Boston Fleet announce Kris Sparre as head coach

(Photo credit: Dan Hamilton-Imagn Images) Kris Sparre is the new head coach of the Boston Fleet of the Professional Women's Hockey League. He is the second coach in the club's young history. He replaces Courtney Kessel, who was hired in June to coach the Princeton women's hockey team. In the Fleet's first two seasons, they were 27-19-8 under Kessel, including a run to the league's Walker Cup finals in their debut campaign. For the past three seasons, Sparre, 38, was an assistant coach with the San Diego Gulls of the American Hockey League, the Anaheim Ducks' top affiliate. 'I'm honored and thrilled to be named the head coach of the Boston Fleet,' Sparre said in a team-released statement. 'This is an incredible opportunity to be part of a league that has experienced remarkable growth and momentum in recent seasons. Boston stands as one of the premier sports cities in the world, and I look forward to building a program that is capable of contending for a championship every season.' Sparre, an Ontario native, also has coaching experience in the Ontario Hockey League and in Austria's top professional league. 'What makes Kris such a strong fit is his experience in the AHL, where coaches are constantly balancing the need to win now with the responsibility of developing players -- a challenge that mirrors what we face in the PWHL,' Fleet general manager Danielle Marmer said. 'Our players need to grow and perform in real time, and Kris understands how to create that environment. He brings clarity, structure and a deep commitment to helping players succeed. 'Just as importantly, he's known as a relationship-driven coach and an elite communicator -- someone who builds trust, connects with players, and brings energy and purpose to the rink every day. We're thrilled to have him leading our team.' Sparre played professionally for nine total seasons in the ECHL and Germany's Deutsche Eishockey Liga. The schedule has not yet been announced for the 2025-26 season.

Aerin Frankel's workload may not be sustainable. That could be good news for some of the Fleet's new additions.

Related : Across the league, teams will have to create contingency plans as their top players will represent their countries at the Rivalry Series in November and December, the Milan Olympics in February, and the Women's World Championship in April. Advertisement With the added games comes more potential for injuries and fatigue. 'There's going to be a lot of extra games played this year … and the goal on the end of the Fleet is we need [Frankel] to be rocking come May,' Mosca said. 'We want her to play as many games as she can, but … obviously we need someone to step up and take a little bit of that load away.' Frankel missed two games late in the 2024-25 season after suffering an upper-body injury in the gold medal game of the World Championship. She returned for the final game of the regular season, a win-or-go-home contest against Minnesota to decide who would snag the final playoff spot, and allowed an uncharacteristic three goals on 10 shots in the first period before being pulled. Advertisement A collision with Team Canada's Laura Stacey left Aerin Frankel injured at a crucial time in the PWHL season. Petr David Josek/Associated Press Frankel's injury last season points to the potential need for load management, and the departure of two Fleet goalies from last season could present an opportunity for a new crop of netminders. Emma Söderberg, who played 14 games for the Fleet over two seasons, and Klara Peslarova, who played four games in her lone PWHL season last year, signed this offseason to play in the Swedish professional league, leaving two roster spots open. The Fleet signed former Boston College goalie Abbey Levy to a one-year contract in free agency and selected Amanda Thiele, a fifth-year player out of Ohio State, in the sixth round of the PWHL Draft. Related : The Fleet also extended a training camp invite to goalie Kaitlyn Ross, who played five years at Canada's Mount Royal University and has also been a catcher catcher on the Canadian national women's baseball team since 2017. Losing Söderberg and Peslarova, who had professional and international experience prior to the Fleet, means Boston's goalie group has gotten significantly younger, but Mosca isn't concerned. Thiele finished her stint at Ohio State as the winningest goaltender in program history with 73 victories, backstopping the Buckeyes to the 2022 NCAA title and leading them back to the national championship game in 2025. Levy is coming off her second pro season with the New York Sirens after a five-year college career split between Minnesota State and BC, where she achieved a career-best .947 save percentage in 2022-23, ranking second in Division 1 and setting a single-season program record. Advertisement 'No matter what, we have someone in that net that's played important games before,' Mosca said. With Frankel and Levy signed, the competition for the third and final goalie spot will be stiff, and Mosca anticipates his Nos. 2 and 3 will continue to battle all season for playing time. 'You look at some of these goalies [in the PWHL], and they're the best in the world, so it's definitely a tough position to crack,' said Ross, who racked up a career .945 save percentage in USports, Canada's version of the NCAA. '[The Fleet] opened up some opportunities for me to showcase myself and get myself out there and maybe crack a roster.' And while Frankel will maintain her starting role, she expects Levy — her former high school teammate at Shattuck St. Mary's and onetime college rival in Hockey East — will push her in practice. 'There's always going to be competitiveness in the PWHL, and that's what makes it so special, just the depth of talent that we have,' Frankel said. 'That's why we have the fan support that we do. That's why we have the competitive games that we do.' Emma Healy can be reached at

