'Gill is the third-best option': Virender Sehwag believes Rishabh Pant deserved to be captain after Jasprit Bumrah
Ever since the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced Shubman Gill as the new captain of the Indian Test team, there has been a lot of buzz in the cricket world. The latest to share his views on the development is former India cricketer Virender Sehwag.
Sehwag said that Shubman Gill was not the second-best option for captaincy after Jasprit Bumrah. According to Sehwag, it was Rishabh Pant who deserved to be India's Test captain when Bumrah reportedly denied the job due to workload pressure and injury concerns.

Sehwag says Pant should have been the captain
Speaking on Cricbuzz, Sehwag agreed with the selectors for not choosing Bumrah as captain but disagreed with former cricketer Manoj Tiwary, who said Gill was the second-best choice. When the BCCI announced the squad for the England series last week, Ajit Agarkar said they wanted to pick someone for the long term.
'For a series, Bumrah is okay. But as a long-term option, you need to ask if India play 10 Tests in a year, will he be able to play all those matches? Or, how many matches can he play? That is a major factor in picking a captain. So that I feel was the right decision, because they felt they could not put that pressure and load on Bumrah. Tiwary said Gill is the second-best, but I feel that is Rishabh Pant, and Gill is the third-best,' Sehwag said.
Sehwag explains his views
Explaining his view, Sehwag said that after Virat Kohli, the player who should be credited for reviving Indian fans' interest in Test cricket is Rishabh Pant. Sehwag cited Pant's performances in Test cricket before he got injured in a car accident that ruled him out of the game for more than a year. Pant famously hit the winning runs in the Gabba Test when India won their second consecutive away series against Australia.
'What Pant did for Test cricket, no other player has done. After Virat Kohli, if there is one player who has compelled fans into watching Test cricket, it's Pant. But because he had that accident, got injured and then came back, he did not have that much of an impact, and hence he was made the vice-captain, thinking that if he can bounce back to form, they can take that decision of making him the captain in the future. But there are very few bowlers who are made the captain. In my career, it was just Anil Kumble, who loved the format, was available and was a certainty in the XI,' Sehwag said.
India's chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained why the BCCI picked Shubman Gill as captain instead of Rishabh Pant, who got the role of the deputy.
'I mean, he's the vice-captain. He's been one of our best batters in Test cricket over the last four or five years—around 40 Tests, I believe. He's always had a great view of the game from behind the stumps as a wicketkeeper, and that experience is invaluable. That's why he's Shubman's deputy right now—he can support him with all the experience he brings. He's an incredible player. We're obviously looking at players who can take the team forward in the coming years,' Agarkar said.

ENG vs IND 3rd Test live streaming: Where to watch Day 5 live for free?
The final day of the third Test between England and India at Lord's will be played today, with the match finely poised and a winner almost certain to emerge. India need 135 more runs to seal victory and take a 2-1 lead in the series, while England require six wickets to do the same. With three full sessions available and a relatively modest target, the chances of a draw are minimal. India will bank on the presence of KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Washington Sundar to guide them home. A series of 30-odd contributions from any of these capable batters might be enough for the visitors to get across the line. However, they'll be tested by a surface that has played tricks throughout the match — even without much grass — and especially under the pressure of Day 5 conditions at Lord's. England, high on adrenaline from the late surge on Day 4, will look to land early blows this morning. If they can remove two or three key batters in the opening hour while keeping the runs in check, they could wrest control and edge closer to an unlikely win. Involuntarily downgrade, rude employees, no communication, bags delayed for over 48 hours,' Erigaisi said in his post. 'This is frustrating. Messages, emails, forms everything done & submitted. From Jahhvi Kapoor to Urvashi Rautela, all the Indian celebrities spotted at Wimbledon 2025
The 2025 edition of Wimbledon saw a notable turnout of Indian celebrities at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, as several public figures from film, fashion, and sport were spotted attending the tournament. Among the first to draw attention were Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas, who were seen in the Royal Box on Centre Court. The couple, regulars at major global events, were captured watching the semi-finals, drawing notice from media and fans alike. Chopra opted for a muted, tailored look in keeping with the tournament's dress code. Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli were also present at the venue, making a rare public appearance together. The couple kept a low profile, watching the matches quietly from the stands. Their visit came as a surprise to many fans, particularly as Sharma has largely stayed away from the spotlight in recent months. Actor Janhvi Kapoor was spotted alongside her rumoured partner Shikhar Pahariya. Kapoor wore a blue-and-white gingham dress from Miu Miu, a label she has frequently sported since her Cannes appearance earlier this year. Veteran actor Neena Gupta also made headlines for choosing to wear a saree to Wimbledon, breaking with the event's typically western dress code. She shared images from her visit on social media, including one with her daughter Masaba Gupta outside the Centre Court North East Hall. Sachin Tendulkar and Anjali Tendulkar were seen applauding key moments from the Royal Box. Tendulkar, who has often spoken about his interest in tennis, appeared relaxed and engaged during the match. Sonam Kapoor arrived in a white pantsuit, leaning into a business-formal look for the occasion. Preity Zinta, attending with husband Gene Goodenough, opted for a retro polka-dot dress. Also in attendance were Milind Soman and Ankita Konwar, who made a coordinated appearance in neutral-toned outfits. Meanwhile, Urvashi Rautela drew attention with a white lace gown and a set of four Labubu dolls she carried during the match that generated significant buzz online.
