How Chinese Is Zuckerberg's AI Campaign?
This is Bloomberg Opinion Today, a concentrated concatenation of Bloomberg Opinion's opinions. Sign up here. I've always accepted Moore's Law as a comfortable truth, very much worth holding. Formulated in 1965 by George Moore, the co-founder of Intel Corp., it posited that because the number of components on a single chip doubles every two years as a result of advances in miniaturization, the same amount of money will get you greater computing power. The price of cybernetic advancement will therefore go down. That's been true of semiconductors for decades. It does not, however, apply to the humans who devise all the technological process — as demonstrated by the revelations of what Mark Zuckerberg is willing to pay AI pioneers to abandon their employers and come over to Meta Platforms Inc, the home of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

Texas braces for more flash floods as rescuers search for survivors
KERRVILLE, Texas—Parts of Texas devastated by flash floods that left at least 82 dead over the holiday weekend were braced for more heavy rains as forecasters extended flood warnings through Monday evening. Search and rescue operations continued into the early hours, with an unknown number of people still missing. At a summer camp on the banks of the Guadalupe River in the state's Hill Country, nearly a dozen girls remained unaccounted for. Rescuers combing the swollen banks of the river were holding out hope that survivors might still be found, but bad weather interrupted ground-and-air operations Sunday. Some areas could expect up to 10 inches of rain Monday, the National Weather Service said.'There remains a threat of flash flooding from slow-moving heavy rains overnight and through the day on Monday," the weather service said. 'Rainfall rates will be very intense in the heaviest showers and storms." The current flood warnings would remain in effect until at least 7 p.m. local time, the weather service of the 82 fatalities so far were recorded in Kerr County, along the Guadalupe River basin. Of the 68 dead in Kerr County, 40 were adults and 28 were children, according to the Kerr County Sheriff's Office. Another 14 fatalities were recorded in other flood-hit counties. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott urged central Texans to be 'extraordinarily cautious" on roads and alert to evacuation warnings for the next 24 to 48 hours because of flash flood risks. The area was crowded with families and campers preparing to enjoy the July Fourth holiday when pounding rain brought about catastrophic flash floods just before dawn Friday. Homes were wiped out and vehicles, RVs and summer cabins were carried away by the raging waters. A warning for potential flash flooding in parts of Central Texas was issued Thursday afternoon by the National Weather Service. By the early hours of Friday, after a storm system had stalled over the area and dumped far more rain than had been forecast, the weather service warned of imminent flash floods in the area around Camp Mystic. A wave of water surged through the river, with the worst of the flooding near the camp happening between about 4 a.m. and 4:30 a.m., according to a flood gauge. U.S. Border Patrol officers search through debris along the Guadalupe River. Further downstream in Kerrville, the river rose almost 35 feet in the early hours. Sirens went off in a neighboring county, but Kerr County didn't have an outdoor warning system. Kerrville resident George Moore woke up around 4 a.m. on Friday to the noise of weather alerts. He went outside to pull in a deer feeder and chairs along the banks of the river, where water was rising fast. He woke up his wife, Tammy, and they joined others on the street who were going house to house to wake people up. 'The entire time I was out here, there were camper trailers and all kinds of things hitting those trees in the dark," Moore said, pointing to broken cypress trees. 'I could hear two people somewhere over here hollering for help and there was nothing you could do. It was horrible." Tammy Moore said they called 911 when they realized their street was no longer passable. The operator said that if the water rose too high, they should get on the roof and await rescue. The water halted just a few feet up their yard and no one on their street was hurt. George Moore said that people are blaming the city but he is unhappy with the weather alerts, which come too frequently to know what to take seriously. 'They say a flash flood warning. Well, you get 15 of them and you're going, 'OK, right.'" On Sunday, search-and-rescue crews in helicopters flew low over the river, where massive trees were snapped in half or toppled in huge piles like dominoes, debris tangled in their limbs. Across Kerrville, churches and schools have become makeshift shelters and hubs for families looking for loved ones. Big parking lots have become staging areas for rescue crews and utility trucks, with mobile showers, laundry facilities and food trucks. In the parking lot of the Kerrville Walmart late Sunday afternoon, Kellye Badon gathered with family and friends as they wrapped up day three of the search for her daughter, Joyce Catherine Badon, a 21-year-old student at Savannah College of Art and Design. Joyce Catherine and three friends—Ella Cahill, Aidan Heartfield and Reese Manchaca—were swept from the porch of a home in Hunt, an unincorporated community west of the city, around 4 a.m. on Friday, Kellye Badon said. Just before it happened, Heartfield had called his father and said that water was rising and their cars had washed away. They couldn't get into the attic. At some point, he handed the phone to Joyce Catherine, who spoke briefly to Heartfield's father and told him suddenly, 'They're gone. The current." Joyce Catherine added, 'Tell my mom and dad I love them," her mother recounted, breaking into tears. 