GITAM achieves global recognition in THE rankings

Visakhapatnam: GITAM Deemed to be University earned significant global recognition in the recently announced Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2025. The prestigious rankings evaluate universities across the globe on their contributions to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), utilising 220 indicators and 105 comprehensive metrics to assess impact. In a major milestone, GITAM has been ranked across all 17 SDGs, a distinction achieved by only a select group of higher education institutions worldwide. This accomplishment places the institution among an elite cadre of global universities that are actively driving sustainable development and societal progress. A standout achievement in this year's rankings is the institution's global top 100 rank in SDG 7 – affordable and clean energy, where the institution secured the 81st position internationally, showcasing its commitment to promoting clean and accessible energy solutions. R Raja Prabhu, director, accreditation, rankings & IQAC, highlighted the institution's progressive journey towards sustainability. In the state of Andhra Pradesh, the institution stands as the only higher education institution to achieve the top position in fulfilling a wide array of SDG targets, including quality education, good health and wellbeing, decent work and economic growth, reduced inequalities, industry, innovation and infrastructure, climate action, etc.

GITAM-NIT-Warangal launch programme in AI to train educators

GITAM Deemed to be University in collaboration with the Electronics & ICT Academy, NIT Warangal, inaugurated a faculty development programme (FDP) on 'AI Innovations in Data Science and Computer Vision,' on Monday, according to a release issued on Tuesday. The FDP, held under the aegis of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), aims to equip faculty, researchers, and industry professionals with a deep understanding of both foundational and advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies. The programme is designed to cover emerging domains such as Generative AI, Explainable AI, and AI applications, in Computer Vision, with emphasis on real-world use-cases and interdisciplinary applications. The inaugural session featured Prof. J. Ravi Kumar from NIT Warangal, a renowned expert in Machine Learning Algorithms, Control Systems, and Digital Signal Processing, as the chief guest. In his address, Prof. Kumar emphasised the urgent need for academia to integrate AI and Machine Learning (AIML) into mainstream curricula, to promote cross-disciplinary research, and prepare students for a data-driven and AI-powered future. He also highlighted the transformative impact of AI, ML across industries, the growing demand for skilled professionals, and the responsibility of academia in shaping ethical and impactful AI innovations.

The programme was designed to cover emerging domains such as generative AI, explainable AI, and AI applications in computer vision, with an emphasis on real-world use-cases and interdisciplinary applications. In his address at the inaugural session, expert in machine learning algorithms, control systems, and digital signal processing, Prof J Ravi Kumar from NIT Warangal stressed on the urgent need for academia to integrate AI and Machine Learning (AIML) into mainstream curriculum, foster cross-disciplinary research and prepare students for a data-driven and AI-powered future. Organised by GITAM in collaboration with the Electronics and ICT Academy and NIT Warangal, the FDP, the event, was aimed at equipping faculty, researchers and industry professionals with a deep understanding of both foundational and advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies. It was held under the aegis of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. Key contributions to the FDP came from G Lakshmeeswari, head of the department of computer science engineering, and K Naveen Kumar, head of AI and data science. Both highlighted the importance of faculty engagement in understanding and exploring new frontiers in AI. FDP coordinator M Rajamani shared that the programme focused on technical training, encouraging collaborative discussions on the current landscape and future directions of AI in sectors like healthcare, education and manufacturing.

PM Modi likely to participate in photoshoot with foreign students on Yoga Day

Around 400 foreign students pursuing their education in various educational institutions in the city are likely to interact with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and even go for a photoshoot during the International Yoga Day celebrations schedule to be held on June 21. According to a tentative schedule, Mr. Modi may interact with the foreign students, a majority of them studying in Andhra University and GITAM Deemed to be University, briefly, sources said. At least 2,000 foreign students from over 50 countries are pursuing their UG, PG and PhD courses in various institutions in the city. These include around 1,000 from AU and 470 from GITAM. With their academic year scheduled to begin in July, most of them have gone on summer vacations. These institutions are bringing the available foreign students to the event and training them in yoga. During a conversation with some foreign students on Thursday with The Hindu, many of them said that the practice session was their first experience as they had never done yoga. 'Many of us are in the habit of going to the gym, playing indoor and outdoor games. Yoga is new for us. We have been practising yoga for the last week and it gives the feeling of wellbeing,' said Victor from Uganda, who pusrusing education in GITAM Deemed to be Unviersity A Japanese national, Soko Takeuchi, who did her PG in yoga in Pune, is currently pursuing her Ph.D at Department of Yoga and Consciousness at Andhra University. She is now a trainer for international students of AU. Every day, 90 to 100 students get trained by her in the international hostel. 'I love yoga. I am happy that I am a trainer for the international students,' Ms. Soko told The Hindu. Elina Mubhengi, an AU student from Nambia said, 'I had read about yoga in my school days, but after joining my course here at AU, I experienced it first hand. I am happy to know that our university has a Yoga Village for individuals who are interested in pursuing courses.' GITAM University Director (International Students Affairs) Prof. K.P.C. Kishan said that many students were not aware of yoga. 'Now, they are learning it and are getting a positive feeling. We have learnt about the special interaction programme with the Prime Minister. We are waiting for the final call from the organisers of the event,' he said. AU International students co-ordinator for yoga event, Prof. N.M Yugandhar said, 'We have been allotted compartment C-2, which is 100 metres away from the main venue at the RK beach. Around 150 foreign students from our university, who have been trained by Japanese yoga expert Soko, will participate in the event.'

The NBA accreditation is a significant endorsement of quality, particularly in engineering and technology programmes. It validates program outcomes, institutional processes, and ensures alignment with international educational standards—thereby enhancing the global mobility and employability of graduates, according to a release here on Saturday. The NBA has accredited GITAM programmes such as in Computer Science, Electronics and Communication, and Biotechnology, and also and Master of Computer Applications.
