Will Gong Yoo return in Squid Game Season 3? Here's why fans think The Recruiter might be alive in the final part

Time of India2 days ago

Squid Game Season 3: Ever since Gong Yoo's chilling role as The Recruiter in Squid Game, fans have gone bonkers with theories about his character appearing again in Season 3. Even though his character died in Season 2, an eagle-eyed clip of him briefly reopening his eyes sparked a wave of speculation. Now, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has hinted at exploring The Recruiter's backstory, hinting at either a comeback or even a full spin-off, leaving fans wondering: Is Gong Yoo really coming back?
Squid Game season 3: Clues that fuelled Go Yoo's return rumour
That blink in Season 2, Episode 2 quickly became one of the most talked-about moments among fans. Just as Gong Yoo's character, The Recruiter, is shown lying lifeless, his eye flickers open for a split second. It was easy to miss, but for those who caught it, the moment set off an avalanche of theories. Was it just a filming oversight? Or something far more deliberate?

While casual viewers might dismiss it as a slip, long-time fans of Gong Yoo know better. He's not just any actor. He's known for being incredibly precise with his performances, often praised for how he uses subtle facial expressions to convey emotion or hidden intent. For someone with that level of control and experience, especially in a globally streamed Netflix series, the idea that such a moment was left in by accident feels unlikely to many.
Creator confirms spin-off possibility
In a big reveal, Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk strongly hinted that Gong Yoo's character might return, just not necessarily in Season 3. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he teased a possible spin-off series focused solely on the recruiter's arc, separate from the main story's end. That strongly suggests The Recruiter didn't vanish from the Squid Game universe forever.
"If the time comes, and it just so happens that I'm able to come up with a character or a different story, then maybe there might be a comeback. But I'm thinking more along the lines of a spinoff," he shared.
With Squid Game Season 3 being the finale, what could happen?
Squid Game Season 3 drops on June 27, 2025, with six episodes earmarked as the grand conclusion to Gi Hun's fight against the system and possibly his final clash with the Front Man.
Though no official credit for Gong Yoo appears in current cast listings, Netflix Tudum's Season 3 cast guide hints The Recruiter could have 'a bigger part this season'.
So… Will Gong Yoo Return in Squid Game Season 3?
The answer: it's very possible, though the exact how remains uncertain. Given Hwang's openness about spin-off plans, Gong Yoo might reappear via flashbacks or hidden scenes. Even if he doesn't show up in this final season, the door is wide open for more from his iconic character.

From 1982 to 2019, four films released where heroine outshone hero, one became a blockbuster, another went to Oscars, film is…

Bollywood has often romanticised love and heroism, but every once in a while, it has delivered stories that challenge deep-rooted societal norms. Between 1982 and 2019, four Hindi films dared to portray the emotional landscape, discrimination, and inner strength of widowed women—some won critical acclaim, others broke box office records, and one even earned an Oscar nomination. What does Indian cinema reveal about the life of widows? These films not only address the emotional trauma of widowhood but also highlight the resilience, defiance, and personal growth of women forced to confront patriarchal systems. Their stories bring focus to the often-silenced voices in Indian society—those of single women and single mothers navigating life post-loss. The Last Color (2019) Directed by chef-turned-filmmaker Vikas Khanna, The Last Color tells a tender tale of friendship between a 70-year-old widow (played by Neena Gupta) and a 9-year-old flower seller. Set against the backdrop of Varanasi, the film's final Holi sequence, where widows celebrate the festival of colours—traditionally forbidden to them—is deeply symbolic and visually moving. If you missed watching it, grab a tub of popcorn and enjoy it on Prime Video. Dor (2006) Directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, Dor interweaves the lives of two women from different backgrounds—played by Ayesha Takia and Gul Panag. Ayesha's character, a Rajasthani widow, and Gul's character, whose husband is in prison, form a life-altering connection. Their journey explores forgiveness, freedom, and female solidarity in the face of cultural rigidity. If you missed watching it, grab a tub of popcorn and enjoy it on Sony Liv. Water (2005) Written by Anurag Kashyap and directed by Deepa Mehta, Water is set in 1938 and explores the lives of widows living in a secluded ashram. Starring Lisa Ray and John Abraham, the film exposes the harsh, patriarchal rules imposed on women—especially young widows—and the taboos surrounding widowhood. It received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, bringing global attention to an Indian social issue. If you missed watching it, grab a tub of popcorn and enjoy it on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV. Prem Rog (1982) This Raj Kapoor directorial, starring Rishi Kapoor and Padmini Kolhapure, is a love story steeped in social commentary. While it featured melodious songs and was a commercial hit, Prem Rog also tackled the taboo subject of widow remarriage at a time when such ideas were almost unspoken. It sensitively addressed the widow's right to love again, making it one of the most forward-thinking films of its time. If you missed watching it, grab a tub of popcorn and enjoy it on Prime Video and Zee5.

Why Katrina Kaif Can Give Honest Feedback To Vicky Kaushal But Not Accept His In Return

New Delhi: Vicky Kaushal recently completed 10 years in the film industry. In a candid conversation with Kareena Kapoor Khan who also completed 25 years in the industry, he spoke about how Katrina Kaif always gives him honest feedback about his work. However, she is not okay with him doing the same with her, as the first reaction has to be that of encouragement. What's Happening Vicky Kaushal spoke about how his wife, actress Katrina Kaif is always blunt when it comes to giving feedback about his work. During his interaction with Kareena Kapoor Khan for The Hollywood Reporter, Vicky said, "She is very honest. She will say how it is. But sometimes, she will be a little careful because whatever it is, there is a lot of hard work that has gone into it. You have to be sensitive towards that, and I can't just sometimes she is sensitive about it, but mostly she is straightforward, which I actually love. After a film screening, it is very rare to find that kind of feedback. This was good, this was bad, this you could have done better." When Kareena expressed how she wished that her husband, actor Saif Ali Khan was also open to such positive criticism, Vicky Kaushal interrupted and said that Katrina is the same. He said, "But it's the same over here. She wouldn't want that either. The first step has to be encouragement." How Reddit Reacted The internet was in splits as they reacted to Vicky Kaushal's statement. One social media user shared, "If you're dishing it out, you ought to be able to take it too." Another added, "Lol, Katrina has always been very sensitive about any kind of negative feedback." Someone else was a bit harsh when they wrote, "She's that person in a friend group who can dish out roasts but can't take it themselves and get angry if you say something about them." Work Vicky Kaushal's last release was the blockbuster Chhaava at the beginning of 2025. While Katrina Kaif was last seen in Sriram Raghavan's Merry Christmas with Vijay Sethupathi in 2024. In A Nutshell Social Media had the funniest reaction to Vicky Kaushal revealing that while he gets honest feedback from Katrina about his work, the same can't be done when he has to return the favour.
