T-Mobile locks in launch window for U.S. satellite
T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert recently announced that the company's T-Satellite service is expected to launch nationwide on 23 July. Mike Katz, president of marketing, strategy and products, said the T-Satellite service provisioned by Starlink will officially launch next month to provide service across more than 500,000 square miles that are not connected by traditional cell towers. 'We have 657 [Starlink] satellites in orbit supporting real customers with this service today', Katz said. 'We're also the first and only mobile provider that has a cellular-to-satellite service that allows you to automatically connect without doing anything'. Katz explained 75 per cent of the phones used by T-Mobile customers will work on the satellite service. 'Pretty much any phone that was manufactured over the last four years works on T-Satellite,' he said. T-Mobile is wrapping up its beta test of the satellite service with more than 1.8 million users, including hundreds of thousands of customers from AT&T and Verizon. Verizon and AT&T customers need eSIM-capable and unlocked phones to access the service, but they don't need to switch to T-Mobile During the beta, more than a million messages were sent from remote areas of the US without traditional cellular service. 'One of the things that we've seen during the beta is customers send many more messages than they send,' Katz said. 'In fact, three times more.' The satellite service will be included at no additional cost for subscribers of its Go5G Next and Experience Beyond plans while everyone else, including AT&T and Verizon customers, will pay $10 per month. The service will support SMS for both Android and iOS devices as well as picture messaging and short audio clips. On 1 October, a data service will go live. On the same date in October, Katz said the operator will also be 'making 911 texting available to all customers on all networks, as long as they have a compatible phone'. 'Also, today we're announcing we are welcoming any developer who wants to optimise their app and bring it to our customers on our satellite network can do so,' Katz said. 'The SDKs are available from Google, the APIs are available from Apple, and open to app developers today.' In addition to Apple and Google, T-Mobile is working with AccuWeather, AllTrails, WhatsApp and X on developing satellite-enabled apps. Source: Mobile World Live Image Credit: Stock Image/T-Mobile

T-Mobile CEO talks cellphone pricing, new Starlink service
T-Mobile (TMUS) is rolling out satellite coverage nationwide on July 23. T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert speaks with Yahoo Finance Executive Editor Brian Sozzi to address rumors that he's stepping down early, explain how the new T-Satellite service aims to end dead zones for just $10 a month, and discuss the outlook for cellphone costs. To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Opening Bid here. For today's Power Play, I had the chance to sit down with T-Mobile CEO and Starbucks board member Mike Sievert. Here's what stood out to me. First, Sievert pushed back on a recent report that he would be leaving the CEO role early, plus T-Mobile confirmed the launch date of its new Starlink satellite service called, uh, appropriately T-Satellite. Here's what he had to say. That report was a bit overblown. And so they got a lot of things about it wrong, including the idea that anybody's made any decisions about leaving anytime soon. But they didn't get wrong one thing, which is yes, we did recruit Srini with the idea of succession planning in mind. And I would tell you that any business should be thinking about these things. That's not bad news, that's good news. You know, every big move I make in the people arena is about making sure that the secret sauce of this company is here for the long run and will outlive any of us. And bringing Srini on was a part of that story. He is a fantastic leader that turned around a major German operation as CEO, and he's already adding great value here. But that is not to say that there's been any decision by me or anyone else about me stepping away anytime soon. T-Satellite news, uh, it's supposed to launch commercially July 23rd. What is this service? What will it let you do? Well, it's the largest satellite to cellular network in the world. And we've been talking about this future for almost three years now when we first unveiled it from Starbase in Texas in August of 2022. Back then it was a tech alliance that we had a dream of inventing a technology that meant one simple thing. If you can see the sky, you're connected. This is the end of dead zones. And you know there's 500,000 square miles in this country that are not reached by any cellular network, not AT&T, not Verizon. And so now, you know, this is about bringing that service to the American public and we're opening the doors to everyone. T-Mobile customers get it for free on some plans, but anybody, T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon doesn't matter. Anybody can have it for just $10 a month. It's built in