Nat Fyfe: Injured Fremantle Dockers veteran ‘disappointed' but not done with yet, says coach Justin Longmuir
Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir says he feels for a 'disappointed' Nat Fyfe, but maintains hope that the two-time Brownlow medallist can fix his injury issues in time for the business end of the season. Fyfe failed to take to the field in last weekend's win over St Kilda, with the Dockers substitute suffering what was later confirmed as a moderate-grade calf injury in the half-time warm-up. The club estimate the veteran's return date as two-to-four weeks. It marked the latest in a frustrating year for the 33-year-old, who had an interrupted pre-season due to knee surgery before being set back by a hamstring strain at WAFL level. 'He's disappointed,' Longmuir said of Fyfe on Seven. 'It wasn't ideal for anyone on the weekend. 'I feel for him and what he's gone through, being disrupted again by injury this year.' Longmuir said the latest injury blow would have no bearing on the future of the three-time Doig Medal winner, who is out of contract at season's end. 'We'll make those decisions later in the year,' Longmuir said. 'I'm really conscious of living in the moment. I really want to get Fyfey to rehab it as best he can and as quick as he can and get back to putting his hand up for selection again.' Fyfe is yet to play in a finals match since winning the first of his Brownlow Medals in 2015, with the former skipper desperate to return as the Dockers eye September action. Longmuir hailed the impact of his much-discussed ruck duo in the win over the Saints, with Luke Jackson and Sean Darcy pivotal in helping Freo overcome a 14-point deficit in the final term to help extend the club's winning streak to six. 'I thought Sean's ruck work returned to some of his better work, and his aerial (presence) around the ground was strong as well,' Longmuir said. 'They were both strong contributors.'

Nat Fyfe: Fremantle veteran to miss multiple weeks after suffering latest injury setback in substitute's role
Fremantle star Nat Fyfe has been dealt a savage blow with the veteran ruled out for up to four weeks after straining his calf while warming up against St Kilda on Sunday. Fyfe was named as the starting sub against the Saints but remained on the bench for the entire game. Coach Justin Longmuir revealed after the match that Fyfe had reported calf awareness while warming up at half-time but was hopeful he hadn't done too much damage. The news was all bad for the dual Brownlow medallist though after learning he had suffered a strain that will keep him out of action for between two and four weeks. 'Obviously frustrating for Nat after he was able to get some continuity with his body in the last month' said Fremantle Executive General Manager of Football Joe Brierty. 'He will now commence an offloading and reconditioning period and our performance health team will set the program with Nat to return to football in the next few weeks.' The injury comes at a horrible time for Fyfe. He worked hard to recover from knee and hamstring injuries and showed he could have an impact as the sub. But now he will almost certainly have to re-build fitness and confidence in the WAFL before having another opportunity to play at the highest level. The Dockers have won six games in a row and also have Jaeger O'Meara already trying to get back in the team. Star Hayden Young is on a similar timeframe to Fyfe adding more selection pressure. Fyfe hasn't played a final since 2015. He missed Fremantle's 2022 finals run due to injury. Out of contract at the end of the season, the injury will also make it hard for Fyfe to become just the fourth Docker to play 250 games behind David Mundy, Matthew Pavlich and Aaron Sandilands. He is currently sitting on 244 matches.

Nat Fyfe: Fremantle Dockers veteran suffers calf injury despite not playing against St Kilda
Fremantle star Nat Fyfe spent his team's entire win over St Kilda sitting on the bench as the sub because of concerns surrounding a calf injury he reported after the half-time warm up. Fyfe was playing his fourth game of the season and third as sub, but didn't spend one second on the field as the Dockers beat St Kilda by 12 points. The dual Brownlow medallist has had a frustrating year with knee and hamstring injuries, and his season took another twist after reporting calf concerns following the half-time break. 'It came up to the box early in the third quarter that he had some calf awareness,' coach Justin Longmuir said. 'He tried to warm up at half-time, did some run throughs and had some awareness in his calf. I'm not sure whether we could have put him on if we had an injury, but since we didn't have an injury and we didn't have any players really flagging, the safe option was to leave him out of the game.' Longmuir didn't speak to Fyfe about the injury during the game but said the former captain had not shown any signs of the problem during the week. There was an expectation that Fyfe would come on to use his power at stoppages given the Dockers were getting well beaten in clearances. Fyfe needs to continue to play to find a clear role in the team and build match fitness. Longmuir said the strange nature of the injury was a worry. 'It's a bit of a concern of course. We'll see how he pulls up (on Monday) and get it scanned if we need to. We'll see where it takes us but from what I understand it is pretty minor and we didn't have to bring him on,' he said. 'It's a bit of a random one. It's a first for me.'
