IND vs ENG, 2nd Test: Calm captain, fidgety deputy make for potent combo

Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill Birmingham: Days after Rishabh Pant scripted the famous heist at the Gabba back in 2021, Shubman Gill had said Pant was his 'hero' in the Indian team. Gill had himself set up the fascinating chase with a well-made 91 while opening the batting. Four and a half years later, Gill is India's Test captain and Pant is his deputy. They are still like two peas in a pod. It shows when they bat in a partnership. The conversations often go deep, never mind their fun-loving public personas. They batted together for the first time in a Test against Bangladesh in Chennai last Sept, following Pant's return from injury after the car accident. They put on an imperious 167-run partnership. Here in England, they put together a double-hundred stand in Headingley in the last Test before Saturday's 110-run partnership. Pant appears to be the restless one while Gill exudes calm. The game usually moves very fast when the flamboyant Pant is batting. The chemistry between the two is unmissable. The three big partnerships they have put on, out of the four times that they have batted together, has not only deflated opponents but ensured the two are fast becoming the most important pillars of India's Test batting. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is your tinnitus getting worse? England often resorted to bizarre field settings in a bid to disturb their rhythm, but to no avail. Gill's constant chats helped regulate Pant's adrenaline rush. When Ben Stokes went about adjusting the field after nearly every ball, the duo kept alerting each other. Fifteen minutes before lunch, Pant missed a swat towards square-leg off a flat delivery from Shoaib Bashir. He looked up at Gill and declared that he wasn't going to play that shot again. When Pant suffered the lifethreatening car crash in Dec 2022, Gill was busy with international cricket. A member of Gill's family, however, was sent to stay in a hotel next to the hospital in Dehradun where Pant had been admitted. Their care for each other reflects even when they are fielding. As long as Pant was at the crease, Gill didn't mind playing unconventional cricket to beat the field set for short-pitched bowling. Ravi Shastri , India's head coach during the 2021 Gabba Test, recounted how Pant and Gill made their own plans on the final day of that Test. 'I was walking past them in the dressing room, I overheard them discussing how they would approach the different stages of the game. They had their own plans for the new ball and old ball. They only discussed how they could win. I didn't interject because their minds were ticking. It was best to let them be. They were focused on winning,' Shastri said on air. How did Cheteshwar Pujara meet his soulmate Puja Pabari? All about the journey of a cricketer's wife

When Puja Pabari first sat down with Arvind Pujara, Cheteshwar's father, she assumed the meeting was nothing more than family formality. In an ESPNcricinfo interview with Grace Hayden, they couple revealed that their courtship began not with grand gestures but with a candid conversation and mutual curiosity. Within ninety minutes, 'it felt like we were just two good friends,' Puja recalls in the interview. Over the following six weeks, daily calls cemented a relationship neither had anticipated. Today, as they approach their thirteenth wedding anniversary, Puja's debut book lays bare every milestone: from engagement whispers in Mumbai to sleepless nights in Australia's Covid bubble. How did the Pujaras' meet? Puja didn't recognize Cheteshwar's name when her parents arranged the match in autumn 2012. She met his father, Arvind Pujara, first as Cheteshwar was out for a match. She had initially theorized that he was 'not interested' because of this. When she later met the cricketer, her thoughts changed as she found the conversation 'candid, honest' and free of any checklist. Cheteshwar, who had been touring, welcomed Puja's fresh perspective. 'I wanted to marry someone for who she is rather than the fame I have,' he told Grace Hayden. After an hour-and-a-half chat, they committed to getting to know each other over the next month and a half. Their engagement followed on November 6, 2012; marriage on February 13, 2013, when she took up the surname Pujara. Cheteshwar and Puja found strength in adversity As Pujara's Test career climbed, Puja's role evolved beyond spectator. During the lows of 2014, when Cheteshwar was under pressure and scrutiny, she studied nutrition to help improve his fitness and offered steady emotional support—never overstepping, but always present. She said she knew she had to 'just be there for him the way he needs me to be.' In early 2018, when their daughter Aditi was ten months old and Cheteshwar faced a family medical emergency mid-series in Australia: his father needed to get an ablation procedure done. Puja balanced hospital visits with match updates—all while nurturing a newborn. Meanwhile, Cheteshwar had not been told about the matter until the test started. He states, 'I didn't know anything about my father's health. I only got to know on the second day of the Sydney Test.' He found himself under a lot of pressure, wondering if he should return: 'Do I need to travel back? But she assured me that she was in charge. She knew what she was doing.' His faith in her abilities allowed him to score over a century during the Sydney Test. Later, during the pandemic-bound 2020-21 tour, Puja also endured marathon days watching him absorb relentless bouncers at the Gabba Test, 'sweating and shivering' through every session, yet trusted him to focus on his job. Behind the scenes of the book Puja has been journaling since 2013 and granted her husband full editorial freedom. Cheteshwar admits he felt 'nervous' opening the manuscript, but reading her accounts of their arranged-marriage genesis and shared trials moved him deeply. In the author's note of the book The Diary of a Cricketer's Wife: A Very Unusual Memoir, she writes: 'If a smile can do a job, he prefers not to speak. Secretive, yet with nothing to hide…He does not know how to relax, but is always at peace.' The book unveils what the Pujara's partnership grew into what it is today, and how it's been defined by quiet loyalty.

