Jockey James McDonald resumes premiership chase at Wednesday's Randwick-Kensington meeting

News.com.au24-06-2025
Champion jockey James McDonald continues his relentless march towards a seventh successive Sydney premiership with six rides at Randwick's Kensington meeting on Wednesday.
McDonald has ridden 81 Sydney winners so far in the 2024-25 and with 11 metropolitan meetings remaining for the season he has a commanding premiership lead over nearest rival Zac Lloyd on 64 wins then Jason Collett on 61.
In the history of Sydney racing, only one jockey has won more than six consecutive premierships and that was Hall of Famer George Moore with eight titles in a row between 1961-62 and 1968-89.
Although McDonald intends taking a short break before the new season starts on August 1, he is intent on winning his seventh Sydney premiership in a row, and his ninth overall.

'Ever since I've been back from disqualification (in 2018) I have won the premiership each year,'' McDonald said.
'It's something I am very proud of and it would be lovely to win that title again.''
McDonald hasn't ridden in Sydney since earlier this month as he has been interstate and then travelled to Royal Ascot in England last week he is the star attraction at Wednesday's winter meeting.
The world's number-one ranked jockey competes as fiercely at a Sydney midweek meeting as he does in a Group 1 race which is reflected by his consistent results and premiership success in recent years.
McDonald, who has ridden exactly 100 career winners at Kensington for a healthy strike-rate of 17.7%, is on favourites Frosty Girl, Pink Shalala and Getafix.
Hall of Fame trainer Chris Waller has also had a sensational 2024-25 season with a national record of 19 Group 1 wins and has already secured his 15th consecutive Sydney trainers premiership with 132 winners. He has booked McDonald in five races on Indigo Star, Royal Air Force, Beside The Ocean, Frosty Girl and Pink Shalala.
Trainers John O'Shea and Tom Charlton have secured McDonald for the Kensington closer on Getafix.
In an exclusive interview with News Corp, McDonald reflected on his outstanding 2024-25 season, his hopes of equalling the national Group 1 riding record, and his horses to watch for the coming spring carnival.

The Group 1 record
McDonald is riding favourite Firestorm in the final Group 1 of the season, the $700,000 Tattersall's Tiara (1400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday and if successful he will equal the longstanding national riding record of 16 Group 1 races in a season set by 'Miracle' Mal Johnston in 1979-80.
'Firestorm is definitely a runner's chance,'' McDonald said.
'It would be a huge honour if I could get the record as I have great respect for 'Miracle'. He was an amazing jockey.''

The season
McDonald has enjoyed a career-best season with 21 Group 1 winners so far in 2024-25 including six major race wins overseas.
'It's been a season to dream of, really,'' he said.
'I don't think I could beat what I achieved in the previous years but this season has exceeded them, to be fair.
'I'm extremely proud of my results and I also think back on those near misses in the Saudi Cup and the Dubai Turf so my season could have been off the charts.''

McDonald could easily have nominated his spectacular wins on champion mare Via Sistina in the Cox Plate and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, or any of his successes with Hong Kong superstar Romantic Warrior as his season highlight – but instead he chose a narrow loss in Saudi Arabia!
'It might sound funny but my highlight was the Saudi Cup, even though Romantic Warrior was narrowly beaten,'' he said.
'Obviously, I would have loved to have won the race but I learned so much from that loss.
'It was the most respect I have ever had for a racehorse's performance, to go down fighting like Romantic Warrior did that day (second to Forever Young). The duel those two horses had, and they were 11 lengths clear of the rest of the field, was epic.''

Hong Kong's champion Romantic Warrior underwent surgery for a fetlock injury last month but has made a complete recovery and will return to racing later this year.
'Romantic Warrior seems fine now and will be back for sure,'' McDonald said.
'He will have his first run in November (Group 2 Jockey Club Cup) and then second-up he will be going for a fourth successive Hong Kong (International) Cup in December.''

McDonald's hectic schedule had him riding all over the world this season, winning races in Hong Kong, Japan, United Arab Emirates and England as well as his many commitments in Australian racing.
'I knew my schedule was always going to be pretty busy – it's affected my sleep patterns for sure,'' he said.
'I think it was my trips to the Middle East that really knocked me around the most. I did three trips in a few weeks and that took its toll.
'I've had to go to Hong Kong plenty of times but that is sort of in our time-zone and I've got that down to a bit of a fine art now.
'Then to get a winner at Royal Ascot last week was very special and capped off my season.

