Nat Fyfe: Fremantle Dockers veteran suffers calf injury despite not playing against St Kilda
Fyfe was playing his fourth game of the season and third as sub, but didn't spend one second on the field as the Dockers beat St Kilda by 12 points.
The dual Brownlow medallist has had a frustrating year with knee and hamstring injuries, and his season took another twist after reporting calf concerns following the half-time break.
'It came up to the box early in the third quarter that he had some calf awareness,' coach Justin Longmuir said.
'He tried to warm up at half-time, did some run throughs and had some awareness in his calf. I'm not sure whether we could have put him on if we had an injury, but since we didn't have an injury and we didn't have any players really flagging, the safe option was to leave him out of the game.'
Longmuir didn't speak to Fyfe about the injury during the game but said the former captain had not shown any signs of the problem during the week.
There was an expectation that Fyfe would come on to use his power at stoppages given the Dockers were getting well beaten in clearances.
Fyfe needs to continue to play to find a clear role in the team and build match fitness. Longmuir said the strange nature of the injury was a worry.
'It's a bit of a concern of course. We'll see how he pulls up (on Monday) and get it scanned if we need to. We'll see where it takes us but from what I understand it is pretty minor and we didn't have to bring him on,' he said.
'It's a bit of a random one. It's a first for me.'

Nat Fyfe: Injured Fremantle Dockers veteran ‘disappointed' but not done with yet, says coach Justin Longmuir
Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir says he feels for a 'disappointed' Nat Fyfe, but maintains hope that the two-time Brownlow medallist can fix his injury issues in time for the business end of the season. Fyfe failed to take to the field in last weekend's win over St Kilda, with the Dockers substitute suffering what was later confirmed as a moderate-grade calf injury in the half-time warm-up. The club estimate the veteran's return date as two-to-four weeks. It marked the latest in a frustrating year for the 33-year-old, who had an interrupted pre-season due to knee surgery before being set back by a hamstring strain at WAFL level. 'He's disappointed,' Longmuir said of Fyfe on Seven. 'It wasn't ideal for anyone on the weekend. 'I feel for him and what he's gone through, being disrupted again by injury this year.' Longmuir said the latest injury blow would have no bearing on the future of the three-time Doig Medal winner, who is out of contract at season's end. 'We'll make those decisions later in the year,' Longmuir said. 'I'm really conscious of living in the moment. I really want to get Fyfey to rehab it as best he can and as quick as he can and get back to putting his hand up for selection again.' Fyfe is yet to play in a finals match since winning the first of his Brownlow Medals in 2015, with the former skipper desperate to return as the Dockers eye September action. Longmuir hailed the impact of his much-discussed ruck duo in the win over the Saints, with Luke Jackson and Sean Darcy pivotal in helping Freo overcome a 14-point deficit in the final term to help extend the club's winning streak to six. 'I thought Sean's ruck work returned to some of his better work, and his aerial (presence) around the ground was strong as well,' Longmuir said. 'They were both strong contributors.'

Fremantle Dockers: Alex Pearce and Jaeger O'Meara face fitness tests ahead of potential returns against Sydney
Fremantle will make a call on a potential return for Alex Pearce later in the week, with the Dockers skipper in the frame to play his first game in more than a month in Sunday's road clash against Sydney. But fellow veteran Michael Walters' immediate future remains unclear, with a knee issue continuing to trouble the 34-year-old. Pearce has missed the past four matches of Freo's six-game winning streak due to a stress fracture in his shin, but is closing in on a return. Dockers high performance manager Phil Merriman said Pearce, midfielder Jaeger O'Meara and forward Sam Sturt - who has not featured at AFL level this year - would all face fitness tests. 'They need to get through this week of training and will be a test to play,' Dockers high performance manager Phil Merriman said. O'Meara was held out of footy action last weekend after experiencing hamstring tightness. Walters is yet to play an AFL game this year in what could be his final season, and remains without an estimated return date as he works to overcome what the Dockers termed 'ongoing knee soreness'. 'It's really a week-to-week proposition with Sonny, and we just have to track that and see how he goes this week at training to determine his availability,' Merriman said. The Dockers on Monday confirmed two-time Brownlow medallist Nat Fyfe would miss up to four weeks with a moderate-grade calf strain suffered during his half-time warm-up against St Kilda last weekend, rendering him unable to take to the field as Freo's substitute. In brighter news, gun midfielder Hayden Young appears set for a return later this month - and possibly as early as the round 19 blockbuster bout with ladder-leading Collingwood at the MCG - after being listed as two-to-three weeks away from completing his hamstring surgery rehab.
