American Idol Finale Recap: Did the Right Singer Win Season 23?

We hope the Vatican still has some white smoke left, because a new American Idol winner has finally been chosen! The big reveal came at the end of Sunday's three-hour finale, which welcomed back the Top 14 of Season 23 to perform alongside the show's judges and a dizzying parade of celebrity guests. More from TVLine Grey's Anatomy's Hot New Doc: Did Your First Impression Leave You Wanting Seconds? Will Trent Stars Unpack Finale Cliffhangers: Losing [Spoiler] Would 'Break' Faith in Season 4 - WATCH American Idol Season 23: Who Will Win? And Who Should Win? Vote! Some of those eclectic names included Salt-N-Pepa, who pushed us back to 1986 for several glorious minutes; Good Charlotte, whose timeless whine reminded us of our pop-punk phases; and Jessica Simpson, whose iconic vocals had us running to our pantries, hankering for some chicken of the sea… or is it tuna? Other stand-out moments included Gabby Samone performing 'I Am Changing' with literal Dreamgirl Jennifer Holliday, Kolbi Jordan belting out 'Lady Marmalade' with theee Patti LaBelle, and gospel icon Kirk Franklin getting all kinds of hip-thrusty during his performance with Canaan James Hill. We also got memorable performances from judges Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood and Lionel Richie, as well as their Top 3 doppelgängers — country crooner John Foster, ballad queen Breanna Nix and silky smooth Jamal Roberts. (Seriously, isn't crazy how closely the finalists mirror the judges? The simulation is definitely glitching.) Heading into the finale, 52% of TVLine readers expected to hear Ryan Seacrest call John's name, followed by Jamal in second with 33% and Breanna in a surprisingly distant third with just 15%. As for how our readers actually wanted the finale shake out, those results told a very different story. Despite most viewers predicting that John would win, only 37% felt that he should win, while 44% believed that Jamal deserved to be crowned the winner. Meanwhile, only 19% of the votes went to Breanna. So, did our readers correctly predict how things would shake out? Read on for a full breakdown of how the three finalists fared in Sunday's finale, including which lucky contestant heard their name called at the end of the night. When you're finished, drop a comment with your thoughts. Did the right singer win Season 23? Jelly Roll wanted John to 'go out with a bang,' hence the decision to have him sing Toby Keith's 'Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue,' a performance John dedicated to the people who have supported him along his journey. I had my doubts about this being the explosive moment Jelly Roll hoped it would be, and while it certainly didn't bring the house down, it was still a solid performance — definitely a notch up from what we're used to seeing. Honestly, John put it perfectly when Ryan asked him for his thoughts on the competition: 'It's all going to come down to what American wants to be the next American Idol, what they think the next American Idol is.' This performance showed us exactly who and what John is. Now it's simply America's time to decide. Andy's Grade: 'A-' With so much pressure on their shoulders, it would be understandable for any of these finalists to be a nervous wreck — which only makes more in awe of Jamal, who could not have looked more confident as his pitch-perfect voice navigated every twist and turn of Teeks' 'First Time.' Every beautiful riff sent chills down my spine, and that haunting conclusion threatened to pull my spirit right out of my body. Sometimes I wonder if Jamal knows how truly powerful he is. Andy's Grade: 'A' Jelly Roll encouraged Breanna to continue leaning into her faith, assigning 'Jesus Name (God of Possible)' by Katy Nichole, a song that sat as comfortably in Breanna's spirit as it did in her vocal range. Another fully authentic performance, you could feel her genuine emotion in every note. She also exhibited some really impressive control, pulling back when the moment called for it, and letting loose when the time was right. If you didn't go to church today… yes you did. Andy's Grade: 'A' First of all, I was not prepared for John's deeply emotional hometown visit. Watching him break down in tears while performing 'Tell That Angel I Love Her' for his late friend Maggie, surrounded by a loving community who fully had his back, was a lot to experience. But it was also important to see; it gave us such an important glimpse into who John is as a human, and he's a pretty great one. It also made his follow-up performance of John Denver's 'Take Me Home, Country Roads' all the more meaningful. Am I crazy, or did it feel like he finally came alive here? He was still himself, but he was giving us so much more — and all without being instructed to by a judge or mentor. This was his most authentic performance of the season, and it was fantastic. Andy's Grade: 'A' The Temptations' 'Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)' was the perfect song for Jamal to sing after his hometown visit, which must have felt like a vivid dream to the small-town teacher. But it was indeed real — as real as the incredible orange suit he rocked while effortlessly breezing his way through this timeless jam. Everyone in the audience was fully under Jamal's laidback spell, and I'd be lying if I wasn't feeling a little bewitched myself. Andy's Grade: 'A' First of all, I got way too excited when I learned that Breanna would be performing 'The Climb' by Miley Cyrus. And that excitement turned out to be fully warranted, because she sang the ever-loving heck out of this song, taking the familiar tune to totally unexpected places and completely making it her own. That breakdown? That final belt?! That was incredible. I hesitate to throw around words like 'perfect,' but since Lionel Richie did it first, I'll merely echo was he said. It was absolute perfection. Andy's Grade: 'A+' Then came the not-so-fun part of the show. The finale's second hour kicked off with the reveal that John and Jamal received the most votes, making Breanna the first elimination of the night. I can't say I was surprised to see Breanna end up in third place, as it aligned perfectly with the way TVLine readers have been voting all season long. Still, I have a feeling that Breanna has a bright future on the Christian music circuit, and this isn't the last we've seen of her. With just 15 minutes left in the finale, John returned to the stage for his Round 3 performance of his original song 'Tell That Angel I Love Her.' Even if I didn't know the full backstory of the song, I still would have felt the pain in John's jaw-droppingly mature country voice. Haunting, heartbreaking and real, this was such an impressive presentation — even more so when you think about how much pressure he must have been feeling in the moment, with the highly anticipated reveal coming up in mere minutes. Andy's Grade: 'A' Then came Jamal with an absolutely stunning performance of his own new single, the perfectly named 'Heal.' It was a prayer, it was a call to action, and it was a delight to watch him sing it for the first time on TV. But 'sing' doesn't even feel like the right world. He expelled that song, leaving absolutely everything he had in his being on the Idol stage. Magnificent. Andy's Grade: 'A' With the most votes placed in Idol's history on ABC — allegedly doubling last year's finale total — John and Jamal took center stage in the episode's closing moments, where John was revealed to be the runner-up of Season 23. And that means Jamal Roberts is the winner of American Idol Season 23! I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised to hear Ryan call his name. His journey has been thrilling to watch, and I'm hoping for great things from him. Fingers crossed! Breanna Nix is the last woman standing on ‘American Idol' after the eliminations of Gabby Samone, Mattie Pruitt

