McLaren Pioneers 3D-Printed Suspension for Ultimate Durability & Aero

McLaren has partnered with California-based industrial digital manufacturing company Divergent Technologies to develop a series of 3D-printed suspension components for its upcoming W1 supercar. The new McLaren W1 features a Formula 1-inspired front suspension mounted directly into the vehicle's Aerocell monocoque and a central chassis made from carbon fiber. Divergent's 3D printing technology has helped McLaren develop efficient and intricate suspension systems, optimizing durability and stiffness. These suspension systems include the front upper wishbone, aeroform lower wishbone, and front upright, with externally visible front wishbones playing a key role in managing airflow and enhancing suspension strength. "The Divergent Adaptive Production System, or DAPS as we call it, is a fully digital design agnostic production system that allows the user to optimize any design for any vehicle without any changeover in tooling or design-specific fixturing," said Cooper Keller, Divergent's Chief Programs and Operational Officer. Will Tabbah, Principal Chassis Engineer at McLaren, described the W1 as "all about aerodynamics" when discussing the car's Formula 1-derived approach. McLaren needed Divergent to integrate its Formula 1-inspired suspension system into its carbon fiber monocoque cell. Divergent's laser powder bed fusion 3D printing process begins with powdered metals, high-powered lasers, and precision optics, which weld the powder layer by layer into complex structures. Automakers have traditionally used 3D printing for prototypes or aesthetic components, but Divergent uses 3D printing with artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and robotics for production-ready structures. Keller noted that Divergent's lower wishbone for the W1 was the first time it integrated an aero profile into the structure, while emphasizing lightness. Removing a single gram was likely to compromise the entire part's performance or integrity. Divergent formed these components with its computer algorithm after receiving McLaren's requirements, which included a design space, keep-out zones, the part's stiffness, and load cases it had to sustain. McLaren underwent multiple iterations of component development, which was easily adapted to by Divergent, thanks to its software handling the heavy lifting. Keller said he wants Divergent's partnership with McLaren to extend beyond suspension components, covering cars from bumper to bumper and corner to corner. The McLaren W1 was introduced to commemorate the automaker's 50th anniversary of its first Formula 1 championship win. It features a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine paired with a hybrid system, producing 1,257 horsepower and boasting a top speed of 217 mph. McLaren will debut the $2.1 million W1 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which is occurring this weekend. The automaker is limiting its W1 production to 399 models, with each unit already sold. With help from Divergent, the McLaren W1's front upper wishbone, aeroform lower wishbone, and front upright strike an ideal balance between weight, strength, durability, and aerodynamics. The adaptability of Divergent's software helped facilitate McLaren's ability to create a car that's Formula 1 for the road while pushing the industry toward newer manufacturing techniques. More automakers may soon follow McLaren and Divergent's lead in streamlining production with 3D-printed parts, which offer greater flexibility through rapid testing and refinement. Why Simone Ashley's Role Was Cut in the 'F1' Movie

THE RUNDOWN Simone Ashley's role in the upcoming film F1 was unfortunately cut down significantly from the final version. In a new interview with People, the film's director, Joseph Kosinski, explained why. 'It happens on every film, where you have to shoot more than you can use,' he said. 'There were two or three storylines that ultimately didn't make into the final cut.' (According to People, Ashley appears onscreen, but doesn't have any speaking lines.) Kosinski added, 'But Simone, she's an incredible talent, incredible actress, incredible singer, and I would love to work with her again.' The Formula 1-inspired movie, set to release in theaters on June 27, stars Brad Pitt and Damson Idris. The cast also includes Javier Bardem, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, Sarah Niles, and Kim Bodnia. (F1 superstar Lewis Hamilton also makes an appearance and produced the movie.) Ashley's role was first announced in July 2024 after fans spotted her and Idris at the British Grand Prix in England, where the movie was being filmed. Details about her role, though, were kept under wraps. Earlier this month, the Bridgerton star spoke to ELLE about what it was like to film F1. 'That was crazy,' she said. 'I have a very small part, but I'm grateful to be in that movie. I got to experience many Grands Prix. I don't think I'll ever do anything like that again.' And back in March, she revealed more about the process. 'I mean, this film, gosh, has been going for years,' she told Who What Wear, also noting that 2023's SAG-AFTRA strike delayed filming. 'I met for this movie, I think, before Bridgerton even came out.' She continued, 'Obviously, with the strikes and delays, we finally wrapped in Abu Dhabi in December. It's been a long time, and you know, it's Damson and Brad's movie. I'm just so grateful that I can be part of it.'

PVH is ‘focused on what we can control' in uncertain consumer environment

PVH Corp. saw its revenue increase 2% to $1.98 billion in the first quarter of fiscal 2025, according to a press release Wednesday. The increase exceeded the company's previous guidance of flat to down 2% for the quarter. Tommy Hilfiger revenue increased 3% year over year, driven by growth in the Americas as well as the region including Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Calvin Klein revenue was flat for the period. Overall DTC revenue fell 3% year over year, with growth in EMEA offset by declines in both the Americas and in Asia Pacific. Wholesale revenue increased 6%. 2025 is an important year in PVH's previously announced multi-year PVH+ Plan, which looks to boost the value and desirability of the Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger brands. The strategic plan is also designed to bring the company to $12.5 billion in revenue by the end of this year. Thus, growing revenue is a big commitment for the company in 2025, said CFO Zac Coughlin on an earnings call with investors Thursday. However, changing tariff policies and tempered consumer spending have made this a challenging time for the fashion industry. 'While we are making important progress in our PVH+ Plan execution, we are navigating an increasingly uncertain consumer and macroeconomic backdrop — and given where we are on our brand-building journey, we're not yet fully able to offset that impact,' PVH CEO Stefan Larsson said in the press release. 'Looking ahead, we're focused on what we can control, stepping up our actions to scale the impact of our stronger product, next-level cut-through campaigns, and sharper marketplace execution across both brands.' Next quarter, PVH expects revenue to increase in the low single-digits compared to the same period last year. PVH reaffirmed its fiscal 2025 outlook, and forecast revenue to be flat or slightly up year over year. However, it changed its earnings per share guidance for the year to a range of $10.75 to $11, down from its previous guidance of $12.40 to $12.75. On the earnings call, Larsson said that despite the negative consumer and macroeconomic environment, the company is still able to retain customers by tapping into product innovation, distinctive marketing and strong wholesale. He pointed to the recent product innovation in Calvin Klein's men's underwear, including a viral ad campaign with musician Bad Bunny, as well as Tommy Hilfiger's partnership with Cadillac for a Formula 1-inspired collection. PVH said it identified $65 million in unmitigated tariff effects for the rest of the year, though it believes it has an advantage with a globally diversified revenue base and supply base. The company has a larger international share of its business than some of its competitors, with 30% of its business in the U.S. and 70% international, per Larsson. PVH is working with its supply chain partners to share the impact of the tariffs if possible, but noted that it's ready to take 'calibrated and targeted pricing action' in business lines where it has pricing power, Coughlin said on the call. 'We remain laser focused on perceived value for our consumers, so we will evaluate to take discount reductions to mitigate potential tariff impact,' he said.
