Farmers demand fair compensation for land acquired for power transmission lines

Members of the Karnataka State Sugarcane Growers' Association have demanded fair compensation for farmers who have lost their agricultural lands to the 66/11 kV and 220 kV power transmission lines passing through their fields under the Hunsur sub-division from the Gejjeyanavaddaragudi power station. The farmers, who took part in a protest, condemned the authorities for fixing compensation without providing proper information or holding consultations with landowners. They alleged that the officials prepared 'false reports' and fixed compensation without their consent. 'A minimum compensation of ₹6 lakh a gunta should be fixed,' the farmers demanded, pointing out that land prices in layout areas (in Kadakola and Vajamangala areas where power transmission lines also pass through their fields) range between ₹6 lakh and ₹10 lakh a gunta, while the authorities are offering ₹50,000 to ₹60,000, which they described as inadequate. They urged the district administration to withdraw the mandatory Aadhaar registration and meter installation for agricultural pumpset users, continue the Akrama-Sakrama (regularisation) scheme for pumpsets, and provide free electricity connections to farmers whose lands are affected by the high-tension I-Power lines. They also demanded electricity connections to houses constructed within orchards and agricultural fields for the benefit of students and elderly residents. Additional Deputy Commissioner Shivraj received the memorandum from farmers in the absence of Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy. The association's State prganising secretary Attahalli Devaraj, district general secretary Baradanapura Nagaraj, district vice-president Marballi Neelakanthappa, and nearly 100 farmers took part in the protest.

Sugarcane growers in Mysuru meet DC, demand ₹4,500 per tonne

Terming the current Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of ₹150 per tonne for sugarcane as 'unscientific', sugarcane growers in Mysuru have demanded that the government fix the price at ₹4,500 per tonne, as recommended by the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) report. They said that the price fixation needs to be reconsidered in the interest of farmers. In connection with their demands, members of the State Federation of Farmers' Organisations and the State Sugarcane Growers' Association met Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy on Thursday, and submitted a memorandum seeking fulfillment of their long-pending issues. Mr. Reddy had convened a meeting of farmers' representatives at the ZP hall here to discuss the problems of sugarcane growers. Farmers representing various organisations attended. During the meeting, the farmers pointed out that the profits earned by sugar factories from sugarcane by-products should be shared with the growers. Although the Centre had fixed an additional ₹150 per tonne for sugarcane last year, the factories have not implemented the revised rate, they alleged. They demanded that the factories pay the pending dues along with interest. Many farmers argued that the FRP should be considered as the price of produce at the farmers' fields. To prevent losses due to 'incorrect' weighing, they urged the government to establish weighing bridges in front of all sugar factories, they said, in their memorandum. Raising concerns over water for irrigation, the farmers demanded that lakes be filled with water from the Cauvery and Kabini rivers. They also urged the Deputy Commissioner to take strict action against illegal resorts that have cropped up near the Kabini backwaters, and to prevent illegal developments in the future. Leaders including Attahalli Devaraj, Baradanapura Nagaraj, and Kiragasur Shankar were present.

Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar Jayanti on June 4th

The birth anniversary of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar – who was born on June 4, 1884 and ruled from 1902 to 1940, will be a grand affair and marked by profound significance. This was stated by Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy at a preparatory meeting held on Tuesday. He said the celebration will be held on June 4 at Kalamandira from 11.30 a.m. and thousands of people are expected to take part in it. The celebration will be marked by a procession and a slew of events, and all community members will take part in it. P. Shivaraju, Additional Deputy Commissioner, said this year's celebrations in Mysuru will be a State-level event as the Maharaja belonged to this region and made an immense contribution to its overall development. The district administration will conduct the event in a manner so that the ideas and ideals of Nalwadi are imbibed by the public at large, he added. The authorities said that the procession will commence from Venkataramanaswamy temple on the Palace premises and will conclude at Kalamandira, which is the venue for the stage function. The procession will comprise folk and cultural troupe while a portrait of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar will be taken in a procession on a silver chariot. The mounted police and police band will be part of the procession to lend an air of solemnity to the procession, according to the authorities. The procession route and the Kalamandira premises will be spruced up by the Mysuru City Corporation. The attention of the district administration was also drawn to the low-key celebrations in 2024, as the model code of conduct was in place. Hence, it has been decided to make the event a grand affair. The leaders of the Ursu community urged the authorities to celebrate Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar's Jayanti in all districts of the State, while children in schools should be educated about his contribution and progressive views. They also suggested organising essay competitions at district and State levels on the life and contributions of the Maharaja, who was described by Mahatma Gandhi as a Raja Rishi. Mysuru zilla panchayat CEO S. Yukesh Kumar and others were present.
