‘Glad to have lost the role': Taylor Swift becomes the target of Matty Healy's mother in cutting interview

Taylor Swift was shaded by her ex-boyfriend Matty Healy's mum, Denise Welch, who declared she was 'glad' that she didn't end up as the singer's mother-in-law. Welch targeted the 14-time Grammy winner when asked about the pop star's short-lived romance with her son during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live! Thursday. Welch, a British soap actress and daytime TV fixture, didn't hold back when host Andy Cohen asked for her reaction to Swift's 2024 album, The Tortured Poets Department, which is believed to contain several nods to the rocker. 'Obviously, on pain of death can I talk about that episode, but not being her mother-in-law is a role that I am glad that I lost,' she said, prompting audible gasps from the audience. 'Not that I have anything against her at all,' she went on. 'It was just — it was tricky.' The Big Brother star, 67, then briefly paused before elaborating on her initial answer. 'She — listen, you're not allowed to say anything, and then she writes a whole album about it,' Welch said of the Cruel Summer hit maker, 35. But Welch insisted that Healy, who is the frontman for The 1975, took the aftermath of Swift's eleventh studio album 'all in good grace.' 'He is very happy with his amazing fiancee Gabriella, who is gorgeous,' she went on, referring to the model Gabbriette Bechtel, by her real name. 'So, we've moved on,' Welch added. Healy, 36, and Swift briefly dated from May to June 2023, following the latter's split from British actor Joe Alwyn. During their short-lived romance, the duo were inseparable, with the crooner attending several of her sold-out Eras Tour concerts. They were also often spotted in New York City, including at the Electric Lady recording studio. Following the pair's split, an insider told Entertainment Tonight that they had parted ways due to incompatibility and scheduling issues. When Swift released TTPD in April 2024, it was rumoured that she wrote the album's title track, Guilty As Sin, Down Bad, Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus, The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived and I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can) about Healy. Swift has since moved on with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce over the summer of 2023. Healy, for his part, popped the all-important question to Bechtel in June 2024.

Why Matty Healy and Fiancée Gabbriette Bechtel Didn't Attend Charli xcx and George Daniel's Wedding (Exclusive)

Matty Healy and Gabbriette Bechtel missed Charli xcx and George Daniel's wedding for a good reason. While Ross MacDonald and Adam Hann were in attendance, one band member from The 1975 was noticeably absent. An exclusive source tells PEOPLE that Healy, 36, and his fiancée, 27, couldn't attend their close friends' intimate wedding ceremony at Hackney Town Hall in London on Saturday, July 19, due to prior work commitments. "Matty and Gabbriette weren't able to make the legal ceremony due to her work commitments for I Know What You Did Last Summer keeping them in L.A. this weekend, but they look forward to attending the Sicily wedding," the insider says. Often known by just her nickname, Gabbriette recently made her acting debut in I Know What You Did Last Summer, which is a reboot of the 1997 original slasher film. She stars as Tyler alongside Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Freddie Prinze Jr., and Jennifer Love Hewitt. The red carpet premiere took place in Los Angeles on Monday, July 14, and the movie hit theaters on Friday, July 18. Charli, 32, and Daniel, 35, are planning a much larger, "star-studded" destination wedding in Sicily, Italy, a source previously told PEOPLE. This will give Healy and Gabbriette another chance to partake in their mutual friends' wedding celebrations. "The party's just getting started," the source said. "They have a larger celebration planned for Sicily. They've always dreamed of a big party in Italy. Somewhere beautiful and private, where all their friends can let loose. It will be star-studded. This was always the plan. London was the official wedding, but a big event is happening too and it will be epic." While The 1975 frontman didn't make it to his drummer's wedding ceremony, Healy did celebrate Daniel's bachelor party in Ibiza earlier this month alongside MacDonald and Hann. Healy and Gabbriette remain extremely close with Daniel and his wife, especially considering how Charli was crucial to the couple meeting. In 2019, the 'Boom Clap' singer put together the band Nasty Cherry — and hand-picked Gabbriette to join the group. The Netflix docuseries I'm with the Band: Nasty Cherry chronicled the making of the band, which petered out over the pandemic. By September 2023, Gabbriette and Healy were romantically linked. The pair announced their engagement in June 2024 after attending Charli's Brat show in Brooklyn. Gabbriette shared photos of herself wearing an engagement ring featuring a black gem surrounded by pavé diamonds on her Instagram Stories, and wrote, "MARRYING THE 1975 IS VERY BRAT." "I obviously have known for a few weeks that Matty got engaged," Healy's mother, actress Denise Welch, said on Loose Women that month. "They went over to see their friends Charli and George in New York [last night] and I woke up this morning to the fact they've put it on Instagram. Instagram official ... he's got engaged to Gabriella Bechtel — Gabbriette she's known as. Black diamond; he had it made for her. I couldn't be more thrilled. Matty Healy enjoys a romantic night out with fiancée Gabbriette Bechtel as they join Naomi Campbell at model Natasha Poly's birthday party in Paris

