‘Squid Game' and Diego Luna are the year's biggest Emmy snubs: Poll

Hell hath no fury like a TV fan scorned. Following the announcement of the 2025 Emmy nominations, Gold Derby users were outraged that several top contenders failed to hear their names called. Nearly half of the people we polled said that Squid Game was the biggest snub, having received zero bids for Season 2 after winning six trophies for Season 1 in 2022. More from Gold Derby Snubbed by Oscars, redeemed by Emmys: How eligibility rules revived 'Super/Man,' 'I Am: Celine Dion,' and 'Will & Harper' Instant Emmy prediction data shows 'The Studio' and 'Severance' out to early leads, with 'Hacks' and 'The Pitt' lurking Among the list of snubbed Squid Game actors: Lee Jung-jae, who won the last time he was eligible for playing Seong Gi-hun (Player 456); Choi Seung-hyun as the villainous Thanos (Player 230); Lee Byung-hun as the Front Man; Park Sung-hoon as trans contestant Cho Hyun-ju (Player 120); Kang Ae-shim as protective mother Jang Geum-ja (Player 149); Park Gyu-young as Kang No-eul, the North Korean defector who's now a pink-clad soldier; and Gong Yoo as the Recruiter on the outside. Showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk was overlooked for producing, writing, and directing Season 2 — he received all three noms for Season 1 and won the directing prize. And none of the below-the-line crafts from Squid Game earned any love, either. (Note: the third and final season dropped in June, so it will be eligible at the 2026 Emmys.) Other contenders who received support in our snap poll were Diego Luna for Andor, Patrick Schwarzenegger for The White Lotus, Elisabeth Moss for The Handmaid's Tale, and Selena Gomez for Only Murders in the Building. Finally, there's Yellowjackets, which received a combined 10 nominations for its first two seasons, but came away empty-handed for Season 3. 'The campaign for the show was basically posters and a late fyc virtua, event, it seems hulu was low on the budget for only two fields drama and limited. Andor's second season earned 14 total nominations overall, up from eight in Season 1. Meanwhile, Only Murders' fourth season garnered a series-low seven nominations, down from 21 for Season 3, 11 for Season 2, and 17 for Season 1. Even without Schwarzenegger, Leslie Bibb, and Michelle Monaghan failing to make the final ballot,The White Lotus pulled in 23 nominations for Season 3, the same as in Season 2, and up from 20 in Season 1. Eight of their costars — Walton Goggins, Jason Isaacs, Sam Rockwell, Carrie Coon, Parker Posey, Natasha Rothwell, Aimee Lou Wood, and Scott Glenn — did make the cut with Emmy voters, and will be scheduling their next vacation for Los Angeles on Sept. 14. The former show sailed off into the sunset with just a sole bid for guest actress Cherry Jones, who won in 2019 for playing Holly, the mother of Moss' June. Moss may have been robbed for the final season, but she still has two Emmys keeping her company for producing and starring in the debut season of The Handmaid's Tale in 2017. UNIMÁS Bets On K-Dramas To Target Younger Audiences With Debut Of ‘Goblin'

UNIMÁS will air its first ever K-drama, starring Korean actors Gong Yoo and Kim Go-eun. In a push to attract younger viewers and diversify its programming strategy, UNIMÁS is betting on the global Korean drama phenomenon, bringing K-dramas to its Spanish-language audience for the first time. TelevisaUnivision's secondary U.S. broadcast network — formerly known as Telefutura — will premiere Goblin, el guardián (Guardian: The Lonely and Great God) on July 9 at 10 pm ET, followed by W, Dos Mundos this fall. Both series will be dubbed in Spanish. Goblin, el guardián follows Kim Shin (Gong Yoo), an ancient warrior who was betrayed, killed and cursed to live forever as an immortal Goblin until he finds his destined bride to break the curse. When he meets Ji Eun-Tak (Kim Go-eun), a young woman who can see spirits, their love story unfolds alongside supernatural dynamics with a Grim Reaper roommate. Fans of Squid Game may recognize Gong Yoo as the recruiter from the hit Netflix series. Barbara Musa Ruiz, TelevisaUnivision's SVP of Programming Strategy and Scheduling, says the decision to bring K-dramas to UNIMÁS is rooted in the genre's global appeal and production quality. "K-dramas stand out due to their high production quality, including impressive cinematography and settings, and visual effects that enhance the viewer's experience, in addition to their emotional stories with surprising twists that will deeply connect with our audiences," she explains. The selection of Goblin and W, Dos Mundos was intentional. "These titles reflect the emotional depth and cinematic storytelling that have made K-dramas globally appealing, while aligning with the kind of character-driven narratives that perform well on our network," says Musa Ruiz. UNIMÁS has already begun promoting Goblin with a 360-degree campaign, aiming to build anticipation and awareness among viewers. "We aim to offer innovative and culturally enriching content that resonates with our diverse audience, especially the younger demographic, who represent the natural target for this phenomenon," notes Musa Ruiz. UNIMÁS Looks to Diversify and Evolve While this marks UNIMÁS's debut in airing K-drama series (Univision has never aired one), Korean content isn't entirely new to Spanish-language television. The now-defunct MundoFox network previously broadcast the Korean drama Escalera al Cielo (Stairway to Heaven) in 2013. International programming, however, has been a staple for UNIMÁS. The network has aired numerous Turkish series over the years, including Entre Dos Amores (2018), ¿Qué Culpa Tiene Fatmagül? (2020), Pajaro Soñador (2020), Las Mil y Una Noches (2021), La Hija del Embajador (2022), Amor Prohibido (2023), and Pecado Original (2025). Sister network Univision has also embraced Turkish content, airing series starting in 2019. Musa Ruiz emphasizes that the introduction of K-dramas is a natural extension of UNIMÁS's ongoing commitment to offering diverse storytelling and evolving alongside its audience's interests. "International content has always played a key role in UNIMÁS's programming strategy. While this marks our first launch of K-dramas, we've previously introduced acclaimed series from Brazil, Colombia, Turkey, and Mexico," she states. "Our mission remains the same: to deliver powerful, relatable stories, no matter where they come from." The move also serves to differentiate UNIMÁS from its sister network Univision. "UNIMÁS programming strategy is designed to push creative boundaries, offering diverse content that's distinctive, edgier, and often more experimental in format or origin," explains Musa Ruiz. At the same time, the goal is "to keep viewers engaged within the TelevisaUnivision ecosystem by offering complementary content experiences." So, why introduce K-dramas now? Musa Ruiz says that after monitoring trends and the global popularity of Korean content over the past decade, particularly in Latin America, the timing felt right. "In Mexico, for instance, K-dramas have strongly resonated with audiences, providing a solid foundation for introducing this genre to UNIMÁS viewers."

