Elio is an intergalactic adventure about love and friendship
You've got to hand it to the folks at Disney when it comes to spreading love and positivity through storytelling. From classic fairytales to newly crafted originals, they just know what and how to do it. Joining this collection of feel-good stories is their latest offering called Elio. Produced in collaboration with animation experts Pixar, the animated feature is yet another modern tale filled with lessons for today's generation of kids and even adults. The film depicts the life of Elio Solis, a young orphan boy who lost his parents due to an accident and is raised by his aunt Olga, who is an Air Force major who gave up her dream of becoming an astronaut to raise and care for her nephew. Photo: Disney Unfortunately, after the death of his parents, young Elio feels lost and has problems fitting in with the rest of his peers. He then develops an obsession for extraterrestrial contact with hopes that 'aliens' would abduct him and that he can escape his current plight of loneliness on Earth. This obsession leads him to countless attempts of creating contraptions that may realise his dream of establishing contacts with visitors of the outer world. One day while following his aunt to her Air Force base workplace, Elio hears of news that some form of vague contact was made with beings from outer space but no one takes heed and ignores the incident. Convinced that the incident was real, Elio secretly responds to the signal without the knowledge of the people at the base. Unknowingly, the signal reaches its source to an intergalactic council of extraterrestrials. They then respond by tracking Elio's location and message by coming to planet Earth and abducting him as Elio intended. Elio who is overjoyed by the abduction is then introduced to the intergalactic council and is given the welcome he had always dreamed of. Extremely happy to have his dream come true, he then makes friends with another young alien being named Glordon, a prince from another planet who is expected to live up to his father's expectations, King Grigon who is not well accepted by the council due to his warmongering intentions and violent nature. Elio and Glordon however, create a special friendship bond making them inseparable friends. However, King Grigon warns the council that if they do not let him join the council, he would wage war on the council and all the membering planets. Bent on staying in outer space and refusing to go back to Earth, Elio volunteers to negotiate with Grigon by using his son Glordon as bait. While Elio is stuck on the other end of the galaxy, a clone version of himself is sent to Earth to ensure that no one suspects his disappearance and this is when everything slowly unravels. Photo: Disney The plot of the film is cleverly crafted to suit today's set of viewers as the message behind the tale is well highlighted. Sharing the real plight of young people who get bullied and ostracised with parents and guardians who do not understand what they are going through is nothing new, but the film gives a stark reminder of today's reality. It reminds us that not everyone can fit into one general box and that different people just need different kinds of surroundings and attention. It also shows that love works both ways and like everything in life, requires some form of effort from everyone involved. This makes Elio a wholesome movie perfect for the whole family who can appreciate a good laugh and some wild imagination. Elio is currently screening in all cinemas across Malaysia since June 19, 2025.

‘Elio' Has a Bizarre Post-Credits Scene That's Not About ‘Elio' at All
If you forgot to stick around for the post-credits scenes tacked onto the end of Elio, this past weekend's Pixar release teased two things. And if you haven't seen it—what are you doing here? Kidding, we welcome the curious as we break down the unexpected scenes between the potential Elio spin-off Easter egg and a glimpse of Hoppers, Pixar's next original concept we see Elio and his new friend, Bryce, reconnect with Glordon using their prototypical intergalactic radio, leaving things open for more adorable sci-fi adventures. Unfortunately, the film has been underperforming, but we hope it gets legs as the run continues in theaters and eventually at home, so we get more stories in Elio's universe. We miss Glordon and need to see the trio in more space travel hijinks. The next post-credits glimpse previews Hoppers, totally out of the blue for the studio which doesn't usually do sizzle scenes like that. We'd much rather have the short films that used to screen in front of Pixar releases back! Hoppers, due out next year, is another original Pixar IP, which might also be affected by how Elio and Pixar's other non-sequel movies have been doing. In the tease we see a big-eyed lizard sitting atop a phone pressing the lizard emoji in a text over and over again. The head-scratcher of a clip is unsettling and funny, but maybe not enough to get the hype it's aiming for. All we know so far about Hoppers is that scientists have figured out how to transfer human consciousness into lifelike animal robots to communicate with other species. Think Avatar but with wildlife, a high-concept idea we're definitely intrigued by. Alas, the internet's loud demand for original movies still isn't paying off with ticket sales, at least not in this case, so who knows what the future of Pixar originals will look like. Elio deserves a shot and it's such a bummer the film is having challenges drawing crowds to the cinemas. Meanwhile, Disney has begun to pivot back to properties with proven track records; as just one example, Toy Story 5 is due out next summer. Want more io9 news? A lonely boy's space odyssey in Pixar's ‘Elio'