"Even Babar Azam Was Laughing": Rohit Sharma Reveals Hilarious Moment From T20 World Cup 2024

Former India batter and coach Ravi Shastri has an aura that almost nobody can match. Shastri, who was once popular for his fiery batting performances during his playing days in 80s, went on to coach Team India from 2017 to 2021. Under his coaching, India won the famous Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series against Australia 2-1 in 2021, including the most popular Gabba Test. However, another thing which standsout about Shastri is his way of conducting a toss during a match. With a bold voice and brilliant introduction of the two captains, toss with Shastri becomes a spectacle for the fans. Recently, India ODI skipper Rohit Sharma revealed a hilarious moment from the T20 World Cup 2024 match against Pakistan in New York. Rohit stated that during the toss, he got so lost in Shastri's words he forgot that he was holding the coin and everyone was waiting for him to flip it. He also revealed that this moment even made his counterpart Babar Azam laugh. "Look at Ravi Shastri, I'm enjoying that. In the middle of everything, Ravi Shastri's energy, I forgot that the coin was with me. Even Babar Azam was laughing. In the blue, it's Rohit Sharma, who's ready to punch. In the green Babar's ready to counter punch, it was all fun," said Rohit during an interview with Jio Hotstar. Talking about the match, India scored only 119 runs after being put to bat by Pakistan. However, what happened later was totally unexpected as pacer Jasprit Bumrah completely broke the backbone of Pakistan's batting lineup with his spell of 3/14 as India restricted Pakistan to 113 and won the match by six runs. Later, India went on to lift the T20 World Cup 2024 by defeating South Africa in the summit clash by seven runs. With this win, India ended their 13-year-old ICC trophy drought as their previous title was the Champions Trophy 2013. Nine months later, Rohit-led India also went on to win the Champions Trophy 2025 title in Dubai as Rohit added two ICC titles to his captaincy tenure.

Shamar Joseph targeted in brutal swipe regarding remarks on Konstas: 'You've delivered cr**, you're not Curtly Ambrose'

