In return, France Galop representatives will visit Meydan Racecourse for the running of the Group 3 Dubawi Stakes on January 2, 2026. Cheltenham Festival-winning trainer gets three-month 'non-sporting offences' ban

French trainer David Cottin has had his racing licence suspended for three months after being found guilty of "non-sporting offences." The punishment was handed down after the French ministry of the interior submitted a request on behalf of the police on April 30. France Galop, the governing body for flat and steeplehorse racing in France, confirmed its verdict this week following an investigation. And it means former Cheltenham Festival-winner Cottin will be prevented from entering any runners into competition until September 24. The ex-jockey was previously banned for 12 months, six of which were suspended for good behaviour, after horses under his command failed drug tests. He returned to competition at the end of 2023 but has fallen afoul of the authorities once more. Specific details regarding this latest suspension are yet to be disclosed. Paris Turf reported Cottin has been denied the right to appeal the verdict. Cottin and his team successfully argued to have proceedings delayed after the request was first submitted. An adversarial hearing, which allows each party to question one another's evidence, then took place on June 19. France Galop granted the police request five days later. It's understood Cottin currently has 59 horses in training, each of whom will now be ineligible to race until September as long as they remain part of his stable. In addition to seeing his training licence suspended, Cottin's rights as an owner and breeder have also been revoked for the three months. The son of famed French trainer Philippe Cottin now faces an uncertain future in the sport, at least in the short term. The Racing Post reported Cottin's only hope for an appeal would have to go through the courts and is different from a normal disciplinary ban. This supports the assertion that his offence is non-sports related. The Chantilly trainer celebrated one of the biggest results of his career when Easysland clinched victory in the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase in 2020. That win interrupted Tiger Roll's run of success in the race and prevented the Gordon Elliott-trained icon from winning it four years in a row. Twelve months later, Tiger Roll got his revenge by pipping Easysland to the title once again. However, Cottin has since bounced back with more recent success. He won the Prix Alain du Breil with Kervala du Berlais at the Grande Course de Haies de Printemps in May. That netted the trainer his chunk of a £150,000 winner's prize and marked one of the biggest results of his career shortly before this latest setback.

The release confirming Cottin's ban did not state explicitly how he had breached the terms of his licence. French racing journalist Adrien Cugnasse told the Nick Luck Daily podcast earlier this year more on the 'sad story'. The reporter claimed Cottin was trying to buy Champagne at the bar at Auteuil but 'went crazy' when his card didn't work. He was then allegedly given a two-month ban from the racecourse after an argument with a bar worker. Cugnasse then went onto divulge unconfirmed reports of a 'street fight' involving Cottin. Shes Perfect team unsuccessful in French Guineas appeal

The Charlie Fellowes-trained filly passed the post first at ParisLongchamp, a nose ahead of hot favourite Zarigana, but the placings were reversed after the pair came close together over a furlong out, with the French officials deciding the interference was enough to have affected the result. Zarigana's jockey Mickael Barzalona also dropped his whip in the closing stages and then proceeded to slap his mount on the neck as a form of encouragement, raising concerns from Fellowes and Shes Perfect's owners, the Basher Watts Syndicate. However, after hearing the appeal on Tuesday, France Galop confirmed the Classic result on Wednesday. 'I didn't really know what to expect, I think it was a really difficult decision to make,' Fellowes told the PA news agency. 'You only have to look at the comments on social media, it really was 50-50. Some thought it was incredibly harsh and some thought it was a fair outcome. Breaking: The French 1000 Guineas appeal has been dismissed and Zarigana keeps the race over Shes Perfect — At The Races (@AtTheRaces) May 21, 2025 'That was probably a fair reflection on the incident, the front-on camera looks awful but from the camera behind and overhead it looks as if she's done very little. 'It was a very, very hard case and I'm sure it wasn't a decision that was taken lightly. 'Obviously I'm absolutely gutted, it's a very big deal for my yard. I've got 40 horses in and to win a Classic, a Group One, is huge for us and to have it taken away under these circumstances is difficult. 'In those Group Ones we just don't seem to have much luck, you only have to go back to Prince Of Arran in his third attempt at the Melbourne Cup. 'It's gutting, but I completely respect the decision and maybe there'll be a rematch at Ascot in June. 'If I had a pound for every time someone has messaged me since last Sunday saying 'at least you know you have a good filly on your hands' I would be a very rich man! 'It is true, we've got a very talented filly and wherever she runs next she's going to be one of the favourites for a big race. Whether that's the Prix de Diane or the Coronation we haven't decided, but she's a filly to really look forward to for the rest of the season. 'It's an amazing story and the ownership group are fantastic. She couldn't have taken the race in France any better, she's fresh and well and raring to go again.'
