Ryots protest against second phase land pooling in Andhra

GUNTUR: Tension flared in Ponnekallu village of Tadikonda mandal on Saturday when a group of villagers staged a protest during a Grama Sabha. It may be recalled that the State government has commenced the second phase of land pooling for Amaravati's development, and the Grama Sabhas are being held in Tadikonda mandal to gather farmers' views. The meeting, attended by Tadikonda MLA Sravan Kumar and officials, was disrupted by protestors who raised slogans such as 'Go back,' opposing the proposed land acquisition and alleging a lack of transparency. The meeting was halted. Guntur RDO K Srinivasa Rao told TNIE that a few farmers disrupted the session with 'ulterior motives'. However, he said that Grama Sabhas in nearby villages such as Nekkallu and Tadikapadu were conducted peacefully, with most farmers agreeing to part with their land. Grama Sabhas were completed in the other nine villages of the mandal. While supporting the land pooling initiative, many farmers raised concerns regarding loan waivers on pledged lands, an increase in annual lease payments, and a 15-year lease period, similar to what was offered during the first phase. MLA Sravan Kumar assured the farmers that their concerns would be brought to the Chief Minister's attention and that suitable steps would be taken after due consideration.

Central team evaluates execution of schemes in Andhra Pradesh

VISAKHAPATNAM: A seven-member delegation from the Ministry of Panchayat Raj, Government of India, visited various villages in Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR) district on Saturday to assess the implementation of government schemes and the functioning of Grama Sabhas. The team, led by Joint Secretary Mukta Sekhar, visited Paderu and Araku Valley mandals. During their field inspection, the officials evaluated the delivery of public services, village-level planning through Grama Sabhas, and the availability of basic infrastructure. At Minumuluru village in Paderu mandal, the team met local coffee and pepper farmers to understand their economic conditions, challenges in cultivation, and concerns related to Minimum Support Prices (MSP). On the occasion, Mukta Shekhar emphasised the role of village resolutions (Grama Sanhas) in formulating effective development plans tailored to local needs. The team also visited a camp organised by the Women and Child Welfare Department in the village, where they observed traditional community programmes such as Seemantham and Annaprasana. They reviewed the process of pension distribution and enquired about the practice of cash disbursement. ASR Joint Collector Dr MJ Abhishek Gowda explained that due to limited banking facilities in the region and the remote location of many beneficiaries, pensions are being provided in cash to ensure accessibility. He added that the process is monitored through the IVRS system to maintain transparency and prevent irregularities. The team also visited Sunkarametta village in Araku mandal, where they held interactions with residents and gathered feedback on local governance.

Tenant farmers plan protests in A.P. on June 9 for ID cards, crop loans

The Andhra Pradesh Tenant Farmers' Association State committee has passed a resolution to organise protests at all mandal headquarters on June 9, demanding immediate issuance of identification cards for tenant farmers, along with access to crop loans and investment assistance. In a statement on Friday, association president E. Katamayyah and general secretary P. Jamalayya said the kharif season was about to begin in the first week of June but the State government has not yet issued identification cards to tenant farmers. Without these ID cards, the farmers will be ineligible for crop loans. They demanded that the State government conduct Grama Sabhas and issue ID cards to tenant farmers without requiring landowners' consent. As per the RBI guidelines, they demanded that unsecured crop loans up to ₹2 lakh be issued as per the Scale of Finance norms. They also demanded that the 'Annadata Sukhibhava' scheme be extended to farmers for the upcoming kharif season. To pressure the government to implement these resolutions, the association called upon tenant farmers to participate in widespread protests on June 9 at all mandal headquarters across the State.
