Common University Act: Direct transfer of faculty member to Gujarat University raises eyebrows
Ahmedabad: With the implementation of the Common University Act in Gujarat, the process of reassigning faculty members across various state universities, including Gujarat University (GU), has begun. Recently, a professor from Sardar Patel University (SPU) was directly transferred to the School of Commerce at GU to fill a vacant position. Sources indicate that more faculty members are now lobbying to secure transfers to preferred universities. The Common Act was introduced to bring uniformity across all state universities and includes provisions for staff and faculty transfers between institutions. Until now, these provisions were largely unimplemented. However, this recent transfer marks one of the first direct uses of the act. Insiders claim the transfer was made through a direct govt order, without following the usual procedure of inviting applications or mutual consent between institutions. Typically, such vacancies would be addressed by seeking formal requests or proposals for mutual transfers. However, no such process was followed in this case. Although the act states that transfers require mutual agreement and govt approval, the state can bypass these steps and issue direct orders if it so desires. More such transfers are expected soon, as lobbying intensifies among professors aiming to shift to GU and other prominent institutions.

e-Samarth: Gondwana & Nagpur Universities get 2nd and 3rd rank
Nagpur: Giving yet another moment of pride to Vidarbha, the Gondwana University (GU) and Nagpur University (NU) have emerged as two of the top three performers in implementation of e-Samarth portal in Maharashtra. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The Gondwana University and Nagpur University have secured the second and third positions, respectively, while Mumbai University leads the state. e-Samarth is a central govt initiative which aims at introducing use of digital technology in all functionalities of the university system across the country. The system brings uniformity, seamless functioning, and reduces reliance on third-party operators in online works. The interface is currently free of cost for public institutions. GU vice-chancellor Prashant Bokare praised his team's efforts despite having limited resources. "Without trained staff or sufficient infrastructure, we managed to implement 39 of the 42 modules," he said. "The finance department saved Rs72 lakh in a year by discontinuing outsourcing and switching to e-Samarth. Similarly, the exam section saved Rs50-60 lakh by holding post-graduate exams through e-Samarth," he said. GU now plans to implement e-Samarth for undergraduate exams next. To enhance efficiency of educational institutions nationwide, the central govt had introduced the Samarth system in 2022. Following directives from the central and state govts, the NU began implementing the e-Samarth system in a phased manner from 2022. At NU, 36 modules have been implemented via its IT cell, covering exams, finance, administration, and academics. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The platform has sped up administrative processes and enabled faster issuance of student certificates. Incidentally, Bokare was holding additional charge of NU when the university started implementing e-Samarth on a full-fledged scale. NU's implementation is overseen by acting VC Madhavi Khode Chaware (IAS), Pro-VC Subhash Kondawar, nodal officer Shweta Barhate, and coordinator Satish Shende, with the IT cell managing technical operations.

GU exemption to see 2,000 students move to third year
Panaji: In a major relief to around 2,000 general stream second-year students, Goa University has issued a circular offering them a relaxation to enter the third year of their programme irrespective of their subject backlogs. This is the first batch of students of the general stream — comprising programmes such as BA, BSc, and BCom — to enter the third year since the implementation of National Education Policy provisions at the college level. As stipulated by the norms, students could not go to the third year if they had a certain number of backlogs. Several affected students petitioned govt seeking a relaxation. GU finally issued the circular on Tuesday providing the relaxation. It informed affiliated general education colleges that a partial amendment concerned has nullified the provision to hold back students. 'Accordingly, students shall be eligible for admission to Semester V irrespective of the number of backlogs in the lower semesters (Semester I to IV),' the circular said. 'This amendment shall be applicable to all students seeking admission to Semester V from the academic year 2025-26 onwards.' The last date for admission to Semester V has been extended to July 26 for these students.

Goa University secures an A+, its highest-ever NAAC grade
Panaji: The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) on Friday awarded the A+ grade to the Goa University after its latest cycle of assessment. This is the best grade yet awarded to Goa's lone and state-run varsity, marking a historic shift for the institution. The A+ grade is a significant jump for the varsity from the B++ grade awarded to it in the last assessment cycle by NAAC in 2022. GU also attained a very high cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.30. Its score in the last cycle was 2.86. 'This achievement is a testimony to the hard work, integrity, and dedication of the entire university fraternity. It inspires us to aim higher and fulfil our vision of becoming a globally recognised centre of excellence,' GU vice-chancellor Harilal B Menon said. The peer committee of NAAC visited Goa University last week. Until now, the highest grade ever awarded in NAAC assessment to the GU was 'A' with a CGPA score of 3.09 in 2014. The NAAC assessment is carried out based on seven parameters — curriculum; teaching-learning and evaluation methods; research, innovation and extension activities; infrastructure and learning resources; student support and progression; governance, leadership and management; and institutional management and best practices. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The jump in the GU's score indicates a significant improvement in all these parameters. A NAAC A+ grade denotes 'very good' performance by a university and is one of the highest recognitions an institute of higher education can achieve. The GU made major changes which appear to have helped improve its grade significantly, including setting up a research park and introducing several new and innovative programmes like masters in AI, and entering into collaboration with institutes of national repute. Recently, the university revised a decades-old policy to remove the two-seat capping on seats reserved for students from other universities per postgraduate programme. It made 10% of seats available to students of other universities in every programme, without a cap. This was to meet diversity and inclusion parameters under national evaluation systems like NAAC. The accreditation process not only helps the institution to identify its strengths and weaknesses but also helps enhance its reputation and influence among stakeholders like students, employers, and funding agencies. The NAAC accreditation is a quality assurance certification awarded to higher education institutions.

Over 40k applications for 4.5k PG seats in GU & affiliated colleges
Guwahati: A rush for admission to Gauhati University (GU) and its affiliated colleges for postgraduate (PG) courses was witnessed this year, with the number of applications crossing the 40,000 mark. GU authorities on Saturday said this year, 15,000 students submitted 42,000 applications, a significant rise from last year's 28,000 applications, for admission in 50 subjects in PG. The total number of seats in PG courses, distributed in GU and its affiliated colleges, is around 4,500. While this trend is considered an encouraging sign for the premier public university of the state, it also exposes the dearth of an adequate number of seats in PG, with many of the qualified applicants being GU pass outs. Officials said this also highlights the need for students to prioritise other skill-based or professional courses that are available in Assam and under GU. However, the dearth of seats to accommodate the qualified graduates is a phenomenon witnessed across different universities in the country. The PG entrance tests for GU admissions were held from Thursday to Saturday. "We have reserved 50 per cent of the PG seats for GU pass outs, whereas the rest are open. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo A few more supernumerary seats (additional) will be there for other NE states to encourage students from the neighbouring states to pursue higher studies in GU," GU registrar Prof Utpal Sarma told TOI. GU vice-chancellor professor Nani Gopal Mahanta said, "Gauhati University has always positioned itself as a hub of knowledge and innovation. We are committed to realising the dreams of every aspiring student. I believe those who appeared for the entrance examinations will attain the results they strive for and progress through the opportunities this university offers." With an A+ accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Gauhati University continues to uphold its commitment to making higher education accessible to all. To ensure wider participation, the examinations were held across 20 centres, including Dibrugarh, Barpeta, Jorhat, Guwahati, Tezpur, Nagaon, Silchar, Lakhimpur, Dhubri, Diphu, Bongaigaon and Shillong. GU, the oldest university in the northeast, recently secured a coveted place in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025, entering the 1,201-1,500 global band. It also featured in the THE Asia University Rankings at 351-400, rising to 48th position among Indian higher-education institutions, the best showing for any university in the region.
