'The coach trusts me, and that helps a lot. We've done video analysis together, and in training, he pushes me to give my best. During games, he asks me to be myself and stay focused.' He also gave an update on his recovery after undergoing hand surgery earlier this summer. 'I'm fine now. I was in a cast for three weeks, and at first I was a little worse, but I'm better now, ready to train on Monday and do whatever else I need to do.' With Barcelona heading to Asia for pre-season, Martin is set to join the squad and compete once again for his spot. While Balde may be the top pick, the race for minutes is far from over. Gerard Martin speaks out on links with West Ham, Bournemouth and Wolves
Barcelona full-back Gerard Martin has been linked with a string of Premier League clubs, but has talked down a possible move. The 23-year-old only made his Barcelona debut in August last year and already has a La Liga and Copa del Rey win on his CV. The Spain Under-21 international made 42 appearances across all competitions, with 28 coming in La Liga and eight in the Champions League. How much Martin was involved over the last season was something of a surprise, but it has not been enough for Barcelona to be set on keeping him. Football Espana report that the left-back could be available for as little as €12m (£10.2m) and that has alerted a number of potential suitors. West Ham, Bournemouth and Wolves have all been linked with a move for the Spaniard, with the price tag no issue for Premier League clubs. Martin is not talking up a move, though, saying he is only focussed on Barcelona after an encouraging first season in the first team. 'I don't know, these are things that come out,' Martin told Jijantes of the transfer speculation. 'I am happy with my season, and focused on Barcelona. I'm not thinking about anything else, I'm relaxed.' Martin was in action for Spain Under-21s on Wednesday against Slovakia but has returned from international duty after suffering a fractured hand. Barcelona defender set for surgery after injury on international duty
Barcelona have been relatively injury-free over the course of the season, but saw two of their players go down on international duty at the under-21 Euros on the opening day of competition. One of them is set for surgery. Spain were up against the hosts Slovakia on Wednesday, and after going 2-0 up in the opening 20 minutes, were forced to find a late winner through Cesar Tarrega after Slovakia had mounted a second-half comeback. La Rojita will face Italy and Romania in their remaining group games. Doubts about future Martin enjoyed a decent debut campaign for Barcelona under Hansi Flick, and was set to be Alejandro Balde's alternative next year too. Yet following interest from the Premier League, with three teams looking at him, it has emerged that the Blaugrana would be willing to cash in on Martin. The asking price is reportedly €12m. The 23-year-old was a surprise addition to Barcelona's senior squad last summer after a strong preseason with the side. Martin largely played a back-up role to Alejandro Balde, and despite struggling defensively, did provide two excellent assists for Barcelona against Inter the Champions League semi-final. Lately it has been revealed that Wolves are interested in Martin, and could be willing to bid €12m for him. Barcelona stance on Martin sale Barcelona's stance on the matter is that they will sell Martin if an economically acceptable offer comes in for Martin, say Sport. They recently renewed his contract until 2028, but now Bournemouth have emerged as a second side interested in Martin. They look set to lose current left-back Milos Kerkez, just as Wolves have lost Rayan Ait-Nouri to Manchester City.