'And she was gone," Kellye Badon said. 'What has been disappointing to us is there have not been directions about what to do about people who were not Mystic campers," Badon said. 'We have not received guidance." Lacking that, the Badons and other families have organized a roughly 50-member team of their own. The only thing left of the house is the foundation, but they have mapped the area and gather early each morning to search a seven-mile stretch. It is the kind of unofficial effort that authorities have discouraged, but the Badons say they are determined to look until they find their daughter and her friends. 'She is a strong person," Badon said. 'That is why I am optimistic she is holding on." The current flood warnings will remain in effect through Monday evening. Argos' quarterback Nick Arbuckle had a solid outing, finishing the night 18-for-25 for 269 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Dustin Crum, making his second straight start at quarterback for Ottawa (1-3), was 20-for-30 for 235 yards and one interception., He ran the ball eight times for 60 yards and one TD. Crum endured a tough night though, taking five sacks. Lirim Hajrullahu added a 43-yard field goal in the fourth and Lewis Ward responded with his own 40-yarder to make it 31-16. After struggling in the red zone Ottawa finally gave fans something to cheer about late in the third, as Crum led a seven-play drive capped by his one-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 25-13. Ottawa finally got on the board with a 50-yard field goal as time expired in the half, to trail 18-3. Arbuckle marched the Argos down field and capitalized on the drive when he found Ryan Hunter alone in the end zone to take an 18-0 lead. Ottawa appeared ready to score early in the second quarter when Crum hit Kalil Pimpleton for a 15-yard gain, but as Pimpleton fought for extra yards, he fumbled at the Toronto five-yard line. Slywka scooped it up and raced the length of the field for an Argos touchdown. Jockey James McDonald resumes premiership chase at Wednesday's Randwick-Kensington meeting
Champion jockey James McDonald continues his relentless march towards a seventh successive Sydney premiership with six rides at Randwick's Kensington meeting on Wednesday. McDonald has ridden 81 Sydney winners so far in the 2024-25 and with 11 metropolitan meetings remaining for the season he has a commanding premiership lead over nearest rival Zac Lloyd on 64 wins then Jason Collett on 61. In the history of Sydney racing, only one jockey has won more than six consecutive premierships and that was Hall of Famer George Moore with eight titles in a row between 1961-62 and 1968-89. Although McDonald intends taking a short break before the new season starts on August 1, he is intent on winning his seventh Sydney premiership in a row, and his ninth overall. • 'Ever since I've been back from disqualification (in 2018) I have won the premiership each year,'' McDonald said. 'It's something I am very proud of and it would be lovely to win that title again.'' McDonald hasn't ridden in Sydney since earlier this month as he has been interstate and then travelled to Royal Ascot in England last week he is the star attraction at Wednesday's winter meeting. The world's number-one ranked jockey competes as fiercely at a Sydney midweek meeting as he does in a Group 1 race which is reflected by his consistent results and premiership success in recent years. McDonald, who has ridden exactly 100 career winners at Kensington for a healthy strike-rate of 17.7%, is on favourites Frosty Girl, Pink Shalala and Getafix. Hall of Fame trainer Chris Waller has also had a sensational 2024-25 season with a national record of 19 Group 1 wins and has already secured his 15th consecutive Sydney trainers premiership with 132 winners. He has booked McDonald in five races on Indigo Star, Royal Air Force, Beside The Ocean, Frosty Girl and Pink Shalala. Trainers John O'Shea and Tom Charlton have secured McDonald for the Kensington closer on Getafix. In an exclusive interview with News Corp, McDonald reflected on his outstanding 2024-25 season, his hopes of equalling the national Group 1 riding record, and his horses to watch for the coming spring carnival. â– â– â– â– â– The Group 1 record McDonald is riding favourite Firestorm in the final Group 1 of the season, the $700,000 Tattersall's Tiara (1400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday and if successful he will equal the longstanding national riding record of 16 Group 1 races in a season set by 'Miracle' Mal Johnston in 1979-80. 'Firestorm is definitely a runner's chance,'' McDonald said. 'It would be a huge honour if I could get the record as I have great respect for 'Miracle'. He was an amazing jockey.'' â– â– â– â– â– The season McDonald has enjoyed a career-best season with 21 Group 1 winners so far in 2024-25 including six major race wins overseas. 'It's been a season to dream of, really,'' he said. 