From robots making kebabs to FINALLY ending the McDonald's McFlurry machine malfunctions – how AI is changing fast food
DRIVING up to an ordering kiosk at a Popeyes drive-thru, you would easily think you're being served by a friendly American staff member. But the voice you're hearing actually belongs to 'Al', the US chain's AI robot that has been programmed to take orders at all of its UK drive-thru locations. 5 Popeyes is one of several fast food giants adopting Artificial Intelligence in its operations, and many more could follow suit in the next few years. Restaurant chains have started rolling out the technology to do a range of jobs, from figuring out what new menu items customers want, to even helping make the food in the kitchen. If you're wondering whether robots might be serving you up your next cheeseburger or kebab, these are all the fast-food chains joining the AI revolution. German Doner Kebab German Doner Kebab is planning on replacing humans with robots to slice up its doner meat at all its restaurants within the next year. The major kebab chain, which has almost 150 sites in the UK, is currently trialling robotic meat shavers in a handful of its restaurants. The firm's boss Simon Wallis previously told The Sun the robots actually do a better job than humans, as they "shave the meat more consistently and improve productivity". McDonald's 5 The world's most famous fast food chain has some big plans to roll out AI, and is even using the technology to prevent its McFlurry machines from breaking down. McDonald's announced earlier this year that it wants to introduce the technology to over 40,000 restaurants around the world to help improve its customer experience. Sensors are being added to its fryers and ice-cream machines to help staff predict when they might break down and get them serviced more quickly - which could see an end to the running joke among McDonald's fans that the McFlurry machine is never working. Cameras could also be installed in restaurants, which would use AI facial recognition technology to make sure customers are given the right orders. It's not the first time McDonald's has tried out AI in its restaurants. The chain ended up removing AI ordering from its US drive-thrus last year after videos of the robots' order blunders went viral, from bacon-topped ice cream to customers being served hundreds of dollars' worth of chicken nuggets. Popeyes Popeyes was the first fast food chain to bring AI ordering to UK drive-thrus, rolling it out to its five drive-thru locations last summer. Orders are taken by a robot with a friendly American accent dubbed 'Al', named after the firm's founder Al Copeland, which is trained to understand accents from all around the UK. Al can answer questions from customers such as "what sauces are available?", and is even trained to handle customers changing their mind halfway through their order. It can even recommend meal combos, and explain what's in every Popeyes item. Unlike's McDonald's drive-thru robot mishap, Popeyes said the technology was 97% accurate after a trial at its Northampton drive-thru, with no customer complaints. The fried chicken chain is also looking at other ways it can use AI, including to predict how many orders it expects to have so it can improve efficiency. Domino's 5 Also hopping on the AI bandwagon, Domino's is planning on using the technology to figure out what customers want next, from new pizza flavours to improvements to its service. The pizza chain plans to use cutting-edge Generative AI technology to analyse what its customers are saying about Domino's on social media platform Reddit. It also wants to expand the rollout so it can see what customers are saying on other social media platforms. However, the plans are only for the US, and Domino's said it's not currently planning to implement the technology for UK customers. Starbucks 5 Starbucks has recently introduced a virtual AI assistant to help its baristas while they take orders and make coffees. Employees can use in-store iPads to ask the assistant questions, such as what ingredients are in a new drink on the menu, and it will answer them immediately. Starbucks said the technology would give its staff more time to focus on crafting beverages and connecting with customers, instead of flipping through manuals to search for answers. The scheme, called Green Dot Assist, is being piloted across 35 of its US stores. .

