Iowa basketball officially inks four-star forward Trey Thompson

After announcing his commitment to Iowa basketball on July 5, four-star power forward Trey Thompson has finally put pen to paper on Wednesday to officially sign with the Hawkeyes for the upcoming 2025-26 season. 'Trey has a level of versatility that we look for in all of our players,' said head coach Ben McCollum. 'He's 6-foot-8, he's physical, can really shoot it and pass it. Trey processes the game quickly to be able to trigger offense, which should help us in Big Ten play.' Thompson has averaged 21.8 points, 9.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game on 56% shooting from the field, 45% from 3-point territory, and 81% from the free-throw line in his three varsity seasons from Greeneville High School, per his MaxPreps profile. The 6-foot-8, 220-pound forward out of Greeneville, Tenn., chose the Hawkeyes over offers from some powerhouse programs, including Tennessee, Purdue, Kansas, Clemson, and Vanderbilt. Thompson is the fourth Class of 2025 prospect to join the Iowa roster, joining West Des Moines' Trevin Jirak, Oklahoma's Tate Sage, and Missouri's Peyton McCollum. He is also the 14th player on the Iowa roster, along with Drake transfers Bennett Stirtz, Kael Combs, Cam Manyawu, Isaia Howard, Tavion Banks, and Joey Matteoni, Robert Morris transfer Alvaro Folgueiras, Kansas State transfer Brendan Hausen, and Hawkeye returnees Cooper Koch and walk-on Jacob Koch. Iowa basketball lands Trey Thompson, will reclassify to 2025 class

With Iowa basketball in its first offseason under new head coach Ben McCollum, the Hawkeyes received a significant impact to the team's immediate future on Saturday afternoon as 2026 four-star power forward recruit Trey Thompson announced his commitment to the Hawkeyes. The towering 6-foot-8, 220-pound native of Greeneville, Tenn., is listed as the No. 2 prospect in the state, No. 9 power forward, and No. 59 overall recruit in the 2026 recruiting class according to 247Sports. Adding to the excitement, Thompson will also be reclassifying to the 2025 class, making him eligible for the 2025-26 campaign. In his three seasons on the varsity squad at Greeneville High School, Thompson has averaged 21.8 points, 9.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.2 blocks per game on 56% shooting from the field, 45% from 3-point territory, and 81% from the free-throw line, per his MaxPreps profile. Thompson chose Iowa over a list of other premier college basketball programs, which included Tennessee, Purdue, Vanderbilt, and Clemson. The commitment is a major step in the right direction for the program, as recruits are now viewing the Hawkeyes' program as a much more desirable destination under the new leadership and infusion of talent to the roster.