'I don't think I could beat what I achieved in the previous years but this season has exceeded them, to be fair. 'I'm extremely proud of my results and I also think back on those near misses in the Saudi Cup and the Dubai Turf so my season could have been off the charts.'' â– â– â– â– â– The highlight ðŸ† AN INCREDIBLE RACE!! 🇯🇵 FOREVER YOUNG DEFEATS ROMANTIC WARRIOR IN THE 2025 SAUDI CUP!! #SaudiCup | @TheSaudiCup | @netkeiba | @JRAVAN_info | @yahagistable | #サウジカップ | #フォーエãƒーヤング — Racing TV (@RacingTV) February 22, 2025 McDonald could easily have nominated his spectacular wins on champion mare Via Sistina in the Cox Plate and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, or any of his successes with Hong Kong superstar Romantic Warrior as his season highlight – but instead he chose a narrow loss in Saudi Arabia! 'It might sound funny but my highlight was the Saudi Cup, even though Romantic Warrior was narrowly beaten,'' he said. 'Obviously, I would have loved to have won the race but I learned so much from that loss. 'It was the most respect I have ever had for a racehorse's performance, to go down fighting like Romantic Warrior did that day (second to Forever Young). The duel those two horses had, and they were 11 lengths clear of the rest of the field, was epic.'' â– â– â– â– â– Romantic Warrior History is made! ðŸ† ROMANTIC WARRIOR becomes the first three-time winner of the Longines Hong Kong Cup for @mcacajamez and Danny Shum! #HKIR | #HKRacing | @HKJC_Racing — At The Races (@AtTheRaces) December 8, 2024 Hong Kong's champion Romantic Warrior underwent surgery for a fetlock injury last month but has made a complete recovery and will return to racing later this year. 'Romantic Warrior seems fine now and will be back for sure,'' McDonald said. 'He will have his first run in November (Group 2 Jockey Club Cup) and then second-up he will be going for a fourth successive Hong Kong (International) Cup in December.'' â– â– â– â– â– The travel Just so good, Voyage Bubble! ðŸ'' We can't believe it's already 11 days since the crowning our second #TripleCrown winner in Hong Kong racing history... @mcacajamez #ThrowbackThursday | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) June 5, 2025 McDonald's hectic schedule had him riding all over the world this season, winning races in Hong Kong, Japan, United Arab Emirates and England as well as his many commitments in Australian racing. 'I knew my schedule was always going to be pretty busy – it's affected my sleep patterns for sure,'' he said. 'I think it was my trips to the Middle East that really knocked me around the most. I did three trips in a few weeks and that took its toll. 'I've had to go to Hong Kong plenty of times but that is sort of in our time-zone and I've got that down to a bit of a fine art now. 'Then to get a winner at Royal Ascot last week was very special and capped off my season. â– â– â– â– â– Horses to watch Did we just see the Golden Slipper winner?! 😮 Wodeton wins brilliantly at Rosehill for @cwallerracing and @mcacajamez! @aus_turf_club | @CoolmoreAus — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) January 18, 2025 McDonald got to put Golden Slipper runner-up Wodeton through his paces at Rosehill trackwork on Tuesday morning which is a sure sign that the countdown to the spring carnival has begun. The champion jockey revealed the horses he believes will make a huge impact in the new season – Chris Waller's outstanding rising four-year-olds mares Autumn Glow, Lady Shenandoah and Aeliana. 'Autumn Glow and Lady Shenandoah look unbelievably good – I think they are the two most exciting horses in the country,'' he said. 'One is trying to keep her unbeaten record intact (Autumn Glow) and the other keeps raising the bar (Lady Shenandoah). 'I would love to get back on Aeliana for sure but that is up to her connections. These three are lightly-raced and untapped, really.''

Ex-NYPD cop gets 3-6 years for L.I. DUI crash that injured 2
A former NYPD officer was sentenced Monday to 3-6 years in prison for a drunk driving crash that injured two women on Long Island in 2023. George Moore, 40, pleaded guilty in the case back in November 2024. Nassau County Judge Howard Sturim told Moore he considered his years of police work before delivering the sentence, Newsday reported. Moore was still an NYPD officer on the morning of Aug. 4, 2023, and was traveling from a night out in Rockville Center to his job in Queens, according to investigators. Moore was behind the wheel of a 2014 Mercedes with a woman in the passenger's seat and speeding along the Meadowbrook State Parkway when he collided with the back of a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, police said. The collision ended with Moore's vehicle upside down and engulfed in flames on the side of the road, cops said. Miraculously, both he and the woman in the passenger's seat survived the wreck. A woman driving the Jeep was also injured but survived. 'As a member of law enforcement, George Moore had a sworn duty to protect and serve the public, yet he did the opposite. He chose to violate that trust by driving while intoxicated and put lives at risk,' Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly said Monday. 'His actions were not only a betrayal of his oath, but also a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of impaired driving.' Moore resigned from the NYPD after the crash.