Sunday's episode of American Idol turned out to be the end of the road for Gabby Samone and Mattie Pruitt. Their simultaneous eliminations leave just one woman still in the running to win Season 23: Breanna Nix. After 20 million votes were cast during the combined Disney Night/Mother's Day episode, the five contestants who moved on to the next round, in no particular order, were: Breanna, Slater Nalley, John Foster, Jamal Roberts, and Thunderstorm Artis. More from GoldDerby 'The Masked Singer' is skipping the fall season 'to regroup' 'The Voice' sets Season 28 coaches as it shifts to a truncated schedule in the fall 'American Idol' Top 5 revealed as 2 contestants eliminated: Who gave the best performance on 'Disney Night'? Breanna (age 25 from Denton, Texas) performed "Reflection" from Mulan as her Disney Night song, and "Like My Mother Does" by Lauren Alaina as her Mother's Day tribute. The judges were, as always, enthusiastic about her deliveries, as was special guest mentor Lin-Manuel Miranda, who "challenged" her to keep her eyes open and let the audience in during the powerful moments of "Reflection." Luke Bryan noted, "You are always in total control. You never look like you don't have total reigns on your voice. That song was a perfect choice for you." Lionel Richie commented, "You have poise and grace. What I'm loving the most is when you finally just stretch out. You make this song so emotional, so passionate, and the fact that you pull that off is amazing." "I honestly was fighting back tears," said Carrie Underwood. "You just look like you belong exactly where you are." Breanna has never appeared in the bottom of the voting results, and she frequently tops Gold Derby's polls for who performed best on a given night. If she goes on to win the competition, she will only be the fourth woman to prevail since ABC revamped American Idol in 2018. The others were Maddie Poppe in Season 16, Just Sam in Season 18, and Abi Carter in Season 22. Throughout the competition, Breanna has belted out the following tunes on the big stage: "The Trouble With Love Is," "Still Rolling Stones," "Up to the Mountain," "The Show Must Go On," "Open Arms," "Tell Your Heart to Beat Again," "Water Under the Bridge," and "Independence Day." Looking ahead on American Idol, Monday will be the conclusion of Disney Week, with Miranda returning to mentor the remaining five artists. American Idol fans outraged over Carrie Underwood's weird comments to contestant Jamal Roberts as the Top 3 is revealed

American Idol judge Carrie Underwood is coming under fire from fans after some bizarre comments to singer Jamal Roberts. The 42-year-old singer joined the judge's panel this season, replacing Katy Perry, 20 years after the Idol win that launched her career. Only five singers remained - Slater Nalley, John Foster, Thunderstorm Artis, Breanna Nix and Jamal Roberts - after Gabby Samone and Mattie Pruitt were sent home on Sunday. All five singers performed twice once again, with two singers being sent home via America's vote when it was all said and done - Slater Nalley and Thunderstorm Artis. While fans were outraged by Sunday night's results, that wasn't necessarily the case on Monday's episode, though many did take Underwood to task. Many were furious after she told the 27-year-old Roberts, now the last Black singer left in the field, to 'move around and entertain.' Roberts chose Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's Ain't No Mountain High Enough from the 2000 Disney sports film Remember the Titans, with Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie giving him a standing ovation while Carrie Underwood remained seated. His performance elicited a huge response from the crowd, with judge Luke Bryan saying, 'You deserve every bit of this.' Lionel Richie was floored by his ability to transform certain songs, which he called the singer's ability to, 'Jamalerize' a song, adding the performance was, 'amazing' while encouraging fans to vote. While Carrie Underwood admitted that Jamal's, 'voice is incredible,' she surprised many fans by saying, 'I feel like you missed such an opportunity to move around and entertain.' She added, 'We are getting close to the end here, it is time to pull out all the stops. And we know you have that in you. So like pull us all in not just with your voice but everything else going on. Put 100% of yourself into it. Let's go.' After his second performance - a soulful rendition of the title song from Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Carrie was seemingly speechless, telling the other judges to speak. Lionel said that only Jamal could pull off turning Beauty and the Beast into an R&B song while Luke simply said, 'Let's win this thing, baby! Let's win this thing!' Jamal was voted through to the Top 3 and will have a chance to win the competition on Sunday night's finale, though many found Carrie's comments quite off-putting. In fact, some even went so far as to say that they didn't want to see her return to the judge's table for Season 24.