Kourtney Kardashian helped me poop — I was skeptical but following her worked liked a charm

New York Post may be compensated and/or receive an affiliate commission if you click or buy through our links. Featured pricing is subject to change. My bowels and I have been on a journey. There are few things more humbling than standing in line at Duane Reade with a Fleet enema in your hand, (at the location with the 'out-of-order' self-checkout of course) because you just want to poop like a human. So when I say I've been there, trust me, I've been there. 5 Kourtney Kardashian has the secret to making you poop if you've been feeling constipated. kourtneykardash/Instagram I started taking a moderate weight management medication called metformin that, while helpful, has the unfortunate side effect of slowing things down in the gut department if I'm not adequately hydrated. So, given I live a perpetually dehydrated life, I was feeling a little… stuck. Even with a decent diet and my trusty fiber bars, I was still feeling thick. It was serendipity that Lemme No. 2, Kourtney Kardashian Barker's gut-friendly go-poo-poo gummies, landed on my desk. Literally, our Wellness Editor stopped by as if she could see the discomfort in my face and asked me if I was open to trying these Kardashian poop gummies (or rather, Kardashian brand gummies that help you poop) as long as I was willing to write about them. 'Trying and writing about products is what I do, girl,' I said as the New York Post Commerce Director. 'Bring 'em on.' This wouldn't be the first time I've gotten down and dirty about gut and butt health online before, but that's a story for a another day (and for another job). 5 Kourtney added the No. 2 gummies to her Lemme lineup earlier this year. Travis Barker/Instagram What is Lemme No. 2? Part of Kardashian Barker's Lemme line, Lemme No. 2 is a vegan gummy supplement designed to support digestion and regularity. At a glance, it's a delicious gummy that helps you go. But under the hood, Lemme No. 2 isn't your mom's Costco fiber chewable. It packs a pretty impressive combo of ingredients designed to support digestion, regularity, and overall gut health. Amazon Support regular digestion with these vegan, strawberry-flavored gummies packed with fiber, magnesium citrate, and science-backed probiotics (Bacillus subtilis and coagulans). Made with plant-based agar agar instead of gelatin, they're formulated to help things move naturally without the harsh crash of typical laxatives. Your gut (and your toilet) will thank you. Pros: Tastes like a treat, works like a charm Gentle and effective (no scary surprises) Nice packaging you can leave out Vegan, non-GMO, clean ingredients Cons: Pricey Not a miracle fix Each serving includes: 4 grams of prebiotic fiber (from chicory root) to help feed the good bacteria in your gut and keep things moving smoothly. Fun fact: about 95% of Americans aren't getting enough fiber, so this one's pulling serious weight. (from chicory root) to help feed the good bacteria in your gut and keep things moving smoothly. Vitamin D, because apparently your gut and immune system are besties and D helps them stay on speaking terms. And if you're vegan or just grossed out by animal byproducts in your vitamins (same), here's the good news: these gummies use agar agar, a seaweed-derived thickener instead of gelatin. That's the magic that gives them their chew without borrowing anything from bones. It's a pretty clean formula designed to get things moving without wrecking your routine. 5 New York Post Commerce Director Barret Wertz says Kourtney's fiber gummies worked like a charm. Brian Zak/NY Post 5 Bonus: The purple bottle looked beautiful on his desk at work. Barret Wertz Performance: Did Lemme get me going? Shockingly, yes. I started with the recommended two gummies per day and noticed relief after about three days. Nothing dramatic, no mad dash to the bathroom or sudden urges mid-meeting, but my body just… started cooperating. My bloating eased up, my mood lifted, and my pants fit like they forgave me. From there, I kept the bottle at my desk and took them every other day or so, mainly when I knew I hadn't had enough water or veggies to do the job naturally. My gut and my butt stayed grateful. 5 Kourtney's gummies have 4 grams of prebiotic fiber, plus probiotics and vitamin D. Lemme Final verdict I'm not one to buy something just because a Kardashian made it (quite the opposite, actually), but if they make a product that keeps me regular, I'll absolutely keep it in my drawer. Lemme No. 2 isn't a cure-all, but it is an effective, non-intimidating way to keep things moving, especially when your lifestyle (or medication) is putting the brakes on your bowels. I'll be honest: I rolled my eyes when I first saw it. But three days later, I unclenched, literally and emotionally. Would I try other products from the line? I'm already reading ingredient lists… How I Tested Timeframe: 2+ months 2+ months Dosage: two gummies daily at first, then two every other day two gummies daily at first, then two every other day Environment: mostly at work mostly at work Comparison: previously used fiber supplements and flirted with the idea of a fleet enema (did not follow through — thankfully)

