'Big Bang Theory' Sci-Fi Spinoff Confirmed For HBO Max

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors Max is officially changing back to HBO Max, and with that change it looks the first priority was to put in a series order for another "The Big Bang Theory" spinoff. The series, "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe," stars Kevin Sussman, Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn and Ross Bowie. Comic book store owner Stuart Bloom (Sussman) breaks a device created by Sheldon and Leonard, and as a result sparks a cataclysm throughout the multiverse. "I couldn't resist that idea, so I packed up my yurt and hailed the next dirigible out. At the same time, Chuck sent an expedition to locate Bill Prady, who had been frozen with his shield across his chest in a block of arctic ice." "The team assembled, we set out to make this insane show, which lives in a universe created by Chuck and Bill. I couldn't be more honored to be working with these amazing people." Prady incorporated fewer stories about vision quests in his own statement, saying, "The process of writing this show with Chuck and Zak has been damn fun, and I'm certain that joy will come through the screen." The latest Big Bang Theory universe expansion has the potential to look and feel unlike any offshoot that came before it — and based on several clues, I'm beginning to think it will. Whereas Young Sheldon served as a prequel chronicling Sheldon Cooper's childhood, and sequel-to-the-prequel Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage has continued that story but shifted focus to Sheldon's older brother and sister-in-law, HBO Max's Stuart Fails to Save the Universe will serve as a direct continuation, and pick up after the events of Big Bang's 2019 series finale. But all that will change once the future of humanity is called into question by an otherworldly threat, and the actual Justice League is preoccupied/unable to save the day. And perhaps Stuart will narrate, borrowing a narrative device from Young Sheldon (whose series finale revealed that Dr. Cooper was recounting his East Texas upbringing as part of his memoir). So, that's my working (Big Bang) theory! TVLine will keep you posted as we learn more about Stuart Fails to Save the Universe — and whether my prediction is right.
