Drug peddlers will face action, warns NTR District Collector

VIJAYAWADA: NTR District Collector G Lakshmisha and Commissioner of Police SV Rajasekhar Babu on Thursday issued a stern warning to drug peddlers and users, stating that strict action would be taken against anyone found selling or consuming narcotics in the district. 'The law is strict and no one will be spared,' they said, while addressing participants of a mega walkathon organised from Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The event, organised by the NTR District Police Department, aimed to raise awareness about the drug menace and promote a drug-free district, state, and country. Thousands of students, officials from various departments, and members of NGOs took part in the walkathon. Lakshmisha declared that NTR district stands united in the fight against drugs. 'Drugs will destroy the individual, the family, and eventually harm the entire society,' he said. He added, 'We are appointing Eagle Clubs and campus ambassadors for this initiative.' Commissioner Rajasekhar Babu said, 'The government is taking an iron-fist approach against drugs and is implementing the NDPS Act. We have already booked five individuals under this Act.'

Vijayawada: NTR District Police organised a mega awareness programme with the goal of making Andhra Pradesh a drug-free state at Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium here on Thursday to mark the International Day Against-Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. A mega walkathon was also conducted from the Stadium to Hotel DV Manor on MG Road with participation of around 3,000 people including college students, officials and the staff from various departments. NTR district collector G Lakshmisha, Commissioner of police SV Rajasekhara Babu, East MLA Gadde Ramamohan Rao, DCPs KGV Saritha and ABTS Udayarani, additional DCPs, circle inspectors, sub inspector of police and others participated in the walkathon. Speaking on the occasion, collector Lakshmisha emphasised the need to make NTR district free from drugs and sedatives. Commissioner of police Rajasekhara Babu said this event marks an important step towards achieving a drug-free Andhra Pradesh and NTR District. He informed that in the recent operation, the police identified 125 students who became drug addicts and affirmed that the city police would not rest until drug abuse is totally eradicated.

Vijayawada: Yoga is the cultural treasure of India and daily yoga practice is essential for maintaining good health and well-being, said district Collector G Lakshmisha. He further stated that yoga fosters mental calmness and leads to a happy and healthy life, while addressing International yoga Day celebrations at Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation (IGMC) stadium here on Saturday. Several thousands of yoga lovers, students, government employees and others participated in the celebrations. Chief Commissioner of Land Administration (CCLA) Special Chief Secretary G Jayalakshmi, Vijayawada city Police Commissioner SV Rajasekhar Babu, Joint Collector S Ilakkiya, DCP KGV Saritha, former minister Peetala Sujatha, APNGO State president A Vidyasagar, and others took part in Yoga Day celebrations. Collector Lakshmisha mentioned that for the past month, yoga sessions were held on Yoga Street in the city with the participation from various department officials, staff, voluntary organisations, the Yoga Association, yoga walkers' groups, ex-servicemen, and people from different sections of society. He said around 8,50,000 people were trained in the city and practiced yoga as per the common yoga protocol during the past one month. He emphasised the need for yoga to become a part of everyone's life. He further said yoga fosters mental calmness and leads to a happy and healthy life. He urged every employee to dedicate some time to yoga daily to boost immunity and improve blood circulation. Commissioner of Police (CP) SV Rajasekhar Babu stated that in honor of International Yoga Day, yoga events were conducted for an entire month involving various themes and venues including on BRTS Road and other places like Kondapalli fort, Berm park etc. He said the NTR district set a world record with a floating yoga session on the Krishna River using watercraft. He urged everyone to incorporate yoga into their daily lives, adding that yoga helps relieve stress and brings mental peace. Collector Dr G Lakshmisha presented certificates and mementos to yoga association members, who played key role in achieving the floating yoga world record and to district officials and staff who actively participated in the month-long yoga festival. The month-long Yoga campaign conducted by NTR district administration and other associations ended on Saturday with a mega programme at IGMC stadium.

Vijayawada: International Yoga Day was celebrated on a grand scale across Andhra Pradesh on Saturday, marking the conclusion of the month-long 'Yogandhra' campaign initiated by state govt to promote wellness and a healthy lifestyle. The main event for the 11th International Yoga Day was hosted in Visakhapatnam, while similar large-scale events were held at all district headquarters. In the Amaravati capital region alone, officials estimated a turnout of around two lakh participants. A major highlight was the mega celebration at Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium in Vijayawada, organised by the NTR district administration, where nearly 10,000 people took part. Police commissioner Rajasekhar Babu and district collector Dr G Lakshmisha actively participated. He emphasised the benefits of simple 45-minute daily yoga sessions, particularly in managing chronic illnesses. Yoga activities were also conducted along the dedicated 'Yoga Street' on BRTS Road, which had been operational for the past month as part of the campaign. Vijayawada youth organised a session at Gandhi Stupa on Gandhi Hill, showcasing advanced yoga poses. Similarly, Dr P Krishnaiah, chairman of the AP Pollution Control Board, led a yoga session with staff at Municipal Park in APIIC Colony, where participants were served naturopathic snacks under the guidance of Dr Mantena Satyanarayana Raju. Additionally, yoga was practiced in schools across the state, where students and teachers began their day at 7 am with an hour of yoga to mark the occasion.

VIJAYAWADA: NTR district is set to celebrate International Yoga Day in a festive atmosphere on June 21, with nearly 9 lakh participants expected across 650 ward and village secretariats, according to NTR District Collector G Lakshmisha. The Collector, along with Joint Collector S Ilakkiya, held a video conference with Municipal Commissioners and MPDOs on Thursday to review preparations. He said the district's programme is part of a massive state-wide initiative, with around 2 crore people set to participate. Highlighting the main State-level event in Vizag, where PM Narendra Modi and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will take part, Lakshmisha said nearly 5 lakh people would join the event there. He directed officials to ensure arrangements such as LED screens, laptops, and internet connectivity at local venues to enable live telecast and mass participation. The main district-level celebration will take place at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation (IGMC) Stadium in Vijayawada, where a common yoga protocol will be followed. He instructed that the Swachhanda programme be conducted simultaneously with Yoga Day activities to promote cleanliness and community engagement.