Fleet roster reset: Where Boston's roster stands after shakeup from free agency and the PWHL Draft

Teams then had an opportunity to rebuild their rosters through free agency and The free agent signing period opened June 16 and is ongoing. Signing will pause Friday at 2 p.m. and resume July 8 at 9 a.m. Advertisement Here's a look at the Fleet's departures and acquisitions during the tumultuous expansion period, plus projected lineups heading into next season: The departures The loss of Knight to Seattle was the shot heard 'round the league, but the Fleet quietly lost a few other stars. Five defenders from the 2024-25 roster — Sydney Bard (Vancouver), Emily Brown (Seattle), Emma Greco (Vancouver), Jess DiGirolamo (Montreal), and Sidney Morin (Minnesota) — are headed elsewhere. The expansion teams poached Bard and Brown during the exclusive signing period, while Greco, DiGirolamo, and Morin were on expiring contracts and signed in free agency. Advertisement Forward Hannah Bilka signed with Seattle after a standout rookie year in which she netted five goals and added six assists in 16 games. She'll be joined in Seattle by forward Lexie Adzija, who spent the past season and a half with Boston as a physical two-way player. It's also worth noting that the Fleet are on the hunt for a new coach. The Fleet will be without Hilary Knight (left) Emily Brown (bottom right), and Jess DiGirolamo (top right) next season. Ken McGagh for The Boston Globe The acquisitions The Fleet recouped their losses by signing six players thus far in free agency: three forwards, two defenders, and a goalie. Boston announced its first two signings, forwards Chloe Aurard and Liz Schepers, on June 18. Aurard, who inked a one-year deal with the Fleet, spent the past two seasons with New York and will reunite in Boston with Müller, her former Northeastern linemate. Aurard had two goals and two assists in 27 games with the last-place Sirens last season. Schepers, who scored the winner for Minnesota in Game 5 of the past two Walter Cup Finals, signed a two-year deal in Boston. Schepers had two goals and four assists in 27 games last season. Rounding out the forward group is Laura Kluge, who signed a one-year deal June 20. Kluge joined Toronto on a training camp invite in 2024 but didn't sign a contract with the Sceptres until February. The Fleet also added defenders Rylind MacKinnon (Toronto) and Zoe Boyd (Ottawa), and goaltender Abbey Levy (New York), all on one-year contracts. At the end of her three-year stint at Boston College, Levy held the program records for save percentage (.940) and saves per game (31.96). Advertisement Boston also made six selections in the PWHL draft, Related : Other draft picks include forwards Ella Huber (Minnesota), Olivia Mobley (Minnesota Duluth), and Abby Newhook (Boston College); defender Riley Brengman (Ohio State); and goaltender Amanda Thiele (Ohio State). The Fleet selected defender Haley Winn in the first round of the PWHL draft. Tony Avelar/Associated Press The players sticking around Free agents Susanna Tapani, Theresa Schafzahl, and Jill Saulnier — all forwards who were on expiring contracts — signed one-year extensions to stay with the Fleet. The question marks Six players from last season's roster remain unsigned: Emma Söderberg, Klara Peslarova, Loren Gabel, Amanda Pelkey, Jillian Dempsey, and Kelly Babstock. Söderberg and Peslarova, both goaltenders, will not return to the PWHL this season and intend to sign with teams in the Swedish league, a team source told the Globe. Dempsey and Babstock spent most of last season on reserve contracts and made nine appearances each in game action. Gabel appeared in 20 games (2 goals, 1 assist), while Pelkey had 5 points (3 goals, 2 assist) in 25 appearances. Russia conducts cruise missile drills in Sea of Japan, hits simulated targets

Russian warships and coastal missile systems struck simulated maritime targets with cruise missiles during exercises in the Sea of Japan, TASS state news agency reported on Monday, citing Russia's defence ministry. The ships and missile systems, all part of Russia's Pacific Fleet forces, "carried out a joint missile strike against a complex target setup in the Sea of Japan, simulating enemy ships", TASS cited the ministry's statement as saying. "All targets were successfully hit." The Fleet's flagship, the Varyag Guards missile cruiser, carried out a live launch of a Vulkan anti-ship cruise missile, and two missile boat strike groups attacked targets with four Moskit cruise missiles, TASS reported. The combat crew of the Bastion coastal missile system launched an Onyx anti-ship missile, it said. The missile firing zone had been closed in advance to civilian shipping and air traffic, the agency reported.
