Battle for white jersey takes centre stage on Tour

Young guns Onley and Lipowitz vie for the podium. The Tour de France will make its usual entry into Paris this weekend as the 2025 tour wraps up. Picture: Firas Abdullah/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images His rivals have tried mightily to dislodge Tadej Pogacar from the yellow jersey of the Tour de France but he has withstood all the tricks and tactics they've applied over three weeks and 18 stages – and simply counterpunched and left them floundering. He will win the race in Paris on Sunday – you can bet on it. Actually, there's no point in betting on it; you'll win just one cent for every rand wagered on the Slovenian superstar at odds of 1.01. Second-placed Jonas Vingegaard has blown out on an Alpine breeze to 23.00 for the Win. There are other bets to be had as the Tour winds up – with another mountain stage on Friday and a hilly stage on Saturday, before the honour parade into Paris on Sunday. Third place and best young rider One intriguing battle is between Germany's Florian Lipowitz and Britain's Oscar Onley for third place overall – and, simultaneously, for the white jersey that signifies the best young rider. Lipowitz leads Onley by 22 seconds after Thursday's brutal stage in the Alps, with the latter passing the former on the road of the climb to the Col de la Loze but just failing to pass him on the leaderboard. Lipowitz has had a superb Tour. He might have simply had a tough moment on Stage 8 and will bounce back on the ascent to the ski resort of La Plagne. However, Onley is looking stronger as the race reaches a climax. Lipowitz is a 1.65 chance to finish in the top three and Onley is at 2.65. Old warhorse Primoz Roglic is a 5.05 top three chance after hanging in bravely with the top General Classification contenders. Among the many other offerings from Betway are various prominent riders to win a stage. Among the more appealing here are: Vingegaard (no 1.03, yes 7.15), Onley (1.00, 32.00), Quinn Simmons (1.03, 7.15), Wout van Aert (1.10, 5.00) and Jordi Meeus (1.00, 9.90). These Betway odds are correct at time of publishing and subject to change.

Sean Kelly hails Ben Healy after racing to Tour de France yellow jersey

Ireland's Ben Healy has taken the Yellow Jersey in the Tour de France. It is a first Irish maillot jaune for 37 years, since Stephen Roche. This followed a powerhouse Bastille Day Stage Ten ride when having been prominent in an early break Healy spent most of the day in virtual a minute to defend on a steep climb some 2.5km out from the finish and in danger of being swamped, the Irish Olympian stayed in the fight and finished third overall. "It was insanely tough. It was a battle against myself and I had to dig in deep and my team-mates put in so much work for me that I really wanted to pay them back," said Healy who is looking to become the first Irish Tour de France winner since Roche won in 1987. "How often do you get an opportunity to put yourself into yellow? I had to take that with two hands and go for it." The first up good news is that Healy gets a day to rest on his laurels, as the riders have Tuesday off before racing resumes on Wednesday with a 156.8km stage around Toulouse. This is expected to produce a sprint finish and is therefore unlikely to shake up General Classification. It will be all change however as Thursday has been flagged as one of the 2025 Tour's hardest stages, a massive Pyrenees climb to the ski resort at Hautacam. As it stands, the UK's Simon Yates took the Stage 10 win with Dutchman Thymen Arensman second some nine seconds back and Healy 31 seconds in turn left Healy in yellow on 37hrs 41mins 49secs, three times winner and race favourite Tadej Pogacar 29 seconds back with Remco Evenepoel at one minute 29 seconds."What a performance by Ben Healy first of all," said Irish cycling legend Sean Kelly as Healy, who rides for the American registered EF Education-EasyPost team crossed the line."And we had seen Pogacar going with a really big attack there in the earlier part of the climb but then knocked it off."I'm sure he got information from his Director Sportif 'you do not have to ride here, you know it's going to be very close to the yellow jersey, let's not push on and allow Ben Healy, after the performance he put in, go'."I think the teams recognised that, we can see here, over there, realised that he was taking over the other jersey."This was the performance of his life For Ben Healy. We've seen doing magnificent things before but today was another step up." Hopes had been high Healy might go well before the race began with Ian Dyer, High Performance Coach to the Ireland Olympic cyclists, noting: "Instinct says we could see Ben begin to prosper once it starts to get hilly. "But I think the complexities behind getting a stage race win kind of really rely on you often getting in the main breakaway of the day and being allowed a little bit of rope to make some headway."Anything in the big mountains would obviously suit Ben as opposed to the flatter stages because all the teams that have got a sprinter in the race are going to want to try and keep the race together, keep the peloton together to deliver a sprinter to the finish." The 24 year-old Healy was born near Birmingham. His grandparents on his father Bryan's side are from Waterford and Cork and they moved to London in the 1960s. He is a two time national champion (once each in the road race and time trial), ridden the road race at the 2020 UCI Road World Championships and represented Ireland at the 2024 Paris Olympics He has previously won a Giro d'Italia stage (2023). There were podium finishes in Liege-Bastogne-Liege and Amstel Gold Race - second to the 2025 tour de France favourite Tadej Pogacar a junior, he has also had stage wins on Tour de l'Avenir and Baby Giro Get the latest sports headlines straight to your inbox by signing up for free email.

Bahrain Victorious stands tall

Lenny Martinez produced a stunning solo ride to win the final stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné on Sunday, marking his third WorldTour stage victory of the season and salvaging what had been a frustrating week for the French climber. The stage, finishing atop Plateau du Mont-Cenis, held sentimental value for the 20-yearold Groupama-FDJ rider, who trained there with his father as a teenager. Having fallen out of General Classification (GC) contention after a tough Queen Stage, Martinez bounced back in style. Making the Break Count The final day's early breakaway gained a three-minute advantage on the peloton, and with 8km to go, only Enric Mas of Movistar remained ahead. Martinez launched his decisive move at that point, dropping Mas and attacking solo up the Col du Mont-Cenis — a 9.6km climb with a punishing average gradient of 6.9%. Despite the looming threat of GC heavyweights Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard behind, Martinez held a steady pace, crested the climb with over 40 seconds to spare, and maintained his lead to take a memorable stage win. Redemption for Martinez An emotional Lenny Martinez at the finish line said, 'Earlier, I was really bad, and I hadn't been feeling great the days before either. So I wasn't expecting much. But then I finally felt good at the start, so I decided to go for it. At one point, I thought Van der Poel was going to win, then I thought I was going to get caught by the Pogacar-Vingegaard duo a little later. It would have been a real shame, but it worked out! I was going all out until the last kilometre and it was only at the end that I really believed it was possible to win. I'm very happy with my performance in the Dauphiné. I came here for the overall classification: it didn't work out, but I've salvaged the week. The team told me never to give up, so that's why I tried again. Now we can be proud of what we've done here with this victory. I hope to win in the Tour too, we'll see.' Bahrain Victorious Impresses While Martinez took the headlines for the stage, Bahrain Victorious continued to make an impression throughout the race. Their aggressive tactics and strong team performances reinforced their presence in the peloton, setting the stage for a promising summer campaign. Pogacar Seals the Title Overall honours went to UAE Team Emirates' Tadej Pogacar, who secured his maiden Dauphiné crown with another dominant GC ride, holding off Vingegaard and the rest of the elite field across the week. With the Tour de France fast approaching, the Critérium once again proved its value as a proving ground — and for Martinez and Bahrain Victorious alike, it offered a timely reminder of what's possible when the strategy is right and