After facing a loss in the World Test Championship 2023-2025 final against South Africa, Pat Cummins-led Australia are gearing up for a new cycle, and their first Test is an away series against the West Indies. Ahead of the first Test in Barbados, both Australia and the West Indies have been playing mind games, and it is quite surprising to see even the hosts trading barbs at their opponents. Ian Healy tore into Shamar Joseph for the latter's remarks on opening batter Sam Konstas. (REUTERS) Former Australia wicketkeeper-batter Ian Healy has not taken too kindly to Shamar Joseph's comments regarding opening batter Sam Konstas. Ahead of the first Test, Shamar Joseph, while speaking to the media, warned the young Australian, saying, "Just look out, that's all." Australia are without Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne for the series against the West Indies. Young opener Sam Konstas, who had made his debut in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, is ready to open the batting for Australia. Heading into the high-profile three-match series, all eyes are on Shamar Joseph, following his exploits in the Gabba Test against Australia in January 2024. Speaking to SENQ Breakfast co-host Corey Parker, Ian Healy reacted to Joseph's comments directed towards Konstas, saying the pacer has better things to worry about than trading barbs at Sam Konstas. "He's had a terrible year since he went through us at the Gabba. He had this toe that had blown up and didn't think he could play, he got out of his injury bed after someone said just come down and try it, and then he realised 'oh you can play with pain. Shamar has come out today and said to Konstas' just look out and watch what is coming'," said Healy. So he better improve, that's what I'm saying in the dressing room. He's got real trouble. You're not Curtly Ambrose, champ," he added. Marnus Labuschagne dropped from Test team The Australian selectors have dropped Marnus Labuschagne from the squad following his underwhelming returns in the longest format. However, Healy believes the right-hander has it in him to make a turnaround and reclaim his position in the playing XI. "They're still, you know, recognising his value, and they (the selectors) expect him to work his way through it. He's only 30/31. He's got time. I would certainly put it up as a suggestion, Marnus to Glamorgan and give him a lot of breathing space and time to really," said Healy. "Now that it's done, you know, the uncertainty whether I'm gonna get dropped or whether I'm playing. That's probably been the last 6 months for him. Now he can breathe. Now get your technique right and get playing," he added. Speaking about Konstas, he made his Test debut in the Melbourne Test against India. He immediately got under Virat Kohli's skin, as the latter even shoulder-bumped him during the first session of play. He was involved in a heated exchange with Jasprit Bumrah during Day 1 of the Sydney Test. Australia will now take on the West Indies in the first Test of the five-match series in Barbados, beginning June 25.

'Gill is the third-best option': Virender Sehwag believes Rishabh Pant deserved to be captain after Jasprit Bumrah

Virender Sehwag said Shubman Gill was not the second-best option for Test captaincy, calling Rishabh Pant more deserving. Sehwag explained his views by comparing Rishabh Pant to Virat Kohli. read more Ever since the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced Shubman Gill as the new captain of the Indian Test team, there has been a lot of buzz in the cricket world. The latest to share his views on the development is former India cricketer Virender Sehwag. Sehwag said that Shubman Gill was not the second-best option for captaincy after Jasprit Bumrah. According to Sehwag, it was Rishabh Pant who deserved to be India's Test captain when Bumrah reportedly denied the job due to workload pressure and injury concerns. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Sehwag says Pant should have been the captain Speaking on Cricbuzz, Sehwag agreed with the selectors for not choosing Bumrah as captain but disagreed with former cricketer Manoj Tiwary, who said Gill was the second-best choice. When the BCCI announced the squad for the England series last week, Ajit Agarkar said they wanted to pick someone for the long term. 'For a series, Bumrah is okay. But as a long-term option, you need to ask if India play 10 Tests in a year, will he be able to play all those matches? Or, how many matches can he play? That is a major factor in picking a captain. So that I feel was the right decision, because they felt they could not put that pressure and load on Bumrah. Tiwary said Gill is the second-best, but I feel that is Rishabh Pant, and Gill is the third-best,' Sehwag said. Sehwag explains his views Explaining his view, Sehwag said that after Virat Kohli, the player who should be credited for reviving Indian fans' interest in Test cricket is Rishabh Pant. Sehwag cited Pant's performances in Test cricket before he got injured in a car accident that ruled him out of the game for more than a year. Pant famously hit the winning runs in the Gabba Test when India won their second consecutive away series against Australia. 'What Pant did for Test cricket, no other player has done. After Virat Kohli, if there is one player who has compelled fans into watching Test cricket, it's Pant. But because he had that accident, got injured and then came back, he did not have that much of an impact, and hence he was made the vice-captain, thinking that if he can bounce back to form, they can take that decision of making him the captain in the future. But there are very few bowlers who are made the captain. In my career, it was just Anil Kumble, who loved the format, was available and was a certainty in the XI,' Sehwag said. India's chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained why the BCCI picked Shubman Gill as captain instead of Rishabh Pant, who got the role of the deputy. 'I mean, he's the vice-captain. He's been one of our best batters in Test cricket over the last four or five years—around 40 Tests, I believe. He's always had a great view of the game from behind the stumps as a wicketkeeper, and that experience is invaluable. That's why he's Shubman's deputy right now—he can support him with all the experience he brings. He's an incredible player. We're obviously looking at players who can take the team forward in the coming years,' Agarkar said.
