Lorraine Kelly 'left shaking like a leaf' after venture

The Glasgow-born star joined fellow presenter Dan Snow in a race up the 25-metre mast of the RSS Discovery in Dundee on Friday, with Snow reaching the top first by a few minutes. Lorraine Kelly said she was 'shaking like a leaf' as she scaled the mast of a historic ship that previously ventured to Antarctica, before abseiling to the ground. The feat aimed to emulate the working conditions the ship's original crew faced when it voyaged to Antarctica 124 years ago, albeit they endured harsh weather conditions and no modern safety precautions. After reaching the top, both TV stars waved for the cameras below. Snow spoke into the microphone of a camera drone above, with little-to-no fear in his voice. The Cutty Sark in London and the SS Great Britain in Bristol offer a similar challenge. After completing the climb, Kelly said: 'The experience in general was absolutely terrifying, and the only reason I think I got through it was because Dan Snow was doing it as well. 'He looked so calm as he was shimmying up the rigging. 'That made me feel a bit better, but I'm not good with heights, so it was scary. "I was shaking like a leaf, but it's really good to be back on dry land.' (Image: Andrew Milligan/PA) Kelly, a patron of the Dundee Heritage Trust alongside Snow, added: 'The Discovery ship is beautiful, she's the symbol of Dundee. I'm obsessed with all things Antarctica, and she went to Antarctica. 'She's an old girl, so she needs a lot of maintenance, and obviously that costs a lot of money. 'This was all about raising awareness of the Discovery and letting everyone in Dundee have a look at her.' She said the experience also highlighted Scotland's former ties to the whaling industry, which was abolished in Scotland in 1963. It's about looking back on the whaling industry, which was a big part of the city, and looking forward to the fact that we don't do that anymore – thank goodness – and we're trying to save these beautiful animals, so it's a celebration of the future.' Asked if she would consider such a climb again, Kelly joked: 'I don't think I'll ever do anything like that again. I'll leave that to the experts.'

Lorraine Kelly 'shocked' by 'disgraceful' scandal at Dundee University

TV presenter Lorraine Kelly has said she's 'absolutely shocked' by the 'disgraceful' financial scandal at Dundee University. Speaking to STV News on Friday, the 65-year-old Glasgow-born TV star said she's 'heartbroken' and 'really angry' about it as well. 'It's shameful what's happened and what's been allowed to happen,' Kelly said. 'I have been absolutely shocked by the incompetence.' Kelly served as the rector of the University of Dundee about 20 years ago, from 2004 to 2007. It's a role she said she remains very proud of. She added: 'Where was the accountability? It's an absolute disgrace, it really is. And there are a lot of questions still to be asked.' Kelly celebrated her 40th year in television in 2024. She is the host of an STV daytime talk show, Lorraine, which she has presented since 2010. She said issues in Dundee are close to her heart. Kelly said: 'I feel very invested in what's going on, and I'm actually really angry about it as well. Hopefully it's going to get sorted and it won't happen again.' In December, the university announced that hundreds of jobs could be lost due to a £35m blackhole. An investigation published last week found serious concerns over governance and transparency at the highest levels. Led by Professor Pamela Gillies, the review found that the ex-principal and other senior leaders at Dundee University breached ethics rules, ignored financial red flags, and operated in 'isolation of facts'. 'I'm actually really heartbroken about what's happening at Dundee University, especially as it's graduation right now and there are all these bright, hopeful, young people who are going to do wonderful things in the world,' Kelly said. 'To think that might not happen in the future is devastating. 'We have to do everything we can to save the university, to make sure it keeps going, to make sure jobs are retained, and that people can still have the university in the city because the two are so linked.' On Thursday, the university's former principal Professor Iain Gillespie told MSPs he would consider returning a £150,000 payment he received when he stepped down after admitting he had been 'incompetent'. Lewis Capaldi marks return to scene with new single Survive

