Sinar Harian continues to transform to stay competitive

SHAH ALAM – As it prepares to celebrate its 19th anniversary on July 31, mainstream newspaper Sinar Harian remains committed to transformation across all its platforms to stay competitive and keep pace with technological advancements.
Sinar Karangkraf Group Editor-in-Chief Zamri Rambli said the transformation efforts span across its newspaper, social media, mobile application and website.
'Alhamdulillah, as of 2025, we've become one of the leading examples in the media industry, particularly with many of our programmes being at the forefront. We've always placed strong emphasis on transformation.
'In the past, our journalists only wrote for print, but now with technological developments, they receive various training, including conducting live broadcasts or video coverage on-site to adapt to the digital shift,' he said during the Sinar Harian 19th anniversary celebration at Dataran Karangkraf on Saturday.
The lively celebration coincided with the 2025 Karangkraf Karnival Siang Malam, a three-day event that began on Friday.
Commenting further, Zamri said the newspaper was launched 19 years ago at a time when print was still the public's primary reading choice, before facing the digital transition, yet Sinar Harian has managed to endure until today.
He attributed this success to the company's early preparations in transitioning towards the digital era.
At the same time, Zamri reaffirmed that Sinar Harian, known for its slogan 'Telus & Tulus', strives to remain an independent voice.
'We hope Malaysians will continue to support Sinar Harian as loyal readers. Being a newspaper free from political affiliation is not easy, but we're always committed to meeting that challenge,' he added.

KUALA LUMPUR: Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah today graced the launch of the book, From Shariah to Statute: Legal and Regulatory Framework of Islamic Finance in Malaysia, which provides a comprehensive overview of Malaysia's unique dual legal system governing the Islamic finance sector. The book also explores recent regulatory developments, including licensing and supervision of digital Islamic banks and takaful operators, alongside Malaysia's ongoing efforts to promote sustainability, innovation, and legal harmonisation within the Islamic finance ecosystem. Meanwhile, during her lecture titled '1 Malaysian, 1 Takaful Dream: Too Far to Reach?', Nurdianawati highlighted the pressing need for comprehensive health protection amid rising medical inflation, which surged to 12.6 per cent in 2023, more than double the global average, hence putting significant strain on household expenditures. She noted that takaful penetration remains low at around 20 per cent, with over 90 per cent of Malaysians lacking adequate coverage, and more than 85 per cent of small and medium enterprises without suitable protection. At the same time, she said nearly 70 per cent of Malaysians still rely on overcrowded public hospitals, where waiting times can exceed 24 hours, while private healthcare costs continue to rise. In response, Nurdianawati proposed a comprehensive action plan aimed at achieving the national goal of '1 Malaysian, 1 Takaful' by 2026, not merely a vision but a shared social responsibility. 'Achieving '1 Malaysian, 1 Takaful' requires cross-sector collaboration involving government agencies, takaful operators, employers, zakat and waqf bodies, and civil society. This is no longer optional but a social obligation to prevent anyone from falling into poverty due to illness. 'This plan targets increasing takaful penetration to 40 per cent by 2028. Sapura Energy is now Vantris Energy Bhd
KUALA LUMPUR: Sapura Energy Bhd has changed its name to Vantris Energy Bhd, reflecting its cumulative effort in its corporate transformation. The name change, which takes effect today, follows shareholder approval at an extraordinary general meeting held on July 30. Shareholders also overwhelmingly approved the company's proposed regularisation plan, a crucial component of its financial and operational recovery. According to the company, the new name Vantris Energy reflects its renewed purpose and corporate identity. Group chief executive officer Muhammad Zamri Jusoh said the name was inspired by internal contributions, with over 200 submissions received from employees. "Vantris Energy was ultimately selected as the top choice," he said. The regularisation plan, which received approval from more than 99 per cent of shareholders, comprises four key components: capital reconstruction, debt restructuring, financing, and exemption from a mandatory general offer. As part of its debt restructuring efforts, the company's total borrowings will be cut from RM10.8 billion to around RM5.6 billion, leading to an estimated reduction of more than RM500 million in interest expenses. Malaysia Development Holding Sdn Bhd will subscribe to up to RM1.1 billion in redeemable convertible loan stocks as part of the company's fundraising initiative. The company said the funds raised will be used to settle outstanding payments owed to Malaysian oil and gas vendors, underscoring its continued commitment to supporting its ecosystem. "We are glad that shareholders have actively exercised their rights and played a decisive role in shaping the company's future. "With these approvals, Vantris Energy is now in a stronger position to move forward with renewed focus, financial strength and purpose," Zamri said.

Agrobank launches online account opening in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU (Aug 1): Agrobank has launched its online account opening service, marking a significant stride in its digital banking journey. The launch took place today at the Sabah International Convention Centre and was officiated by Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup. Arthur commended the move, saying it would greatly benefit rural communities who previously had to travel long distances to open bank accounts. 'This digital initiative improves accessibility and is expected to increase digital account openings by 10 to 15 percent, especially in previously unreachable areas,' he said. He added that the streamlined process, which takes just around ten minutes, would reduce the bank's operating costs by up to 30 percent. Agrobank Chief Executive Officer Dato Tengku Ahmad Badli Shah Raja Hussin said the digital system offers a faster, simpler and more user-friendly experience. Customers can now open a deposit account anytime, anywhere with just RM20, leveraging improved internet connectivity. 'This initiative also cuts down on paperwork and manual processing while expanding our reach beyond physical branches,' he said. 'It saves customers up to 75 percent of their time compared to traditional counter services, which usually take between 30 to 45 minutes.' Agrobank aims to register 1,500 new digital accounts within the next six months. The focus, he said, will be on underserved groups including youth, farmers and those with limited access to banking facilities. To address internet connectivity issues in remote areas, Agrobank has also introduced AgroTouch — a mobile account opening system using iPads connected via Starlink satellite technology. 'This mobile approach ensures inclusivity and personal service. Our staff will go directly to rural communities with the necessary equipment to assist customers in opening accounts,' said Tengku Ahmad. Customers can also access this service at Agrobank branches. The initiative supports Malaysia's broader digital transformation agenda by boosting financial inclusion, especially in the agriculture and food security sectors. Tengku Ahmad reaffirmed Agrobank's commitment to enhancing customer experience and operational efficiency for all Malaysians, particularly those in hard-to-reach areas. Agrobank has also officially launched the Takaful Kasih Plus Merdeka Edition Campaign, which will run from August 1 until September 30. Tengku Ahmad said in conjunction with Independence Month, they also launched the Takaful Kasih Plus Merdeka Edition Card, which features a special design with official Malaysian visual elements and is characterized by patriotic spirit. 'The specialty of this special edition card lies in the comprehensive coverage offered at a reasonable and affordable price. 'Customers will receive additional benefits such as for injuries due to grazing and ambulance charges, with a minimum takaful contribution of RM108 per year,' he said.