McDonald got to put Golden Slipper runner-up Wodeton through his paces at Rosehill trackwork on Tuesday morning which is a sure sign that the countdown to the spring carnival has begun.
The champion jockey revealed the horses he believes will make a huge impact in the new season – Chris Waller's outstanding rising four-year-olds mares Autumn Glow, Lady Shenandoah and Aeliana.
'Autumn Glow and Lady Shenandoah look unbelievably good – I think they are the two most exciting horses in the country,'' he said.
'One is trying to keep her unbeaten record intact (Autumn Glow) and the other keeps raising the bar (Lady Shenandoah).
'I would love to get back on Aeliana for sure but that is up to her connections. These three are lightly-raced and untapped, really.''

Lions send ominous message to Wallabies with Reds demolition

The British and Irish Lions fired an ominous Red Alert across the bow of its Australian rivals on Wednesday to assert early dominance on its tour down under. The Lions' 52-12 Suncorp Stadium taming of Queensland made it 106 points in the first 160 minutes of its six-week tour. The 40-point smashing followed last week's 54-7 winning start over the Force in Perth. Australia beware. This Lions outfit is armed and dangerous and getting better by the minute. Queensland showed plenty of grit and determination early to deny the visitors a score for a tense opening quarter but the Lions lunged hard and fast approaching half time to turn a 12-7 deficit into a 21-12 lead. The visitors turned to its vaunted forward pack and faster and stronger back division to score 26 unanswered points within the next 25 minutes. It turned hope into hell for the Queensland fans that filled Suncorp toward a stunning 46,435 crowd figure. Huw Jones celebrates his try for the British & Irish Lions. Its rampaging second-half surge was the perfect response to a sloped start riddled with errors. In an effective 50-minute stint, timeless scrumhalf Jamison Gibson-Park set up a try and kicked very well for touch. Without doing anything crazy, flyhalf Finn Russell was also a class act whose backline division got slicker as the game endured. Tommy Freeman scores for the British & Irish Lions. Headed by an inspired captain Maro Itoje, the Lions turned Suncorp into its personal playground to have fans heading for the exit with about 10 minutes to go. The Reds simply couldn't contain Itoje across his wholehearted 80-minute performance. He scored a barnstorming try, twice stole lineout ball and ran telling decoy lines that almost created a stunning 20 minutes from time. British and Irish Lions' Jac Morgan celebrates his try. Picture: AFP LIONS SLOW OUT OF THE GATES Earlier, it was more a purr than a roar in the first 20 minutes from the Lions. A sluggish opening gave the impression the Lions would be racing the clock to find its rhythm ahead of the Test-series opener at Lang Park in three weeks time. Those cobwebs were quickly dusted off after initially being denied on four occasions when in the Reds red zone. Part of it was brave defence by the hosts but it was mostly poor handling and average execution from the visitors that saw them come away empty handed. Picture: Getty Images Queensland channelled its 'back against the wall' underdog spirit in an instant and it worked a treat as they repelled their foes four times within the first 16 minutes. Queensland twice won scrum penalties in the first quarter and showed plenty of patience and power when mounting 14 phases to score the first try of the night through prop Jeff Toomaga-Allen. Things were looking up. The Reds then held up Lions midfielder Bundee Aki over the try line, the second time in the opening 12 minutes they held them out. But as the match endured, the Lions hit their stride and the Reds succumbed to sheer power and slick combinations. Jeffery Toomaga-Allen celebrates after opening the scoring for the Reds. Picture: Getty Images FLOOKY ARE YOU SERIOUS? It was Luke Morahan whose 2013 try took the imagination of onlookers and 12 years later it was young Josh Flook who was responsible for Queensland's highlight try. Josh Flook try v Lions The Reds had defended stoically to be level at 7-all and when the space opened up in behind, halfback Kalani Thomas took no prisoners. The daring No.9 dabbed a deft grubber in behind the Lions defence and charging through came Flook to land a 12-7 advantage 27 minutes in. Flook, spearing on a beeline towards the stripe, somehow held on as the ball bobbled up onto his right quad to score. 12-7 was the last time the Reds led. The Lions, spurred on by a ferocious bench unit, did not concede a single point for the final 53 minutes. Tim Ryan gets up to take possession for the Reds. The Lions Tour only comes around once every 12 years, with the Reds falling just short in a 22-12 loss back in 2013. Quade Cooper captained the Reds on that night, and this week the decorated former Wallaby wrote why that experience remains such a major moment in his career. For some, like Hunter Paisami and Matt Faessler, it shapes as an opportunity to show Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt why they deserve a gold jersey later in the tour. Wimbledon 2025 live scores: Doubles action for Aussies early on day three, Jordan Thompson flying the flag in singles

