTATAN: Warisan Youth Deputy Chief and Deputy Head of the Warisan Putatan Division, Mohammad Firdaus Diun has voiced concern over a recent statement by the Sabah Works Minister regarding the existence of nearly 1,200 kilometres of aging water pipes throughout the state. He said the figure clearly shows that Sabah's water supply issue is not a new problem, but one that has persisted for decades. Firdaus questioned how such a large stretch of deteriorated pipes could be left without a planned replacement strategy, and whether the situation was a result of the major corruption scandal that previously hit the Sabah Water Department. He also raised doubts about the actual amount of funding that has been allocated and spent by both the state and federal governments following the scandal, and the extent of implementation of pipe replacement projects to date. Firdaus said that water issues can no longer be viewed solely as technical matters, but rather as concerns that involve accountability and transparency in governance. He said the people of Sabah are still suffering the effects of past scandals, including low water pressure, frequent disruptions, and scheduled rationing that continue to affect their daily lives. In response, Warisan has called on the government to take three immediate actions: to present a phased water pipe replacement plan with a clear schedule and regular progress updates; to publicly disclose a complete report on project status, including total funding, expenditures, and the identities of involved contractors; and to establish an independent audit committee to monitor project implementation and ensure transparency in the use of public funds. Firdaus stressed that the people of Sabah have been patient for far too long and said the government must now step forward to answer the key questions – how did the situation get to this point, and where did the people's money go? * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Police NSF jailed for misusing colleague's debit card, disclosing Singpass details
A full-time national serviceman stole his colleague's debit card details to buy concert tickets and also gave away his Singpass details, which were used to open a bank account that received scam proceeds. Muhammad Firdaus Mohd Asri, 22, was sentenced to 18 weeks' jail on July 4 after pleading guilty to illegally obtaining personal information, and disclosing information from his Singpass account to an unknown individual. On Jan 18, 2024, while at Clementi Police Division, Firdaus saw that his colleague, who was also an NSF, had left his wallet on his desk when he went to the toilet. Firdaus removed the victim's debit card from the wallet and took photos of the front and back of it. He then used the debit card details to purchase two tickets for an event at Drip Singapore, a nightclub at Concorde Shopping Mall. Firdaus' acts came to light when the victim noticed two unauthorised transactions of $32.52 each on his debit card and made a police report. Deputy Public Prosecutor Mavis Ng said Firdaus has since made restitution to the victim. Separately, in August 2023, Firdaus saw an advertisement posted on Telegram by an unknown individual promoting ways to earn money through investments. He contacted the individual, who asked him to deposit $10 to get $30 in a few days. When Firdaus said he had no money at the time, the individual offered $50 in exchange for his Singpass account details. Firdaus agreed and handed the details to the individual, who did not pay him and blocked him on Telegram instead. Using Firdaus' Singpass details, the individual created two bank accounts which saw over $110,000 flowing through them. Of that amount, a total of $17,500 in one account was traced to victims of rental scams, said DPP Ng. Seeking a jail term of between five and six months, DPP Ng said those who hand over control of their bank accounts or disclose their Singpass credentials are "a critical component that allows sophisticated organised criminal groups to commit scams". For this reason, the courts must thus take an uncompromising stance in meting out severe sentences for such offences. In mitigation, Firdaus, who was unrepresented, pleaded for leniency and said: "I regret what I have done, and I know I can be better than that. It was done out of greed." Referring to the jail term the prosecution sought, Firdaus said: "Is there any way to avoid getting into prison... as I have to support my family. In six months, anything can happen if I'm away from my family." Those convicted of disclosing their Singpass account details for wrongful gain can be jailed for up to three years, fined up to $10,000, or both. For illegally obtaining personal information, an offender can be jailed for up to three years, fined $10,000, or both.
