Major water search for man who fell from ferry in Dunoon suspended
A search for a Scots man who fell overboard from a ferry on Sunday has been called off.
The man was reported missing at around 1pm on June 15, from the Sound of Shauna, as it travelled between Gourock to Dunoon on the West Coast. The service was suspended to allow a search to take place, however, sailings resumed at around 9pm yesterday.
A multi-agency response came together to search for the man, but was stood down on Sunday evening.
The man, said to be in his 60s, was allegedly reported missing by his wife, who was also travelling on the service. She raised the alarm, which prompted a search from coastguard, helicopters, lifeboats and Police Scotland.
Sadly the search has now been called off, according to Western Ferries, who run the boats on the route the incident took place on.
A spokesperson for Western Ferries said: "At approximately 13.20 on Sunday 15th June, the crew of Western Ferries' Sound of Shuna were alerted to an overboard incident. The vessel's crew immediately initiated the overboard procedures in accordance with maritime safety protocols.
"Emergency services were contacted, and a co-ordinated search and rescue operation was launched involving all four Western Ferries vessels, RNLI lifeboats from Helensburgh and Largs, Caledonian MacBrayne's Ali Cat and several private vessels, together with the HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter."
They continued: "Police Scotland the Scottish Ambulance Service were also in attendance. Regrettably after an exhaustive search the individual was not located, and the Coastguard made the difficult decision to call off the search at around 8.30pm.
"Western Ferries' Managing Director Gordon Ross has commended the emergency agencies and all those involved with the search for their prompt response and assistance."

A HM Coastguard spokesperson said: "HM Coastguard responded to reports of a person overboard between the Hunter's Quay and Gourock area in Scotland on Sunday 15 July.
"An HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter was tasked to conduct a search, alongside coastguard rescue teams from Largs, Kames, Helensburgh, Greenock and Dunoon, in addition to RNLI lifeboats from Helensburgh and Largs. Nearby vessels were also called to assist.
"Police Scotland and Scottish Ambulance Service were also in attendance. The search has been suspended."

Scots mum fears as boy 'tries to strangle her daughter' at primary school
The nine-year-old has been observed to have PTSD symptoms and anxiety as a result of the alleged abuse. A Scots mum fears for her daughter's life after she claimed a boy in her child's class attempted to strangle her on 'five occasions.' The mum, who we have chosen not to name to protect her daughter's identity, has said her nine-year-old has been observed to have PTSD symptoms, anxiety and incontinence as a result of the multiple alleged attacks. The young girl, who is diagnosed as autistic, had previously suffered violence at another Midlothian school and was later moved to her current primary, reports Edinburgh Live. At first the mum was hopeful as the school was classed as one of the highest rated in the region but her daughter is claimed to have fallen victim to repeated acts of violence. The first incident is understood to have taken place in September 2024, with the second in February 2025, and a third and fourth incident coming in March 2025, as well as another taking place in the final term of 2025. On three occasions, attempts to strangle her daughter took place in school with another two taking place at the after school club. However, the mum has since removed her daughter from the club. In an image shows a red mark is visible on the young girl's neck after what the mum claimed was one of the strangulation attempts. 'There have been three instances of her being strangled at school and two at the after school club by the same boy,' she claimed. 'After the first incident we were told preventative steps were put in place but it keeps happening. 'On the second occasion I got a call from the deputy head telling me another boy had pinned her down while the same boy strangled her. I was then assured they would be separated and I was confident something would be done as staff seemed understanding. That was until it happened again. 'It is a tricky situation and I understand the other child has a right to an education but so does my child,' she added. 'At what point does this boy's right to an education trump my daughter's right to be safe? 'Unbelievably the school said she could be moved class and when I suggested the boy should be, as my daughter has already faced disruption, they said absolutely not. 'Why is it ok for her to be moved and not him? We had to put her into play therapy just to get her back into school after initially pulling her out. 'When my child was off school the boy targeted another young girl. So if she is moved class, it will not solve the problem. 'Her therapist observed PTSD symptoms in her, the violence is having a real psychological impact. Her whole future is being shaped by this. 'She is drawing pictures of herself with head injuries and writing 'I Hate School.' She is repeatedly telling us she does not feel safe and nothing is happening. 'As a mother, why do I have to risk my daughter's life by sending her to school? I tried to home school but I need to work or we will lose our house and income.' Concerns were heightened after the mum claimed that the young boy was found to have snapped cutlery items which were sharpened to points in his school tray at the end of the school year. 'On the last week of term, items were found in this boy's tray, forks and spoons with ends snapped off and sharpened into a point. My daughter and another boy told the teacher and he became physical and started threatening them. 'What if one of these weapons was used on my daughter? The first time could be fatal for her. 'He has also told her repeatedly she should be dead, she is adopted and she is a 'f*****g b***h.' She is in so much psychological distress. 'He has left her with marks on her neck from the strangulation. Ultimately the responsibility to do something lies with the council. 'Teachers are not paid to deal with this, they have classes of up to 30 kids and they are struggling. The boy strangling her is clearly not getting the right support and my daughter is receiving close to none. At what point does his behaviour become fatal? 'It is so easy for them to brush it off as kids being kids but we know where this leads to.' A Midlothian Council spokesman said: 'As we would always advise, families should work with the school. We do not comment on individual cases.'

Industrial estate fire suspect caught on CCTV
A person suspected of starting a fire at an industrial estate in Glasgow has been captured on crews were alerted to the blaze at a single-storey commercial building on Stanley Street at about 06:45 on footage, obtained by BBC Scotland News, shows a person walking up a lane near the Kinning Park storage unit, then climbing over a are then seen coming from the area behind the wall, before the suspect appears again, jumps off the wall and runs off.