A number of Aussies are in doubles action early on day three at Wimbledon with the last male Australian in the draw set to take the court. But play on the outside courts was delayed by persistent drizzle, postponing the action. Jordan Thompson is set to face Benjamin Bonzi on court 15 overnight (AEST), on a schedule headlined by superstar Carlos Alcaraz. lcaraz will aim to avoid one of Wimbledon's greatest upsets against British amateur Oliver Tarvet after a record-breaking number of seeds crashed out at the All England Club. Their contest will follow the match between women's world number one Aryna Sabalenka and Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic. Alcaraz's meeting with the British qualifier is a classic David against Goliath encounter. While the Spaniard, a five-time Grand Slam champion, is bidding for a third successive Wimbledon crown, world number 733 Tarvet is playing just his second main draw match at the All England Club. 'I'm quietly confident that I can win against anyone,' he said. 'Alcaraz isn't an exception to that. Obviously, he's done an incredible amount in the tennis world. He's a difficult guy not to respect.'

British Lions hit straps to sprint past plucky Reds

Hunter Paisami barged back into Wallabies calculations before the British & Irish Lions swallowed up the fast-starting Queensland Reds in Brisbane. The tourists were made to work for Wednesday's 52-12 victory in front of 46,435 fans at Suncorp Stadium after the hosts scored first and then lead 12-7 midway through the first half. Spots in the Wallabies midfield are at a premium with Len Ikitau and Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii set to combine in the centres against Fiji on Sunday. But bustling centre Paisami, after being pulled from Australia's camp to instead front up against the Lions, gave Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt plenty to ponder ahead of the first Test in Brisbane on July 19. His first touch was a rampaging run that set up Jeffery Toomaga-Allen's first try and he kept the Lions guessing with short kicking and stoic defence. When Kalani Thomas's grubber was brilliantly swept up on the half-volley by Josh Flook to score, the Reds looked a chance of joining their 1899 and 1971 side in knocking off the visitors. The Lions, who beat the Force 54-7 with 14 different starters on Saturday, were clunky early but found their groove approaching halftime. Andrew Porter burrowed over to put them ahead before No.10 Finn Russell, who booted four-of-four conversions before exiting after 50 minutes, straightened the attack and Duhan van der Merwe soared to score inside the left corner post. A wicked bounce denied Lachie Anderson an incredible try when the Lions didn't collect the restart and the ball dribbled dead. Lock Maro Itoje made an impact in his first outing as Lions captain and cashed in with a try after Bundee Aki's storming run and scrumhalf Jamison Gibson-Park darted from the ruck. The Reds got desperate as the match opened up, Huw Jones plucking Tim Ryan's ambitious chip and racing 60 metres to score. Substitute Gary Ringrose iced the contest with an 85th-minute try as the tourists again passed 50. Hooker Matt Faessler, another Wallabies squad member, was solid in a 50-minute stint in his return from a hamstring injury while Lukhan Salakaia-Loto (shoulder) put his case forward after being a regular in Schmidt's teams last year. Russell, the only Lion to start in both games, looked dangerous in his first partnership with Gibson-Park while flanker Jac Morgan earned man-of-the-match honours for his damage around the ruck. Coach Andy Farrell will have a chance to shuffle his deck again when the Lions play the NSW Waratahs on Saturday. They'll also play the Brumbies, who beat the tourists in 2013, and a combined Australia-New Zealand outfit coached by Reds coach Les Kiss, before Brisbane's first Test.