Matty Healy enjoyed a romantic night out with his fiancée Gabbriette Bechtel as they joined Naomi Campbell for a birthday bash in Paris. The 1975 frontman, 36, and the model-musician, 27, stepped out for Russian model Natasha Poly's birthday party at hotel La Réserve on Wednesday. The engaged couple were matching in all-black ensembles, with Gabbriette showing off her tattooed arm in a skintight sleeveless bodysuit with a balloon-style leather skirt. Meanwhile Matty opted for his signature black blazer, paired with a t-shirt, straight leg trousers and trainers. Supermodel Naomi, 55, was also in attendance for the party as she ditched her classic long straightened locks for a stunning curly 'do. Naomi looked effortlessly chic in a black strapless denim dress, featuring a striking 3D effect at the bust. She paired the dress with black stilettos and a variety of colourful bracelets, as well as wearing sunglasses despite the time of night. Matty and Gabbriette have been linked since September 2023, when they were spotted packing on the PDA in New York City, shortly after his well-publicised split from Taylor Swift in June that year. The couple went on to announce their engagement in June 2024 after a whirlwind nine-month romance, with Gabbriette showing off her black diamond ring on Instagram. Matty's mum Denise Welch gave her fans a glimpse into her son and Gabbriette's engagement party in California in May. Denise cuddled up to her daughter-in-law-to-be Gabreitte as she took to her Instagram Stories and re-shared an image from the model's account of the pair looking as glamorous as ever. The bride-to-be simply captioned the adorable snap: 'MAMA.' The engagement party came after Gabbriette shared a passionate kiss with her fiancé at the GQ Men of the Year Awards in Sydney in December after he got into a heated row while defending her to Azealia Banks. The 1975 frontman attended the ceremony in support of his musician partner who was honoured with the International Sensation of the Year award. The influencer took to her Instagram at the time to share a slew of photos from the night, including several smitten snaps of her cosying up to Matty. One shot saw the singer wrap his arms around Gabbriette, while a short video showed him getting down on one knee in front of her, before rising up to share a smooch. Their PDA-filled night came mere hours after Matty engaged in yet another fiery back-and-forth with controversial rapper Azealia Banks. The drama unfolded when Azealia criticised pop superstar and fiancee of Matty's 1975 bandmate George Daniel, Charli XCX, taking to X to tweet: 'Charli used to be sooo pretty. Ugh.' Matty fired back with a scathing response that read: 'All the women you attack seem to be culturally relevant, attractive, divisive and NICE people. I think this makes you jealous cos you're so talented but everything else about you is a failure. Just rap bro.' He then came to the defence of his own fiancée, as he ranted: 'And on that point if I see one little s**t bag twitter barista say ONE thing about my Gabi, EVER, I will use my mental illness to full affect and I will dox and f**k you up. I'm so over pretending to have different standards online cos it's 'not real'. Well, a f***in slap is.' However, an unimpressed Azealia responded by insulting both Gabriette and Matty, as she savagely replied: 'The b***h look[s] like Frankenstein to me. You both look like you share needles. Lmao.' An enraged Matty then issued a wildly dramatic threat, tweeting: 'Talk to me like that I'm not gonna side eye you at an awards do I'll f******slap you so hard I'll get a Guiness world record for the highest a rat some bitch calls a wig has ever flown.' Recognising the inappropriate nature of his outburst, the singer quickly backtracked, apologising: 'Nah I can't be saying I'm gonna hit a girl that's insane I'm sorry. You just can't keep being so mean about my mates and my mrs it's really hurtful gets me well defensive.' After Azealia threatened to sue Matty over his threat of physical violence, he later took to The 1975's Reddit page to issue a grovelling apology saying he had 'let himself down' and that he felt 'gross' for having 'acted violent'. He wrote: 'What a bad day, I really let myself down. I have worked so hard to move past these impulsive self destructive and honestly quite volatile outbursts I have. 'I'm constantly making trouble for myself for no reason, I come back to social media after depressive episodes (which is NOT an excuse) because I often become sober, so as an addict when I'm not using I pick up social media my new way of 'consuming' and changing how I feel. 'I just feel dreadful about how I acted violent – I think Azealia and all obvious flawed people all deep down have a heart and I hate that I have contributed to her mental fragility. She's a human. 'This cultural discourse has become so violent in general. I don't wanna act like I regret who I am or who have been. But Tbh at this point I feel gross even having said anything negative ever about anything – if it's contributed to this culture.'

