Dunoon ferry water search 'concluded' after missing man 'fell overboard'

Police Scotland and HM Coastguard have confirmed that the search has ended for the man reported missing after falling overboard from a ferry near Dunoon. The search for a missing 64-year-old man who fell overboard from a ferry near Dunoon has ended as police provide "support to his family". The passenger was reported missing at around 1pm on the Sound of Shuna by his wife as they sailed between Gourock to Dunoon on Father's Day (Sunday June 15). ‌ A major multi-agency search operation was launched involving the HM Coastguard helicopter, RNLI lifeboats and nearby vessels, as well as Police Scotland officers, their Dive and Marine Unit and Air Support Unit. ‌ Western Ferries suspended their services while the rescue operation was underway as searches were carried out on the water and shorelines. However, the search has now concluded, with HM Coastguard noting that it was stood down at around 4.30pm on Monday with nothing found. The force confirmed that although water searches have ceased, enquiries remain ongoing as officers provide support to his family. Chief Inspector James McArthur said: "Around 1.40pm on Sunday, 15 June, 2025, we received a report of a 64-year-old man missing from a ferry travelling between Gourock and Dunoon. "Police and partner agencies including the Coastguard attended and extensive searches have been carried out on the water and shorelines. Local officers have been assisted by our Dive and Marine Unit and Air Support Unit. ‌ "The water searches have concluded, however our enquiries remain ongoing and officers are providing support to his family." A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said: "At around 1.24pm on Sunday 15 June, HM Coastguard received reports of a person overboard from a ferry travelling between Hunters Quay and Gourock, Scotland. "An HM Coastguard Rescue Helicopter and fixed wing aircraft were sent, alongside Coastguard Rescue Teams from Dunoon, Greenock, Kames, and Largs. Lifeboats from Helensburgh and Largs also joined the search. ‌ "The search was stood down at around 4.30pm yesterday with nothing found." A spokesperson for Western Ferries said at the time: "At approximately 13.20 on Sunday 15th June, the crew of Western Ferries' Sound of Shuna were alerted to an overboard incident. The vessel's crew immediately initiated the overboard procedures in accordance with maritime safety protocols. ‌ "Emergency services were contacted, and a co-ordinated search and rescue operation was launched involving all four Western Ferries vessels, RNLI lifeboats from Helensburgh and Largs, Caledonian MacBrayne's Ali Cat and several private vessels, together with the HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter." "Police Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service were also in attendance. Regrettably after an exhaustive search the individual was not located, and the Coastguard made the difficult decision to call off the search at around 8.30pm. "Western Ferries' Managing Director Gordon Ross has commended the emergency agencies and all those involved with the search for their prompt response and assistance." Major water search for man who fell from ferry in Dunoon suspended

The man was reported missing at around 1pm on Sunday on the ferry from Gourock to Dunoon. A search for a Scots man who fell overboard from a ferry on Sunday has been called off. The man was reported missing at around 1pm on June 15, from the Sound of Shauna, as it travelled between Gourock to Dunoon on the West Coast. The service was suspended to allow a search to take place, however, sailings resumed at around 9pm yesterday. ‌ A multi-agency response came together to search for the man, but was stood down on Sunday evening. ‌ The man, said to be in his 60s, was allegedly reported missing by his wife, who was also travelling on the service. She raised the alarm, which prompted a search from coastguard, helicopters, lifeboats and Police Scotland. Sadly the search has now been called off, according to Western Ferries, who run the boats on the route the incident took place on. A spokesperson for Western Ferries said: "At approximately 13.20 on Sunday 15th June, the crew of Western Ferries' Sound of Shuna were alerted to an overboard incident. Ferguson Marine loses out on another ferries contract

Scotland's nationalised shipyard Ferguson Marine has lost out on yet another contract to build new vessels – this time for Western Ferries. On Friday, the multi-million pound contract to build two new small vessels for the Western Ferries fleet was awarded to the APCL Cammell Laird shipyard in Birkenhead, England. David Dishon, chief financial officer at Ferguson Marine, said the news was 'disappointing'. He added: 'Ferguson Marine remains focused on securing new work from a range of sources to build its pipeline.' The two new River Clyde ferries are intended to operate on the Gourock to Dunoon route and reduce the average age of the Western Ferries fleet. Construction will begin shortly with both vessels due to be delivered to the Firth of Clyde in autumn 2026. Western Ferries managing director Gordon Ross said the decision to appoint Cammell Laird over Ferguson's followed a highly competitive process. 'APCL Cammell Laird was selected as the preferred bidder due to the strength of its proposal, demonstrating exceptional value in cost, expertise, and the quality of its shipbuilding facilities,' Mr Ross said. 'Their bid was immensely strong on all fronts, and with their heritage of maritime excellence, we are confident that they will deliver vessels of the highest quality, on time and on budget.' David McGinley, group CEO of APCL Group welcomed the announcement of this latest contract with Western Ferries. 'This contract marks the next major milestone in APCL Group being recognised as the UK's leading commercial shipbuilder,' he said. 'Continued orders from British companies to British shipyards ensure that the UK remains as a leader of commercial shipbuilding on the world stage.' The announcement on Friday marks the second time in two months that Ferguson Marine has been passed over for a new ferries contract. In March, the company lost out on a contract for seven new CalMac ferries to a shipbuilding firm in Poland. Mr Dishon from Ferguson Marine added: 'We are a nation with a proud shipbuilding heritage, it's great to see private investment into the build of new ferries, something vitally important to our economy and sector. 'We want to thank Western Ferries for the opportunity to bid and congratulate Cammell Laird on being selected as the preferred bidder. We wish both companies every success and hope to continue our long-standing working relationship with Western Ferries in the future.'