Watch: Fans Go Wild As South Korea Hosts A Real-Life Squid Game Parade

Last Updated: Squid Game fans in South Korea celebrated the final season with a street rally, featuring iconic symbols from the show, captured in a viral video. Squid Game fever has taken over the world. As the third and final season of Netflix's blockbuster hit show premiered on June 27, fans in South Korea decided to take the excitement around it a notch higher. They organised a full-blown street rally featuring all the quintessential symbols associated with the popular survival drama. A viral video capturing this moment, shared by digital content creator Rana Adil Mushtaq, based in South Korea, has garnered over 1.2 million views, and fans of the show are loving it. It featured a group of people dressed in the iconic pink jumpsuits with masks walking down the street alongside a large motion-sensing female animatronic doll used during the Red Light, Green Light games. Black coffins, where deceased players were laid to rest in the show, were also a part of the rally. As the video continued, some people in the parade were also seen wearing two-coloured jumpsuits, just like the 456 players in Squid Game. Few men were also seen in formal suits, just like Gong Yoo's mysterious character as the Salesman. Other symbols of the show in the parade featured the iconic games like jump rope and mingle. There were large balloons featuring the shapes used in the Dalgona challenge, as well as a big piggy bank filled with 45.6 billion Korean won, just like in the show. The caption atop the video read: 'Pov: You are in South Korea watching Squid Game in real life." Online users took to the comments section to react to the Squid Game-themed parade in South Korea. One said, 'You are lucky, and we cry while watching season 3." Another added, 'Now I want to be in Korea really bad.. Please." A different user wrote, 'Seriously, you are the luckiest person living in Korea and seeing real-life Squid Game." Squid Game 3 finally answered many questions of the fans, but it turned out to be the ending that no one was expecting. Seong Gi Hun, aka Player 456, played by Lee Jung Jae, returned to the deadly games in the second season to end it once and for all. However, he dies by the end of season 3 for the 'greater good." The character's final words on the show were, 'We are not horses. We are humans", which is really important, as it relates to the show's slogan about how low humanity may descend. Besides Jung Jae, the final instalment of the show featured Lee Byung Hun, Wi Ha Joon, Im Siwan, Park Sung Hoon, Kang Ae Shim, Yang Dong Geun, and Chae Gook Hee. Will Gong Yoo return in Squid Game Season 3? Here's why fans think The Recruiter might be alive in the final part

Squid Game Season 3: Ever since Gong Yoo's chilling role as The Recruiter in Squid Game, fans have gone bonkers with theories about his character appearing again in Season 3. Even though his character died in Season 2, an eagle-eyed clip of him briefly reopening his eyes sparked a wave of speculation. Now, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has hinted at exploring The Recruiter's backstory, hinting at either a comeback or even a full spin-off, leaving fans wondering: Is Gong Yoo really coming back? Squid Game season 3: Clues that fuelled Go Yoo's return rumour That blink in Season 2, Episode 2 quickly became one of the most talked-about moments among fans. Just as Gong Yoo's character, The Recruiter, is shown lying lifeless, his eye flickers open for a split second. It was easy to miss, but for those who caught it, the moment set off an avalanche of theories. Was it just a filming oversight? Or something far more deliberate? I knew The Salesman was alive 😂😂😂#SquidGame2 While casual viewers might dismiss it as a slip, long-time fans of Gong Yoo know better. He's not just any actor. He's known for being incredibly precise with his performances, often praised for how he uses subtle facial expressions to convey emotion or hidden intent. For someone with that level of control and experience, especially in a globally streamed Netflix series, the idea that such a moment was left in by accident feels unlikely to many. Creator confirms spin-off possibility In a big reveal, Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk strongly hinted that Gong Yoo's character might return, just not necessarily in Season 3. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he teased a possible spin-off series focused solely on the recruiter's arc, separate from the main story's end. That strongly suggests The Recruiter didn't vanish from the Squid Game universe forever. "If the time comes, and it just so happens that I'm able to come up with a character or a different story, then maybe there might be a comeback. But I'm thinking more along the lines of a spinoff," he shared. With Squid Game Season 3 being the finale, what could happen? Squid Game Season 3 drops on June 27, 2025, with six episodes earmarked as the grand conclusion to Gi Hun's fight against the system and possibly his final clash with the Front Man. Though no official credit for Gong Yoo appears in current cast listings, Netflix Tudum's Season 3 cast guide hints The Recruiter could have 'a bigger part this season'. So… Will Gong Yoo Return in Squid Game Season 3? The answer: it's very possible, though the exact how remains uncertain. Given Hwang's openness about spin-off plans, Gong Yoo might reappear via flashbacks or hidden scenes. Even if he doesn't show up in this final season, the door is wide open for more from his iconic character.