The ‘It Girl' model who's finally tamed Taylor Swift's bad boy ex Matty Healy…as pair snipe at each other on rival songs

AFTER years of attempts, The 1975 will finally make their Glastonbury debut on the Pyramid stage tonight. And rooting from the sidelines for lead singer Matty Healy, 36, will be his glamorous wife-to-be Gabbriette Bechtel, along with his famous parents Tim Healy and Denise Welch. 14 14 Matty and model Gabbriette, 27, started dating back in September 2023 and got engaged after just nine months, with the singer popping the question with a custom black diamond ring. It certainly matches her goth-light style, with Gabbriette previously telling Vogue her fashion inspiration ranges from 50s pin-up icons to dominatrixes. Speaking about her fiance, she previously told HommeGirls: 'He came to L.A., and we've been in love ever since.' Born to a Mexican mum and German dad, "it-girl" Gabriette began modelling in her late teens and has starred in campaigns for Marc Jacobs, Nike and Savage X Fenty. But she also has a keen interest in the music industry, having been lead singer of punk girl band Nasty Cherry - which hasn't released music since 2021. She was hand-selected by Charli XCX - who is engaged to Matty's The 1975 bandmate, drummer George Daniel - and references the model in her track 360 on the album Brat, with the lyric: "Call me Gabbriette, you're so inspired." Their relationship came hot on the heels of Matty's widely publicised romance with Taylor Swift, 35 - despite him previously declaring in a 2016 interview that he would find it too "de-masculinating" to be her boyfriend. The couple had previously been linked in 2013 before rekindling their romance a decade later - though it only lasted a few months, with a source telling People they were "just having fun" and "it was always casual". Their romance sparked controversy among devoted Taylor fans due to Matty's past battles with heroin and his reputation for courting controversy with his wild on-stage antics. The band was slapped with a £1.9million fine after Matty snogged his bandmate Ross MacDonald on stage in Kuala Lumpur in July 2023 after attacking Malaysia's anti-LGBT laws in an expletive-fuelled rant. Matty also provoked outrage when, while appearing on the Adam Friedland Show in 2023, he laughed when hosts Nick Mullen and Adam referred to rapper Ice Spice - with whom Taylor had collaborated - as an 'Inuit Spice Girl,' and 'chubby Chinese lady.' Several Swifties accused The 1975 frontman for using Taylor as a way to raise his profile - and Matty himself admitted in an interview that he became significantly more famous in 2023. He said: 'Last year, I became a way more well-known public figure for loads of different reasons. The only reason that I was interested in is kind of, like, what I was doing?' According to an insider, Matty is now personally "much more settled than he's ever been", with Gabbriette helping to "keep him more grounded". 14 The couple apparently love playing Fortnite in bed and she loves to cook for him, with them having bonded over their shared love of food. The insider told The Sun: "The band are in a great place, meaning he can finally devote time to his personal life. 'Like most musicians, Matty has played the field, but Gabbriette is who is wants to settle down with. 'Gabbriette has been able to tame his fire and help keep him more grounded. He absolutely loves that she is at the top of her game and independent. Gabbriette has been able to tame his fire and help keep him more grounded. He absolutely loves that she is at the top of her game and independent Source 'She's incredibly busy in her own career, and it means the time they spend together is quality time." And she's even won the approval of Matty's mum, with whom they spent Christmas last year. Denise, 67, said on Loose Women: 'He's got engaged to Gabriella Bechtel - Gabbriette, she's known as. Black diamond; he had it made for her. "I couldn't be more thrilled. We couldn't be happier... she is everything that I would want in a daughter-in-law, and so I'm thrilled.' Gabbriette - who was previously linked to Bob Dylan's model grandson Levi - has made it clear she isn't fazed by catty comments left by Matty's fans on her Instagram page. She claimed: "I don't give a s***. I think it's hilarious. Go for it. Have fun. People have a lot to say, you don't know me at all." Track record 14 14 Matty doesn't have the best track record when it comes to relationships, and himself admitted he's "not very good at them". The rocker dated Halsey, 30, back in 