Maserati will improve its current electric cars before launching new EVs

Maserati will launch extended-range versions of its electric Grecale crossover and Granturismo sports car later this year as part of a push to keep developing and improving its EV line-up. The Italian firm launched its first two electric cars in 2024, offering EV power in those model lines as an alternative to mild-hybrid and pure-petrol ICE options. It was due to launch an electric Quattroporte this year but delayed that car until later this decade and now says improving its existing EVs and increasing uptake is the priority over launching new models. Speaking at the unveiling of the new MCPura – the renamed and lightly restyled replacement for the V6-powered MC20 supercar – Maserati engineering boss Davide Danesin said the firm has adjusted its strategy in light of declining demand for premium electric cars and will continue to invest in its existing EVs rather than branching out into new segments. He said: 'Maserati has invested a lot in an electric roadmap in the past years and we produced two wonderful products: the Grecale Folgore and the Granturismo Folgore. Unfortunately, the acceptance from the market of BEV cars is low, so we are also affected, like all the other brands, by the low demand. 'But we developed great technologies in the past years for electrification and I think many of them are going to last. For example, this year, we are releasing the Grecale Folgore in an extended-range version, with additional kilometres of range, and we're going soon to do the same for the Granturismo. We are still developing our battery-electric vehicles to improve performance.' He did not disclose any details about these extended-range EVs. The Grecale Folgore is currently offered with a 105kWh pack under the floor, giving an official range of 311 miles, while the electric Granturismo's T-shaped battery has a usable capacity of 83kWh for an official 280 miles. It remains to be seen whether Maserati will boost the capacity of these batteries to eke out more miles per charge, or whether the duo's respective range figures will be extended by virtue of efficiency improvements elsewhere. Danesin said Maserati will continue to update its electric cars to keep pace with rivals and new technologies: 'Of course, on the other side, we need to follow the roadmap of the technology. We know the technology is evolving and we are evolving. "We are going to follow the roadmap of cell evolution in the next years to continuously improve our products. Some other technologies that we developed on the current Folgore we are going to further refine and bring on. We are following our internal roadmap of continuous improvement.'

Maserati may be struggling, but its parent company, Stellantis, says it's not ready to cut ties. The automaker reaffirmed its commitment to the historic Italian brand this week, responding to renewed speculation that Maserati could be on the chopping block. The denial came after Reuters reported that Stellantis had hired McKinsey & Company to help chart a course forward amid sluggish sales and mounting external pressures, including new U.S. import tariffs. Two sources told Reuters that all options-including a potential divestment of Maserati-were on the table. But a Stellantis spokesperson pushed back firmly. "Respectfully, Maserati is not for sale," the company said, signaling it still sees long-term value in Maserati despite recent turbulence. While Stellantis says it isn't shopping Maserati around, it has engaged consultants to take a hard look at the brand's future. According to sources familiar with the talks, McKinsey is still early in its review process and has yet to deliver any formal recommendations. One source noted that Stellantis instructed McKinsey to consider "all possibilities," suggesting that even internal discussions may be more open-ended than the company lets on publicly. Meanwhile, there are reported disagreements among Stellantis's leadership. Some board members believe Maserati holds unique value as the company's only true luxury marque, while others question whether Stellantis can afford to give the brand the support it needs. Part of the problem is Maserati's product pipeline-or lack thereof. The brand discontinued two of its best-selling models, the Ghibli sedan and Levante SUV, with replacements not scheduled until 2028 and 2027, respectively. That's an eternity in a rapidly evolving auto market. For now, the $80,000 Grecale compact SUV is Maserati's only utility vehicle-a risky position given ongoing consumer demand for crossovers. The GranTurismo and MC20 supercar round out the lineup, but neither is likely to generate meaningful volume in today's market. Former Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares acknowledged last year that Maserati was "in the red," and the company's performance hasn't improved. Through the first quarter of 2025, sales are down nearly 50% compared to the year before. The broader issue might be strategic confusion. Maserati is supposed to be Stellantis's halo brand, but it's increasingly caught in a tug-of-war with Alfa Romeo. Both companies are Italian, performance-focused, and eyeing premium segments-but they can't cannibalize each other. That makes lineup planning even more complicated. If Stellantis is serious about turning Maserati around, it will likely need to invest heavily and clarify the brand's role within the conglomerate. But that kind of long-term bet is hard to square with short-term financial losses, especially as Stellantis faces headwinds on multiple other fronts. For now, the automaker is holding the line. Maserati is opening a dealership in the city's Southside as part of its new partnership with Arnold Clark. The Italian luxury brand, renowned for its racing heritage, will be based at a showroom in Mossland Drive in Hillington Park. Maserati's Glasgow location will offer both sales and after-sales. It's a 2023 base model, so it's being sold for slightly under 58% of its original MSRP. That's a depreciation rate of 42% in just a few years with low mileage. How much should you pay for a used Maserati Grecale? Getting a used Maserati Grecale is a great way to enjoy Maserati thrills without paying new Maserati prices. Kelley Blue Book's fair purchase price for a 2023 Maserati Grecale with under 29K miles from a dealer is $38,522. Its typical listing price is $39,222. So, you can score a Maserati Grecale for under market value if Hertz's prices are as advertised when the ink is dry on paperwork. That said, Hertz's Grecale models are located across the country and the company could tack on extra fees to the purchase, so take these prices with a grain of salt and do your own due diligence. 2026 Toyota RAV4 goes all-hybrid: New models, more power and bold design At a glance, Hertz is offering the Grecale small luxury SUV for attractive prices, but buyers should still take caution. The small luxury SUV accelerates from 0-60 miles per hour in 5.0 seconds. It achieves 22 miles per gallon in the city and 28 miles per gallon on the highway. The Grecale comes standard with all-wheel drive. Maserati's SUV features high-quality cabin materials and over 33 inches of display surfaces. Car and Driver praises the Grecale's "sporty yet comfortable ride ." Maserati's small luxury SUV offers an entry point to Maserati ownership for the average American car buyer. Heavily discounted used models are even more affordable, with a fair market value below the average price of new cars. The Grecale's rate of depreciation isn't uncommon in the luxury SUV vehicle class. So, Hertz's current Grecale offerings could be the perfect opportunity to get behind the wheel of one for interested parties.