Released today, the powerful track is the Glasgow-born singer's first since his emotional exit from the stage at Glastonbury 2023, where the crowd famously helped him complete his set. The experience prompted the singer to take an extended break from the limelight — a move he later described to his 1.5 million followers on X as 'the most difficult decision of his life.' READ MORE: Lewis Capaldi enjoys football match with music superstar (Image: Newsquest) Described as 'bold' and 'brutally honest,' Survive opens with the vulnerable line: 'Most nights I fear that I'm not enough, I've had my share of Monday mornings when I can't get up.' The track offers a deeply personal glimpse into Lewis's mental and emotional journey over the past year. It also sees him reunite with close collaborator Romans, who co-wrote his global smash hit Someone You Loved, now certified 10x platinum. The song remains the UK's most-streamed track of all time and the fourth most-streamed globally. The 28-year-old's reemergence follows a string of intimate, low-pressure performances across Scotland in May, held in partnership with mental health charity CALM during Mental Health Awareness Week. These low-pressure performances were designed to help him test his comfort and readiness to return to music full-time, and were hailed by fans as a 'triumph.' In April 2023, the singer shared his behind-the-scenes struggles with the release of his candid, Grammy-nominated Netflix documentary, Lewis Capaldi: How I'm Feeling Now. The film soared to the top of Netflix's global charts, becoming the platform's most-watched release at the time. With eight UK Top 10 singles, five number ones, and over 30 billion streams worldwide, the global popstar has solidified his status as one of Britain's most successful and beloved artists. Fans have been buzzing with speculation that the beloved singer may be planning a surprise return to Glastonbury this weekend. READ MORE: Lewis Capaldi fans speculate star plans Glastonbury surprise The Glasgow Times reported that festival goers believe they've uncovered clues pointing to a secret set at the legendary festival. A mysterious billboard appeared in St Enoch Square, Glasgow, displaying the cryptic message: 'I refuse to spend my best years rotting in the sun.' The red text on a white background also included a phone number for fans to sign up for updates, prompting widespread speculation that Capaldi is the unnamed "TBA" artist set to perform on the Pyramid Stage.

Shankland talks continue

Hearts boss Derek McInnes wants striker Lawrence Shankland on the plane to Spain when the squad jets out later this week for their pre-season training camp. The new head coach hopes to find a way of keeping the Glasgow-born player at the Gorgie club and McInnes believes the 29-year-old can score over 25 goals a season for the club. He told a media briefing that he was still talking to Shankland (pictured) who is out of contract but re-signing and scoring goals for the Jambos could keep the club's captain of last season in the Scotland squad. McInnes said: 'We think we're a really strong option. There is a brilliant project going on here and, hopefully, Lawrence is part of it. ' Meanwhile, 42-year-old goalkeeper, Craig Gordon, may not be fit for the start of the William Hill Premiership season due to a shoulder injury. The club's League Cup campaign starts on July 12 with a home game against Dunfermline Athletic but the Scotland international will not be fit for that game according to McInnes. Love Island fans ‘calling the police' as Islander goes missing saying ‘has she secretly gone home?'

It comes amid fans predicted doom for the Glasgow-born star ALARMING Love Island fans 'calling the police' as Islander goes missing saying 'has she secretly gone home?' Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) LOVE Island fans say they're "calling the police" as Alima went missing again. It came as Harry tried to graft Shakira last night, Toni and Shakira cleared the air with Emily, and Megan revealed she wasn't sexually attracted to Tommy. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 3 Alima's absence has caused alarm among Love Island viewers Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 3 She was previously called a 'background character' Credit: Eroteme But as all the drama unfolded, original girl Alima was nowhere to be seen. She was only mentioned when Shea branded her "boring" in a challenge, when asked to describe each islander with one word. Fans have been up in arms over Alima's poor edit. One said: "I would like to report a missing person. Her name is Alima and if you do see her let us know." Another wanted to know: "Does Alima even enjoy her time in the villa? I feel like that villa is so toxic and that's why she's always missing from group settings and just vibing alone w her mans." Another raised the alarm, writing: "MISSING ALERT Alima's been missing from our screens! If she returns please contact me!" And a fourth said: "Is it just me or have these two been properly stitched up in the edits? Barely seen them the last 3 or 4 eps…I think one of those two are definitely out next." Fans previously called Alima a "supporting character" in the villa. Alima is coupled up with 24-year-old bombshell Remell Mullings. Despite recent tensions, a U-turn saw them share a passionate kiss. However, show alums Amy Hart and Indiyah Polack had earlier predicted things could go awry for the couple. Love Island hosts predict doom for couple claiming villa boy is stringing girl along after her surprise U-turn Speaking on their Love Island: Morning After podcast, Amy said: "Thing is as well, with Remell and Alima, most people can count, right? "You go in the villa and there's more boys than girls. Which means that boys will be at risk. "So, I need to find a girl - and I'm not saying that Alima was an easy option. "She's a beautiful girl with a beautiful heart and she's amazing." Continuing, Amy remarked how Remell "didn't even speak to anyone else" and observed her bond with Blu wasn't the strongest. She added: "He saw her and was like, 'That's my target' and then now he's wanting to kiss people in the challenge. "I just think, on paper, it looks like Remell came straight in for Alima, went for her and now they're in a couple. "Whereas it's not all those things." The villa couple previously butted heads when Remell kissed anyone but his partner in a challenge. Alima told him: 'I think you were so disrespectful, I'm not gonna lie…do you feel like you did everything right?' Their conversation continued, as Alima added: 'You say you like me and do things that just don't match, it's worse you can't even take accountability…maybe we're not compatible…"