2015 but things ended on a sour note with the America singer insulting his mum on her record Colours. She wrote: 'Your little brother never tells you but he loves you so / You said your mother only smiled on her TV show.' Speaking about their relationship a year after it ended, she said: "We're both attracted to characters, and we saw that in each other. I spent a lot of time watching him and he spent a lot of time loving being watched. "But if you think he's the first red-wine-drinking, pretty-boy rocker in skinny jeans I've been associated with, you're out of your f***ing mind.' He was subsequently linked to FKA Twiggs, but the pair split in 2022 after reportedly dating for three years without ever confirming their relationship publicly. Matty is also rumoured to have dated models Gabriella Brooks and Charlotte D'Alessio, but neither lasted that long. 14 Even before they hooked up, Matty's fame was bolstered by Taylor wearing The 1975 merchandise and going to one of his concerts back in 2013. The gig visit has been said to have led to the pair exchanging numbers, and they were briefly said to be romantically liked. But at the time Matty didn't have many positive things to say about the idea. In a 2016 interview, when Taylor was dating Calvin Harris, Matty told Q magazine: 'I feel like I'm not very good at relationships. "And the reason I mention that is because if I had [properly] gone out with Taylor Swift, I would've been, 'F***ing hell, I am not being Taylor Swift's boyfriend.' "You know, 'F***. That.' That's also a man thing, a de-masculinating, emasculating thing.' He later clarified his comments after people claimed they were misogynistic for feeling threatened by her stardom. "Since she came to my show in December of 2014, I would say that 90 per cent of journalists that have interviewed me have asked about either her as a person or what our 'interaction' was like," he wrote in an open letter, according to Elle. "I have said on countless occasions that I found her to be one of the most gracious, hard working, creatively gifted, and beautiful women that I have had the pleasure to meet. "I personally have a lot of respect and admiration for her. Why would I not?" 'Tribute' to Taylor 14 Many of Taylor's exes have ended up being referenced in her songs - and Matty it seems is no exception. When her latest album Tortured Poets Department released it hinted she'd been in love with the controversial frontman - but also couldn't resist a jibe. Fans reckoned they spotted multiple references to Matty, including 'I'm runnin' back home to you' from Fresh Out The Slammer, which they took to be a reference to her history with the Chocolate singer. They claimed there was another cryptic reference in I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can) with the line: 'The jokes that he told across the bar / Were revolting and far too loud.' Taylor, who is now dating NFL player Travis Kelce, does appear to take aim at him with her track The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, with the lyrics: "You are what you did / And I'll forget you but I'll never forgive / The smallest man who ever lived." Arguably Matty has taken a leaf out of his ex's book when it comes to channelling his relationship angst into his music. Last week The Sun revealed that he will reference his romance with Taylor in a track on The 1975's upcoming album. Among the lyrics is the line: 'Keep your head up Princess, your tiara is falling." A music insider said: 'Everyone at the studio thought this was about Matty's fling with Taylor and their fleeting romance. 'Matty will never publicly comment on his relationships, but he lets his deepest feelings out in his songs and gets everything off his chest. 'Fans will want to listen to the lyrics very carefully.' Glasto 'special guest' The insider told The Sun playing Glastonbury is "a huge deal" for the band and "something they've wanted to make happen for years". 'It's even more special for Matty because he will have his fiancée Gabbriette and his parents stage side rooting for him," they added. 'He's always been career-focused and getting the headline spot on a Friday really shows how important The 1975 has become. It's a culmination of decades of hard work.' And in a bit to make it extra special, The Sun understands Matty plans to bring his actor dad Tim out for a song. "Tim has come out before at Matty's gigs and it's always a crowd pleaser," a source said. "They'll be doing a slow song together as part of the set list." Matty's team has been contacted for comment. 14 14
