Welsh opera star Stuart Burrows dies aged 92

Welsh tenor Stuart Burrows has died at the age of 92 after a short illness, his son has confirmed. Born in Cilfynydd, in Rhondda Cynon Taf, his voice was world-renowned. He first sang with the Welsh National Opera in the early 1960s.
He performed in some of the most famous venues in the world including La Scala in Milan, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Carnegie Hall, and the Royal Opera House in London. In 1965, his career took off after the composer Igor Stravinsky asked him to perform Oedipus Rex in Athens.
He was particularly well known for singing music by Mozart and in the 1970s and 80s, but then reached even more people with his own BBC Two series, Stuart Burrows Sings. Before becoming a professional singer, he was also a talented rugby player and turned down an offer to play for Leeds so he could focus on his music. Over the years he has received a number of honours including an OBE in 2007 for his services to music and honorary awards from Welsh universities.
Broadcaster Beverley Humphreys said he had an "astounding career" and a voice that "touched hearts all over the world".
His son, Mark, shared the news of his passing on Facebook , writing: 'It is with very great sadness that I write about the passing of my lovely Dad this morning after a short illness Words cannot express how much I will miss this true Welshman who (as he liked to say) loved to sing a bit!

The Fron Male Voice Choir shared: 'We at the Fron Male Voice Choir had the great honour of sharing the stage with Stuart Burrows at Venue Cymru, Llandudno – a memory we will always treasure.
"His warmth, humility, and extraordinary musicianship left a lasting impression on all who were present."

Classic FM shared a statement from Aled Jones. "Aled, who was mentored by Burrows as a boy, described the great Welsh opera singer as the greatest lyric tenor of his generation, adding, how lucky that we still have recordings of his to enjoy."
Labour MP for Rhondda and Ogmore Chris Bryant also shared in a post on X: "Really sad to hear that the magnificent tenor, the Rhondda's own Stuart Burrows has died aged 94. Requiescat in pace."

MS for Delyn Last week in the Senedd, I spoke about the incredible contribution of North Wales to our cultural landscape – whether that's the Llangollen International Eisteddfod or the North Wales International Music Festival in St Asaph or our historic heritage at Flint Castle and Greenfield Valley. There's also the jewel in our cultural crown, Theatr Clwyd, which is nearing the end of an inspirational transformation. Culture in Wales isn't a luxury, it's who we are. It empowers, connects and drives our economy and it deserves to be supported not only by Welsh Government and other public bodies but also by our communities, the communities who inspire and attend performances and enjoy the wonderful cultural riches on offer in our corner of Wales. Regular readers of this column will know that the Welsh Government will be banning plastic in wet wipes next year – the legislation is set to come into force in December 2026 and is part of a wider, integrated approach to address the problems created by excess plastic and litter, banning all sorts of single-use and unnecessary plastics in products we all use regularly, something which I kick-started when I was Minister for Environment back in 2016. So it was heartening this week to hear that Nice-Pak in Flint, one of our biggest local employers and one which does a lot of work locally for our communities, is ready for the transition ahead of the legislation by ensuring that 96% of the wipes it manufactures for the UK market are already plastic-free. This is great news for the company and for the environment – well done to the team at Nice-Pak! Finally, a reminder that Mold Carnival is back this Sunday, July 6 – a brilliant local event that brings the whole community together at the Rec and Kendricks Field (Maes Bodlonfa Fields). The day kicks off with a colourful parade at 10:30am from Griffiths Square car park and runs until 6pm with everything from hands-on science fun and special character appearances to live music, dance acts and family entertainment throughout the day. Plus, there'll be free football activities thanks to the FAW and McDonald's as well as Transformer robots! If you're free, do pop down and support this fantastic local day out. BLAS Pontio performance to celebrate Bangor's 1,500th
BLAS Pontio will present Y Rali as part of Bangor's 1,500th celebrations on Saturday, July 12, starting at 1pm at the Clock Tower on Bangor High Street. The event will begin with a public gathering before a procession to the Pontio Arts Centre, ending with a live music finale at 2pm. Manon Gwynant, director at BLAS, said: "The BLAS cast have been in their element in creating a brand-new show together and have set out to put their unique stamp on it in every way. "It is full of colour and pride, and is very much a celebration of what the Welsh language and Bangor mean to them today." The performance will feature BLAS Hŷn and BLAS Bach, and will celebrate the Welsh language, Bangor's heritage, and the community. Y Rali will include theatrical moments, 'immersive' storytelling, and public participation as it 'brings the high street to life'. At Pontio's plaza, the celebrations will conclude with a special musical performance by Hedydd Ioan. Summer fete in Llandrindod Wells raises more than £4,000
A summer fete and garden party held in Llandrindod Wells has raised more than £4,000 to support cancer patients and their families. The Bracken Summer Fete and Garden Party, held on Friday, at The Bracken Trust Centre, was organised by The Bracken Trust, which offers free cancer support services across mid Wales. The event raised £4,025.94, which will go towards supporting patients, families, carers, and bereaved relatives. Emma, charity fundraiser at The Bracken Trust, said: "We cannot thank everyone enough for all the help and support given - there are simply too many people to name individually - but to each and every one of you who had any input into the day, we are truly grateful and could not have pulled off the event without you. "It truly was the epitome of our lovely, local communities and enforced exactly what it means to be a centre for support in the Heart of Wales." More than 20 volunteers helped on the day, including trustees, staff, and members of the fundraising team. This year's event was moved from its usual Saturday slot to a Friday afternoon and evening, attracting around 300 attendees. Steve Deeks-D'Silva, Llandrindod Wells mayor, opened the event with a speech about the trust. Food and drink were provided by The Beefy Boys, Deano's Tiki Bar, and Dan & Tom's Ice Cream Van, while Tesco in Llandrindod Wells donated Welsh cakes. Stalls included cakes, sweets, plants, books, games, and a shop stall. Entertainment was provided by The Bracken Singers, Dai Hilliard, and Llandrindod Wells Theatre Company. TFR Entertainment supplied a PA system and other services free of charge. The event ended with a grand prize draw, with the top prize donated by Graham and Christina Brownley. Emma said: "The event raised an incredible £4,025.94, all of which will go directly towards supporting our patients, their families, carers, and bereaved relatives. "This phenomenal amount could be used to pay for 161 therapies, nurse appointments or counselling sessions, 80 home visits for those unable to attend the centre or a hub in person, or 536 group activity sessions. "And what's even better is that with this amount, our total fundraising amount since January 2025 has reached £18,459.74 – that's 74 per cent of our £25,000 target for 2025 – and it's only June." A third attendee commented: "There's so much on at the weekends locally in the summer, so it was great being on a Friday instead so we could come after work."