to our um experience beyond plan, which is our in our most popular line of plans to Go 5G next, our previous flagship plan. And for everyone else, it's just 10 bucks a month. And think about the peace of mind of being reachable because, you know, the way this works is it works with the phone you already have by and large. Um and it connects automatically. This is very different from anything that's come before. So you don't know if you've fallen off the terrestrial network and it won't matter because your phone will automatically connect to the satellite without you doing a video game of trying to connect. And that way you're reachable. And we found in the beta with over a million users that over two-thirds of the messages were actually inbound messages from others trying to reach you when you're out in the wild. Recently Mike, uh, T-Mobile, um, launched a five-year price lock, um, for its its phone plans. Definitely I think, uh, surprised a few folks in industry, uh, shook up in the industry. What have been some of your learnings since the launch? Well, you know, people are concerned and there's a lot of uncertainty out there in the world. Prices are up in everything, they're up in telecom as well. Um, and they want some assurance from the value leader, which is T-Mobile, that we're going to have their back. And value comes in multiple forms. You know, one form is the price you pay. And now the price you pay won't change for five years. Why are phone plans so high? Well, I I I would say it the other way, which is, why haven't they risen? In real dollars, you pay the same amount now you did in 2019 for phone service on average, but you're consuming, uh, three times more data at four times the speed. That's the 5G dividend. The American consumer, not T-Mobile customers, the American consumer is consuming three times more data at four times the speed for the same price in real dollars. Name another industry that's delivering that kind of value. T-Mobile users have until today to ensure they pay the advertised price only
It was reported a few days back that T-Mobile had made it almost impossible for customers to activate Go5G plans and that the company was phasing out tax-included watch and tablet plans. Customers who wish to add lines with taxes and other fees included apparently have until today or, at most, tomorrow to do so. The Mobile Report has reiterated that T-Mobile is removing tax-inclusive versions of almost all the introduction of the ONE plan in 2017, most plans included taxes and other fees in their pricing. That changed with the new Experience More and Experience Beyond plans that were announced in April. Except for home internet plans, all T-Mobile plans will be tax-exclusive from now on. This includes smartwatches, hotspots, and other "BTS" lines (beyond the smartphone) lines. Existing tax-included plans will be grandfathered in, meaning if you have already activated a tax-inclusive plan, nothing will change for you. However, any new lines you add will be tax-exclusive. T-Mobile no longer follows this philosophy Similarly, if your home internet line is tax-exclusive, that will continue to be the case, unless you change your today's report, the change for non-voice lines will either take effect today or tomorrow. Either way, if you have been thinking about adding a new line and don't want taxes to be tacked on separately, you should act fast. Otherwise, taxes and fees excluded versions will be your only option, and you might not like that as these tend to fluctuate. As for Go5G plans, they have vanished from T-Mobile 's website and systems, though customer care might still be able to activate them for you. We are guessing that they will be removed completely alongside tax-inclusive non-voice lines. Even though T-Mobile 's new Experience plans come with a five-year price lock, that guarantee doesn't extend to taxes and fees. We've reached out to T-Mobile for a comment and will update the story when we have a response. Switch to Total 5G+ Unlimited 3-Month plan or Total 5G Unlimited and get a free iPhone. T-Mobile customers can kiss goodbye a beloved offer
T-Mobile (TMUS) , one of the largest phone carriers in the U.S., has recently made significant change to its wireless plan selection, which has frustrated some customers. Last year, T-Mobile hiked the prices for its older phone plans (One, Magenta, Simple Choice, and Go5G 55) by $2 or $5 per line. Then, in April, it issued another price increase for some of its legacy plans, raising monthly prices by $5. