Iconic '80s Rocker Going Viral With 'God Only Knows' in Memory of Brian Wilson

Iconic '80s Rocker Going Viral With 'God Only Knows' in Memory of Brian Wilson originally appeared on Parade. A legendary British rocker is going viral with his new, stripped-down recording of God Only Knows as a tribute to the late, great . Howard Jones, 70, the British singer/songwriter with a very distinct voice, was, like many, many other artists, quick to express their admiration, love and grief over Wilson's passing on June 12. "I loved the music of Brian Wilson and was so happy to meet him backstage at a gig in Brooklyn. I was able to say to him what a profound influence he was on my musical life. Thank you, Brian, you will always be in my heart," wrote Jones on Facebook. He then posted a video of himself at the piano playing a gorgeous, stripped-down version of "God Only Knows" in memory of Wilson, captioning the video, "Perhaps the best pop song ever written." In the comments on the Facebook video, one fan wrote, "Howard Jones, your cover of 'God Only Knows' is a beautiful tribute to Brian Wilson."Another fan wrote, "A really exquisite tribute. He'd love it, and clearly you're really connected to the emotion of this song." "Just 20 seconds in and feeling the vibe, and that moment the hair stands up on the back of your neck… pure class….👏👏👏," wrote a third fan. Jones is the voice behind such hits as "New Song," "What is Love?", Pearl in the Shell," "Like to Get to Know You Well," and "Things Can Only Get Better," but perhaps his greatest hit was the 1986 single "No One is to Blame," which peaked at No. 4 in the U.S. — personally, we find it to be his most beautiful song lyrically and melodically. Wilson was a founding member of the Beach Boys and was responsible for writing some of their greatest hits like "Good Vibrations," "God Only Knows," "Wouldn't It Be Nice," among hundreds of other songs. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 Iconic '80s Rocker Going Viral With 'God Only Knows' in Memory of Brian Wilson first appeared on Parade on Jun 15, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jun 15, 2025, where it first appeared.

Brian Wilson's Cause of Death Revealed: Respiratory Arrest, Sepsis, and Chronic Health Issues

The legendary musician's cause of death revealed Brian Wilson, the visionary behind The Beach Boys' iconic sound, passed away at the age of 82 on June 11, 2025, in his Beverly Hills home. The official cause of death, as confirmed by a death certificate obtained by USA TODAY on June 30, was due to respiratory arrest, which occurs when a person stops breathing. The music icon, known for his timeless contributions to surf rock, had reportedly experienced several minutes of respiratory distress that morning. Additional contributing factors to his death included sepsis, a serious infection-triggered bodily response, cystitis (a bladder infection), and several chronic health conditions, including neurodegenerative disorder, obstructive sleep apnea, chronic respiratory failure, and chronic kidney disease. Wilson, whose innovative music continues to resonate worldwide, was cremated and laid to rest in a cemetery in Westwood, near UCLA. A Legacy of Timeless Music Brian Wilson's legacy is immortalized through some of the most influential songs in music history, including 'Good Vibrations,' 'God Only Knows,' and 'Wouldn't It Be Nice.' His work with The Beach Boys redefined the sound of Southern California in the 1960s and has influenced generations of artists. A Family's Heartfelt Tribute On the day of his death, Wilson's family announced the news on social media with a heartfelt message that read, 'We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away. We are at a loss for words right now. Please respect our privacy at this time as our family is grieving. We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world. Love & Mercy.' Wilson is survived by his daughters, Carnie and Wendy Wilson, who became well-known as part of the group Wilson Phillips. Carnie paid tribute to her father on Instagram, writing, 'I am lucky to have been his daughter and had a soul connection with him that will live on always. I've never felt this kind of pain before, but I know he's resting up there in heaven … or maybe playing the piano for Grandma Audree, his Mom.' Life Under Conservatorship Prior to his death, Wilson had been under a conservatorship, which was established in 2024 due to his ongoing battle with dementia. The petition filed by his longtime manager and publicist stated that Wilson was unable to care for his physical health and personal needs without assistance. Wilson's wife, Melinda Ledbetter, passed away earlier this year in January 2024, further deepening the musician's challenges in his final years. As fans and family mourn his passing, Brian Wilson's influence on music remains undeniable, and his artistic contributions will continue to inspire for years to come.

But at one stage, Lucie, who previously represented the UK in Eurovision, was head over heels for him. Speaking about her ex, who works as the private client director for luxury brand Moët Hennessy, she said: "Ethan is everything I could ever have wanted in a man. I count my lucky stars I found him every single day. "As soon as I saw Ethan, looking so dashing in his blue wedding suit, I started to well up. "Then the male voice choir started to sing our song, God Only Knows, by The Beach Boys, and an overwhelming feeling of intense emotion came over me. "Suddenly, every precious memory of our time together came flooding back and I couldn't stop the tears. I felt so elated and knew that marrying him was the best thing I would ever do." Chicago-born Ethan added: "It was incredible seeing her in her wedding dress for the first time. I couldn't take my eyes off her." The pair reconnected after first meeting at boot camp during the filming of The X Factor 15 years ago, after which Lucie made it into the final 12. They stayed in touch when Ethan moved back to his native Chicago before going out on their first date five years later. 6 Lucie, pictured at the Pyramid Stage, performed in The Astrolabe tent Credit: Instagram 6 Lucie with ex-husband Ethan Credit: Getty

The Beach Boys Chart A Debut Rock Hit In America

The Beach Boys debut on Billboard's Hot Rock Songs and Hot Rock & Alternative Songs charts with 'God ... More Only Knows,' which also holds at No. 2 on the Rock Digital Song Sales list. Clockwise from left, the Beach Boys are Al Jardine, Mike Love, Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson, and Carl Wilson. Since the beginning, the music of the Beach Boys has been classified as both pop and rock, depending on different sources and, of course, different songs. Because the group is made up of musicians playing instruments like guitar, bass, and drums, the outfit was originally labeled under the rock genre, but more recently, its output is often seen through the lens of pop. When it comes to the Billboard charts, the primary pop rankings are focused on radio play, while there are other lists under the rock and alternative categories that center on streaming activity, sales, and general consumption. It's on those tallies where the group earns a special honor this week. "God Only Knows" Debuts on Multiple Charts "God Only Knows" debuts on a pair of Billboard rankings this frame. The tune opens at No. 17 on the Hot Rock Songs chart and No. 21 on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs tally. Both of those lists are general consumption rosters, as they blend sales, streams, and airplay to showcase what titles in those styles Americans are listening to. A First Rock Hit for the Beach Boys While the Beach Boys have been called a rock band for many years, at least in some circles, "God Only Knows" earns the group its first hit on both the Hot Rock Songs and Hot Rock & Alternative Songs charts. Those tallies didn't exist until long after the Beach Boys produced most of the biggest hits in the group's catalog. It's only now, after the passing of the mastermind behind the outfit, Brian Wilson, that the musicians land a debut placement on these rankings. 'Good Vibrations,' "Sloop John B" and "I Get Around" Sell Well The Beach Boys fare much better on another style-specific ranking, the Rock Digital Song Sales chart. On that tally, "God Only Knows" keeps at its No. 2 high point. At the same time, "Good Vibrations" and "Sloop John B" rise to new peaks after debuting just last frame. Those beloved cuts lift to Nos. 4 and 9, respectively. "I Get Around" earns the group a fifth career placement, as it opens at No. 8.
