JERTIH, June 27 (Bernama) -- Two more students from the Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) in Besut, Kuala Terengganu have been detained by police in connection with an ongoing bullying case at the school. Besut police chief Supt Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu said the two Form Three students were detained at 4 pm today after presenting themselves at the Besut district police headquarters with their families. "The arrest of the two brings the total number of detained students from the school to seven: six Form Three students and one Form Five student. "Today, five students have been remanded for three days while the two students who were just arrested this evening will be brought to the Kuala Terengganu Magistrate's Court tomorrow to obtain a remand order," he said in a statement today. He said the remand order was issued against all suspects to enable an investigation under Section 147 of the Penal Code (for rioting) to be carried out. In a related development, Azamuddin said yesterday evening his department received a report regarding another Form Two student who was also allegedly a victim in the same incident. "The victim claimed to have been bullied by the same group in the incident that occurred at 11.30 pm on Tuesday at the boarding school's hostel, resulting in pain in both right and left legs." Azamuddin said in a statement yesterday that a Form Two male student at Besut MRSM claimed he was bullied by several seniors in the hostel at 11.30 pm on Tuesday. He said that based on the report by the victim, he was ordered to crouch in a semi-squat position with slippers placed on his head for 40 minutes, punched in the stomach and slapped, causing the victim to experience pain in his stomach and right rib as well as bruises on the back of his body.

Deserving Has Nothing To Do With It: Why Negotiation Is The Real Superpower

By Damali Peterman 'You don't get what you deserve. You get what you negotiate.' That line from Apple TV's hit show Your Friends and Neighbors hits hard — because it's true. In a world where Black excellence is often overlooked, undervalued, or underpaid, waiting to be recognized isn't a strategy. It's a stall. I once worked with a brilliant Black woman who was up for a leadership role. She had the experience, the results, and the loyalty. But instead of making a clear ask, she said, 'They know I deserve it.' She was right, but guess what? They promoted someone else. I've also seen entrepreneurs spend months building a product or service, only to undersell it because they were afraid to ask for more. One client nearly gave away equity in her company just to 'keep the peace' — until she paused, reset, and negotiated a deal that respected both her vision and her value. The truth? Deserve is emotional. Negotiation is strategic. And strategy wins. Here's how to shift your mindset and use negotiation as your everyday superpower: Lead with Logic. Let Emotion Inform, Not Control. We often walk into negotiations carrying emotion — frustration, exhaustion, pride, fear. That's human. But feelings should inform your strategy, not derail it. Ask yourself: What do I feel? Why? And how can I translate that into what I want? For example: Anger might mean your value has been dismissed. Use that insight to frame a clear ask. 'Here's the impact I've made — and what I need moving forward.' Emotional intelligence isn't about shutting down how you feel. It's about leveraging it with discipline. Master the Foundational Five: Know Your Power Before You Speak Before you walk into any negotiation, you need to know five things. I call them the Foundational Five — they're essential to every successful negotiation: 1. Know what you want 2. Know what you need 3. Know how to actively listen 4. Know how to communicate 5. Know when to close These five elements keep your approach grounded and focused. If you don't know what you want, how can you ask for it? If you don't know how to listen, how can you discover what matters to the other side? And if you don't know when to close, you risk losing the deal you already earned. You don't have to be the loudest or the most experienced. You just have to be prepared. The Foundational Five will get you there. Practice in Small Places So You're Ready for Big Ones Negotiation is not a once-a-year event. It's a daily habit. You negotiate when you ask your child to take a break from the screens. When you say 'I need 10 minutes' before jumping into another conference call. When you ask for support instead of silently carrying the load. These small moments build muscle memory. So when it's time to ask for a raise, pitch your business, or push back on bias — you've already trained for it. Final Word: Your Power Is in the Ask Negotiation is not manipulation. It's alignment. It's advocacy. It's how you close the gap between where you are and where you want to be. So let go of waiting for what's fair. Let go of hoping someone sees your value. Let go of 'deserve.' And remember this instead: You get what you ask for. You get what you prepare for. You get what you negotiate. RELATED CONTENT: Awkward To Authentic: Conference Networking Tips for Introverts