LOS ANGELES, June 22, (AP): Elio is a lonely 11-year-old just looking for big answers about life. He's recently lost his parents, the only people who understood him and wanted him, and the one thing that seems to give him comfort and hope is the idea that we're not alone in the universe. So, in Pixar's latest, he starts waging a campaign for aliens to abduct him. Mostly, this involves laying down on the beach and waiting, his sand notes getting ever more desperate. Then one day it works. It's a solid premise that, viewed one way, has all the makings of a classic Pixar film. It's existential but cute. It might make you cry and also want to buy a cuddly Glordon toy. Glordon (Remy Edgerly) is the toothy, sluglike young alien with no eyes who befriends Elio (Yonas Kibreab). From a more cynical vantage point, however, it also doesn't stray far from the formula. It's another kid realizing that the things that make him different might just be his secret power played out on a heightened, fantastical scale. It's safe and familiar, but also perhaps getting a little tired. 'Elio' might even be the film that will have you wishing that Pixar would tone down the selfhelp sessions. Dead parents and a kid with a single tear running down his face is a brutal way to start an intergalactic adventure movie for the whole family. We've cared about protagonists with far less immediate trauma. Elio and his aunt Olga (Zoe Saldaña) are barely holding on when we meet them living on an army base. She's had to abandon her dreams of being an astronaut to be Elio's primary caregiver, and he is a tricky subject - consumed with grief that he can't quite verbalize and channeling all of his energies into a quest to communicate with extraterrestrials. Olga is trying but overwhelmed and Elio feels like a burden. On top of it all, he can't seem to stay out of trouble, whether it's his own making or in self-defense against a local bully. It's no wonder he wants to fl ee for a world of infinite knowledge, voice powered anti-gravity devices and spectacular colors. But life in the cosmos is no walk in the park either. Elio gets immediately entangled in a web of lies, in which he convinces the (we're told) wise aliens of the Communiverse that he is the leader of Earth. Fake it until you make it, Pixarstyle? He's sent to negotiate with Lord Grigon (Brad Garrett), a warmongering leader who wants to lead the Communiverse, and learns techniques like 'start from a position of power' and to use a 'bargaining chip.' Like most Pixar movies, it's building towards a message of empathy. But for a good long while it we're also being taught something akin to the art of the deal. 'Elio' is the work of many people - there are three credited directors, Adrian Molina ( 'Coco' ), who left the project but retains the credit, Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi ('Turning Red'), and three credited screenwriters involved. And the story stretches in a lot of different directions, making the overall experience a little disjointed and strained. It's most fun when it lets its kid characters be kids - Elio and his new pal Glordon have a ball just playing around in the Communiverse. But the film just takes so long to get there. Dazzling visuals will only get you so far. And those are not without their pleasures and irreverent homages to film tropes in various genres. One of the more questionably intense sequences involves a bit of clone body horror, but perhaps that's an adult projecting a horror element onto something that a kid might just find funny. There's a nice overriding message about parental acceptance and unconditional love - there always is. But in playing it so safe and so familiar, 'Elio' is missing a bit of that Pixar wonder, and mischief. 'Elio,' a Walt Disney Company released in theaters Friday, is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association for 'thematic elements, some action and peril.' Running time. 99 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.

The Ending of 'Elio' Explained
If you haven't seen Disney and Pixar's latest movie, Elio, then you need to hop in a spaceship and zip on down to the theatre because it is the cutest thing you'll see all year. It's about Elio, an orphaned kid who's obsessed with space and aliens, and more than anything, wants to be abducted and taken away from Earth where he feels like he isn't wanted. Well, his wishes come true after he messes with a satellite message at the Air Force base his aunt works at and aliens send a ship to come get him, mistakenly thinking he's the leader of Earth. He's zipped through space to the Communiverse, a place where advanced species of the universe come together. In exchange for a permanent spot in the Communiverse, Elio volunteers to deal with the scary Lord Grigon, who's threatening to destroy the Communiverse after not being admitted. That decision ends up sending Elio, and Grigon's son Glordon, on a wild adventure. So how does it all end? Let's get into it! After Elio's negotiations with Lord Grigon take a sharp turn for the worse, he gets thrown into a jail cell. But pretty quickly, he manages to climb out a broken window. On his escape, he meets Glordon, the son of Grigon. The two bond and it seems like for the first time, Elio might actually be making a friend. He tells Glordon he needs a bargaining chip against Grigon, and Glordon, who's