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter T-Mobile later raised eyebrows when it introduced its new Experience More and Experience Beyond phone plans, which are essentially upgraded versions of its Go5G Plus or Go5G Next plans with five-year price guarantees. However, this move raised suspicions that Go5G plans were on the chopping block. Related: T-Mobile CEO has a harsh warning for customers While the newer plans came with upgraded perks, customers sounded alarm bells around the fact that taxes and fees are not included in their pricing. T-Mobile later confirmed that Go5G plans will be available for a limited time and removed them from its list of plans on its website in April, instructing customers to call or chat with customer service if they want to sign up for those plans. Image source:Now, it appears that T-Mobile has officially retired its Go5G plans and is ushering in a new era of excluding taxes and fees from its prices. According to a new Reddit post, a Redditor who claims to be a T-Mobile employee said that Go5G plans were grandfathered last week. This means that while existing customers are allowed to stay on those plans, new customers will not be able to sign up for them. "As of yesterday 6/13 Go5G has been removed from our systems and it's officially grandfathered the same way Magenta is now," wrote the T-Mobile employee. "It lingered for about a month and a half but now it's officially gone." They also claimed that T-Mobile plans to remove taxes and fees from watch and tablet plans very soon. Related: T-Mobile makes bold move to reverse startling customer behavior "T-Mobile is also phasing out of taxes include mobile internet lines like watches and tablets starting 6/18 and they are only offering taxes excluded and are even allowing mixed taxed plans to achieve this," wrote the employee. "So someone on Go5G or Magenta can still add watches or tablets but it will be taxes and fees exclude variants." In the comment section under the post, some consumers expressed disappointment with the recent changes. "It's kinda sad. The tax-included plans were one of the best parts about T-Mobile," wrote one Reddit user. "So it's not worth switching to T-Mobile anymore? They just have the high priced plans it seems now," wrote another redditor. T-Mobile did not immediately respond to TheStreet's request for comment. The move from T-Mobile comes at a time when some of its customers are hesitant to switch to newer phone plans due to customer service warning them that doing so may cause them to lose their current discounts and promos, and because the newer plans omit taxes and fees. The change also comes after T-Mobile welcomed 495,000 new postpaid phone customers during the first quarter of the year, which is 6% lower than the amount it welcomed during the same time period last year. Regardless, the company generated a net income of $3 billion, which is 24% higher than what it earned during the same quarter in 2024. More Retail: Costco quietly plans to offer a convenient service for customersT-Mobile pulls the plug on generous offer, angering customersAT&T makes generous offer to older customers During an earnings call in April, T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert said that the company recently saw a steeper loss of customers (churn) during the quarter, mainly due to concerns about the economy. "So overall, you saw across the industry churn was just on the margin a little elevated, and I think there's a number of dynamics there," said Sievert during the call. "That probably has more to do with kind of macro questions than with competition. You know, I think there's a certain element out there where people are in a time of uncertainty about the future, grabbing what they can afford now. And so, you're seeing kind of some amount of probably move forward of upgrades and switching." T-Mobile delists Go5G plans from its retail system and introduces bizarre new policy
T-Mobile's Experience More and Experience Beyond plans introduced in April were expected to replace Go5G plans from the get-go and the inevitable has now happened. T-Mobile claims that its new plans provide more value, but that statement might be a little misleading, considering unlike Go5G plans, the Experience plans don't include taxes and fees. In late April, shortly after the new plans were announced, it was reported that T-Mobile was discouraging employees from activating Go5G plans for customers. The company didn't deny the rumor and only reiterated that the plans would remain available for a limited time. In May, Go5G plans were removed from the company's website but it mentioned other ways to sign up for them, such as calling T-Mobile or placing an order via chat. And now, the plans have also vanished from T-Mobile 's systems. In essence, the plans have been grandfathered, which means that while people already on Go5G will be able to keep plans, others won't be able to sign up for them. —SettleAsRobin, Reddit user, June 2025 Apparently, you might still be able to activate Go5G plans through customer care staff, but the retail staff has lost access to them. Additionally, T-Mobile is also retiring watch and tablet plans with included taxes and fees. From June 18, the company will only offer taxes and fees-excluded versions of these plans. Unlike before, you will be able to mix tax and untaxed plans. This means that even if you are on an old, tax-included plan, your new lines will be tax-included. This might result in some billing confusion, but that's just the way things are now. With Go5G plans all but gone, T-Mobile has moved away from its "What You See Should Be What You Pay" slogan of 2017. The company appears to be reinventing itself as a premium brand.