Youth Day, June 16: Comparing 1976 to 2025

Police watch as pupils demonstrate in Soweto during the 1976 uprising. Image: IOL archives By Adv Mahlodi S. Muofhe Let me detour for a moment from the collective amnesia of many South Africans who believe stoically that the Soweto Secondary and High School students on that fateful 16 Wednesday June 1976 day when we took to the streets of Soweto in the cold morning to march in protest, we were marching to demand jobs or job opportunities from the white apartheid economy which thrived in its business endeavours because the protectionist apartheid labour laws enabled it to do so. Far from it. We were in our teens when we took the revolutionary steps to march in protest against the then Bantu Education system which was hellbent on domesticating us, as black students. The apartheid government in all its forms of diabolical anti-transformative education polices had already succeeded in deploying our parents to "kitchen girls and garden boys" at their places of work by feeding them the rotten education syllabus. The apartheid government contemporaneously commenced with their policy which implored that all black students in schools in South Africa from Form One to Form Three (JC) then, would have to study their content subjects implying that mathematics, physical science, geography, biology and history would have had to be taught in Afrikaans, the language we detested as that of our apartheid oppressors language which we neither understood nor comprehended. We who were, at the time in 1976 in Form Four and Form Five, were exempted from learning these content subjects in Afrikaans. The (apartheid government's) sole purpose of imposing Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in black schools wasn't to educate us for the future so that upon completion of our tertiary or vocational educational studies, we could also be creators of jobs and job opportunities, it was meant to condemn to the world of perpetual job seekers as we would have dropped out from school without having grossed Form Five (Matric). During that period in 1976, we barely had dreams about entering the job market. We had genuine ambitions to complete our primary to high school education system so that we could either go to various universities or technical colleges to acquire more professional knowledge in preparation for us to fully participate in building our democratic South African economy post the attainment of our new democratic South Africa which we knew would dawn in our lifetime since in underground structures of our then banned liberation movements like the ANC and PAC, some of us were already moles thereof. That our economy is misfiring and not performing optimally is as a consequence of inter alia our neglect back then as South African of some of the 1976 cohort of students who fell through the cracks post June 16, and found themselves drowned by the apartheid economy which remunerated them poorly such that when they became family persons, others couldn't afford to educate their children all the way to universities and technical colleges as a result, their children became hasslers and that process replicated itself so much that out of 20 countries globally with the highest unemployment rate of youth, we (South Africa) came at number four with 49.14% ( We didn't preach the importance of going to school then vigorously. We are continuing in the same trajectory today in the name of the youth of Soweto June 16, 1976 where we want the youth of today to think that they must go out there and look for jobs and job opportunities which are not there. We fought for quality education in 1976. Critical essential education to match the needs of our economy is what we should embark on vigorously. Our youth that is those who succeed to summit university qualifications and technical qualifications, often study qualifications which are not fit for purpose the outcome of which keeps on increasing the pool of the high number of unemployed youth in South Africa. It now not an anomaly to see students who have just qualified as medical doctors, lawyers and accountants queuing at various robots in the City of Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town carrying placards indicating that they have completed their degrees and yet they cannot find employment. This is a crisis which requires that South Africans must put their heads together with the leadership of our institutions of higher learning and try to cure the problem of mismatch of our education system with what our economy needs. * Adv Mahlodi S. Muofhe, admitted advocate of the High Court of South Africa. ** The views expressed do not necessarily reflect the views of IOL or Independent Media.

Mathew Rubico returns home to LPU after two years in La Salle

NCAA By BEA MICALLER,GMA Integrated News Matthew Rubico is making a homecoming in Intramuros as he returns to Lyceum of the Philippines University. The former NCAA high school standout confirmed that he is leaving De La Salle University in the UAAP after a two-year stay with the Green Archers to rejoin the LPU Pirates in their bid to win an elusive title. For Rubico, coming back to where it all started for him was a no-brainer as he is confident he can bring out his full potential under the guidance of LPU head coach Gilbert Malabanan. "Kaya po napili ko bumalik sa LPU kasi nararamdaman ko po na du'n ko po mas maipapakita 'yung talent na natutunan ko sa ilang taong pag-eensayo," Rubico told GMA News Online on Monday. "Sa tulong po ng mga coaches and mga magiging ka-teammates ko po, feel ko po na matutulungan po nila ako ilabas 'yung full potential ko." Rubico was a scoring machine in the juniors ranks, once erupting for a 43-point explosion back in Season 98 with the LPU Junior Pirates. His offensive onslaught earned him an inclusion in that edition's Mythical Five alongside Luis Pablo, Seven Gagate, Chris Hubilla, Amiel Acido, and Andy Gemao. He then decided to bring his act to the UAAP after joining La Salle. He sat out Season 86, where the Green Archers captured the crown against University of the Philippines. He was lined up in the recent Season 87, but the Taft crew faltered in their title defense after bowing to the Fighting Maroons in the finals. The young guard, though, feels his future is in LPU. He is now linked up with the Pirates anew as he looks to lead the rebirth of LPU after missing out on the Final Four last year. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
