RIDE Cymru motorcycle challenge raises funds for NSPCC
The 2025 event again 'kick started' from the World famous heritage site Pontcysyllte Aqueduct providing the backdrop to a superb sunshine start of the annual five-day long distance motorcycle challenge. This year's charity event began in Trevor, Wrexham (Image: RIDE Cymru) All entrants who dress as the motorcycle stunt legend Evel Knievel lined across the Aqueduct to welcome the family of Evel Knievel who came across by narrowboat to officially start the event after flying over from the USA. The Fron Male Voice Choir sprang into voice as the Knievel family arrived in Trevor Basin. Welcoming the Knievel family on their first ever visit to Wales, and then singing the Cymru Knievel motorcyclists off on their now 14th annual charity event. The team in London (Image: RIDE Cymru) First undertaken in May 2012 as a 'one off' in the hope to simply raise £1,000 for a family member, the event has returned each year since to now total £295,000 for charities and good causes. This years event alone has now raised nearly £40,000 for children's charity NSPCC. The Fron Male Voice Choir sprang into voice as the Knievel family arrived in Trevor Basin (Image: RIDE Cymru) The event which is historically the 1,070 mile outer perimeter of Wales was amended this year to a swifter 750 mile 'A Road' perimeter. This enabled riders to then ride down to London once the loop of Wales had been completed back in Wrexham. Riders then joined the Knievel family at Wembley Stadium where the 50th anniversary of their late father jumping 13 London Merlin buses back in May 1975 was celebrated. The RIDE Cymru this year had 50 suited Cymru Knievel entrants to acknowledge the 50-years. One of these riders being Wales Rugby Union Ian Gough who has 64 caps for his country. RIDE Cymru Knievels returns again next year for 2026 when Chirk Castle will be the special Wrexham County location for the fun colorful start as riders return to the original gritty outer lanes of Wales. Welsh opera star Stuart Burrows dies aged 92
Welsh opera star Stuart Burrows dies aged 92 He has been described as the 'great Welsh opera singer as the greatest lyric tenor of his generation' Portrait of opera singer Stuart Burrows, September 1983 (Image: Tim Roney/) Welsh tenor Stuart Burrows has died at the age of 92 after a short illness, his son has confirmed. Born in Cilfynydd, in Rhondda Cynon Taf, his voice was world-renowned. He first sang with the Welsh National Opera in the early 1960s. He performed in some of the most famous venues in the world including La Scala in Milan, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Carnegie Hall, and the Royal Opera House in London. In 1965, his career took off after the composer Igor Stravinsky asked him to perform Oedipus Rex in Athens. He was particularly well known for singing music by Mozart and in the 1970s and 80s, but then reached even more people with his own BBC Two series, Stuart Burrows Sings. Before becoming a professional singer, he was also a talented rugby player and turned down an offer to play for Leeds so he could focus on his music. Over the years he has received a number of honours including an OBE in 2007 for his services to music and honorary awards from Welsh universities. Broadcaster Beverley Humphreys said he had an "astounding career" and a voice that "touched hearts all over the world". His son, Mark, shared the news of his passing on Facebook , writing: 'It is with very great sadness that I write about the passing of my lovely Dad this morning after a short illness Words cannot express how much I will miss this true Welshman who (as he liked to say) loved to sing a bit! The Fron Male Voice Choir shared: 'We at the Fron Male Voice Choir had the great honour of sharing the stage with Stuart Burrows at Venue Cymru, Llandudno – a memory we will always treasure. "Aled, who was mentored by Burrows as a boy, described the great Welsh opera singer as the greatest lyric tenor of his generation, adding, how lucky that we still have recordings of his to enjoy." Labour MP for Rhondda and Ogmore Chris Bryant also shared in a post on X: "Really sad to hear that the magnificent tenor, the Rhondda's own Stuart Burrows has died aged 94. Requiescat in pace."

Fron male voice choir performing in Buckley this weekend
The Fron Male Voice Choir is performing at the Bistre Emmanuel Parish Church in Buckley on Saturday (June 21). Fron Male Voice Choir, esteemed for its musical excellence, holds a distinguished record with multiple acclaimed albums and sought-after recording contracts. Founded shortly after the Second World War, the choir's international presence shines too, having triumphed at prestigious events like the Llangollen Eisteddfod on four separate occasions. The choir became notable when the Universal Music Group album Voices of the Valley was released in November 2006, reaching number 9 on the UK album chart. It became the fastest-selling classical record of all time, achieving gold status in three days and, by 2009, had sold over half a million copies.