Doner kebab chain accelerates robot push after tax raid
One of Britain's biggest kebab chains is accelerating a rollout of robotic kitchens in an effort to ease labour costs. German Doner Kebab, which runs almost 150 restaurants across the UK, is trialling robotic meat shavers in a handful of sites with plans to roll them out within the next year. The chain has also been installing so-called smart kitchens that require fewer staff, while table service has also been axed to make restaurants more efficient. Simon Wallis, the chief executive, said the company was embracing automation to boost productivity and ease pressures imposed by the Chancellor's employers' National Insurance raid. He added: 'We've said to our franchisees this year that we want to improve their labour productivity by 20pc to get costs down. So we're doing that by remodelling our kitchens. 'That means different formats, it means different equipment. It means that they can serve the product more quickly.' He said the robots were 'a good example of automation in the kitchen that should improve labour productivity', brushing off concerns that their use could reduce the quality of its kebabs. Mr Wallis added: 'In our world, it's quite a skill to shave a skewer – and when you're doing it at pace on a Friday, Saturday night, there's an argument that getting a robot to do it can improve the quality.' 'Tough environment' The move to introduce robots comes after the Chancellor raised employers' National Insurance contributions in last year's Budget, increasing pressure on the hospitality sector as it also battled an increase in the national minimum wage. While supportive of paying staff more, Mr Wallis said higher taxes had meant it was a 'tougher economic environment to do business than we'd like'. The company does not expect increased automation to put off the chain's younger customer base. Mr Wallis said Gen Z customers no longer want to talk to waiters in the same way that previous generations did. He said: 'We used to carry stuff to the table, but we don't think we need to do that any more, because we've got people ordering via self-service.' Founded in 1989, German Doner Kebab opened its first UK site in 2015. It has since embarked on a rapid expansion across the country, bolstered by a major cash injection from its private equity backer True last month. It runs a franchise model rather than operating its own stores. Mr Wallis said: 'We want to do to kebabs and Middle Eastern food what McDonald's did to burgers or KFC did to chicken, or Domino's did to pizza or Subway did to sandwiches.' The business has become known for selling unique dishes such as the 'Doner Kebag' – a large bag of Doritos chips filled with kebab meat and sauces. Mr Wallis said the chain was proving particularly popular with younger, male customers. 'Our primary customer is Gen Z, young males, and we skew a bit more towards Muslim, because we're halal,' he said. It comes amid a wider shift in how younger people socialise in Britain, with many hospitality bosses claiming that Gen Z prefer to socialise in fast food restaurants instead of pubs. Mr Wallis said: 'It's not just enough to go to the pub and have some points of lager any more, because that's not entertainment. Pubs will have a role to play in the community, but so will anything that offers a great experience.' He said the business was exploring ways to improve entertainment at its sites, such as introducing dartboards and hosting DJ sets. He said: 'We've got some really big stores. I want them full of Gen Z.'

Anger as police officer in Sutton Coldfield parks on double yellows to get German Doner Kebab meal
A concerned member of the public recorded the moment a police officer in Sutton Coldfield parked on double yellow lines near a junction while getting a takeaway meal. The police officer is seen parking his patrol car right at the end of Holland Street, at its junction with the Parade where it meets Birmingham Road, in the centre of the town, on Tuesday (June 10) night. He left his vehicle while he went inside German Doner Kebab (GDK). The member of the public, who asked not to be named, said he and fellow customers at the Bottle of Sack pub opposite watched on as the officer parked illegally. Read more: Mum 'looked in eye' by thief as gang stole BMW and Porsche off driveway He said the officer 'left his car on double yellows for six minutes', shortly before 8.30pm. And the pubgoer recorded the moment the officer returned with his GDK bag in hand, returning to the driver's seat, reversing a little before driving off. The concerned witness said: 'Whilst sat having a drink in the Bottle of Sack on Tuesday evening I videoed a police car parking for on double yellow lines for six minutes, whilst the driver went into GDK for a kebab. 'This was also seen by everyone else in the pub." He continued: 'West Midlands Police are asking for the public to upload videos like this on their Operation Snap pages showing driving offences so they can prosecute the driver. 'They even publish the results monthly. This is not setting a good example and a flagrant disregard for the law and other road users. 'It's also annoying that they don't have time to attend burglary or car theft incidents but can park up illegally for six minutes for a kebab.' The force's Operation Snap urges those with footage of anyone committing driving offences on the region's roads to submit it and says every piece of footage will be reviewed by specially-trained staff. The Highway Code says motorists should 'not park within 10 metres of a junction, except in an authorised parking space'. A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: 'We are grateful to have been shared the footage, which will be reviewed and dealt with by supervision.'
