BU tightens campus security
Berhampur: Authorities at Berhampur University have taken strict measures to ensure the safety of girl students on campus after an incident at a govt college in Balasore, where a 20-year-old student sustained critical injuries after setting herself ablaze on Saturday following alleged sexual harassment by a teacher. Geetanjali Dash, vice-chancellor of Berhampur University, said campus security had been strengthened by deploying an adequate number of security guards. "In the coming day, we will take measures to randomly check students' identity cards on campus to filter the entry of outsiders." She added that action was taken against teachers from the Odia, English, and History departments in the last two and a half years after complaints were received from girl students and research scholars."We have taken prompt action against the teachers as soon as complaints were received and have adopted a zero-tolerance policy," she said. Dash added, "Another complaint was received against an assistant teacher engaged on a contractual basis. An inquiry is underway, and the teacher will be disengaged if the complaint is found to be true."

BU hosts menstrual hygiene awareness drive
Berhampur: In a spirited initiative to destigmatise menstruation and foster awareness among the youth, Berhampur University organised a public health outreach programme titled 'Let's Talk Periods', focusing on menstrual health and hygiene. The event was a joint endeavour by IFI Foundation, Swasthya Plus and OdishaLIVE, in collaboration with the University. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from hundreds of students and faculty members. Gracing the occasion as Chief Guest, Geetanjali Dash, Vice Chancellor of Berhampur University, highlighted the importance of education in combating menstrual taboos. 'Menstruation is a natural biological process. Yet, societal stigma still shackles the lives of many women. Educating and engaging the youth is key to changing this narrative at grassroots levels,' she said. Pranati Parida, Co-Chair of IFI Foundation and Chair of the campaign, underlined the relevance of the initiative: 'Menstrual hygiene is directly linked to the physical and emotional well-being of women. Our aim is to empower the youth to become informed ambassadors of change.' A campaign brochure filled with informative content and links to educational resources was launched during the event. Students added vibrancy with poster presentations carrying strong social messages around sustainable menstrual practices. The programme also featured the screening of an informative A-to-Z video capsule on menstrual health, addressing associated health concerns in a youth-friendly manner. Expert insights were shared by Kusum Dash, Senior Consultant (Gynaecology & Obstetrics) at Kalinga Hospital, and Sanjukta Sabat, public health educator, who interacted with the audience. Dignitaries such as Sukant Kumar Tripathy, Chairman, PG Council; Bandita Kumari Panda, Head of Journalism & Mass Communication and Nilambar Rath, Editor & CEO of OdishaLIVE, enriched the occasion with their presence and perspectives. The programme was moderated by Priyanka Sucharita, with coordination support from Amit Kumar Mohanty, Sitansu Shekhar Sutar and Sushree Smita Behera of OdishaLIVE and Swasthya Plus. No permanent faculty & VC affect work in Khallikote univ
Bhubaneswar: Khallikote Unitary University (KUU), Berhampur, does not have a permanent vice-chancellor (VC) or a single permanent faculty member though it has 112 sanctioned posts. Currently, guest faculty run the show. With no permanent faculty, research could not be started in the university. The century-old Khallikote Autonomous College was upgraded into a cluster university on May 30, 2015, by taking five colleges from Berhampur University. Later, it was converted into Khallikote Research Intensive University. The govt again renamed it as Khallikote University. Finally, it was declared Khallikote Unitary University on Aug 1, 2021, without having any affiliated colleges. "Even the University Grants Commission (UGC) got confused after finding several forms and names of a university. It could not issue recognition under section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956 for quite some time. Finally, it got this recognition in August last year after submission of proper documents. But it is the most neglected university of the state," said a university official. Mohanty told TOI that a land patch given for KUU's campus was surrendered to the govt. "Now the university is functioning from the erstwhile Khallikote Autonomous College campus. The existing campus does not have enough space for expansion. If the govt hands over the OSRTC depot of around two acres beside the college, it will immensely help KUU. We wrote letters to the govt about this, but nothing materialised," he added. He said an acute shortage of non-teaching staff is another problem of the university. "Research is a non-starter here due to lack of permanent teaching staff. It is relying entirely on guest faculty members and teachers from the erstwhile Khallikote Autonomous College. Infrastructure inadequacy should be resolved too," he added. Dash said the university needs to get recognition under section 12 (B) of the UGC Act to receive central assistance. "But there is a problem in this. This university has to get NAAC accreditation to apply for this recognition. Before we submitted the proposal, the NAAC closed its portal for receiving applications," she added. She said a big PG hostel having 28 rooms is in a dilapidated condition. Its roof and walls have cracks. "We have taken a decision not to allow any student to stay in the hostel from this academic year. We have some old buildings, and they need renovation," she added.