also never had a friend before, agrees to go with Elio and pretend he's being held hostage. The two go back to the Communiverse where they video call Grigon and Elio threatens (but not really) to hurt his son if he doesn't leave the Communiverse alone. Glordon, not really wanting to go back with his dad since he has zero desire to be a weapon-wielding machine like Grigon is, has Elio create a clone of himself to send back in his place. But Grigon figures it out pretty quickly and goes ballistic, locking up all the Communiverse ambassadors as he searches for his real son. It might take the Communiverse a little longer than you'd think for what are supposed to be the smartest aliens around to figure out that a literal child is not the leader of Earth, but they eventually get there. Grigon makes Ambassador Questa read Elio's mind to find out where the real Glordon is and by doing so, she sees the whole truth, including who he really is. As Grigons soldiers take over the Communiverse, Elio gets knocked through a portal back to Earth. Elio's Aunt Olga might seem kinda excited about the clone version of Elio that's been sent to Earth so that no one gets suspicious that he's missing. This Elio is being chatty, helpful, and has stopped being so obsessed with aliens and space–all the things she's wanted him to be. But Olga is no dummy. She secretly plucks one of clone Elio's hairs and takes it to investigate under a microscope, clearly suspicious of his change in behavior. She's also surrounded by books on alien abductions, so yeah, she knows what's going on. Her suspicions are confirmed when the strand of hair comes to life and busts its way out of the microscope slide and crawls back down the hall to the rest of Elio's clone. She follows it and lifts up Elio's eyepatch to see there's no actual eye behind it, so this can't be her real nephew. Yes! But he's not in the best condition when he arrives. The real Elio, now reunited with Olga after getting kicked out of the Communiverse, sees some commotion going on at the Air Force base. The two of them take a closer look and see the spaceship Glordon was in is being hauled inside a warehouse. They break in, and seeing that Glordon is fading away (he's freezing cold now that he's out of his usual climate), start the ship back up and fly into outer space. Thankfully, also yes! With an unexpected assist, that is... After dodging dangerous debris fields and zooming through at warp speed, Elio, Olga, and Glordon make it to the Communiverse, which has been taken over by Grigon. At this point, Glordon is unresponsive and Grigon, seeing his son's state, shockingly rips off his suit of armor, sacrificing his honor, so that he can climb down and save his son. When Glordon wakes back up, he tells his dad he doesn't want to be a killing machine trapped in armor like him. Grigon says that even though he doesn't understand Glordon, he'll always love him. He apologizes to Elio and tells his cronies to release all the people of the Communiverse. Having saved the day after all, Elio is finally offered a permanent place in the Communiverse. But his initial excitement is stopped when he sees his aunt's heartbroken face at the thought of him staying in space. Elio tells the Communiverse ambassadors that he wants to give Earth another chance and that this isn't goodbye, it's not yet. Elio is all about feeling like an outsider and searching for acceptance. On that acceptance journey, Elio, who at the beginning of the movie shuts out his aunt and other kids, learns to connect with someone else thanks to Glordon. Elio feels like his aunt doesn't really want him and he sees that Glordon shares his same fears, but with his dad. By the end of the movie, Elio learns that his aunt loves him and would even jump in a dinky-looking spaceship for him, and Glordon realizes his dad will love him no matter what he wants to do with his life. Ambassador Questa sums it up nicely towards the end, telling Elio, "Unique can sometimes feel like alone, but you're not alone." And now we're crying again!

Disney and Pixar's Elio is bringing a wave of cosmic fun to Disney Parks across the globe in celebration of the film's theatrical release. From themed treats and dance parties to immersive photo ops and exclusive merchandise, guests can join Earth's newest ambassador on a truly intergalactic adventure—no rocket ship required. Walt Disney World Resort At EPCOT, Elio beamed Spaceship Earth straight into the Communiverse with a digital stunt that kicked off the festivities. Over in Tomorrowland, guests can join the Galactic Blast DJ dance party and explore Elio's Guide to an Intergalactic Adventure , a themed takeover of Merchant of Venus filled with film backdrops and photo ops. Don't miss the Elio Float at Auntie Gravity's: a purple Sprite float topped with vanilla soft-serve, fruit boba, star sprinkles, and sour straws, available through September 1. Disneyland Resort Pixar Place Hotel is showcasing the Art of Pixar Gallery featuring Elio , with concept art, sculptures, and a fun photo location. Visitors can also spot life-sized sculptures of Glordon and other alien characters throughout the space. Disneyland Paris At Disneyland Paris, Elio takes over Discoveryland with an animated Magic Shot and drawing sessions at Animation Academy. Six collectible character cards are also up for grabs, and surprise water art drawings of Elio and Glordon appear across the park. Shanghai Disney Resort Shanghai guests can enjoy themed paper goods at Stargazer Grill in Tomorrowland, featuring characters from Elio .
