Court imposes a fine of nearly $37,000 for British Columbia commercial groundfish harvester Français

, June 24, 2025 /CNW/ - Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) manages groundfish fisheries for seven distinct commercial sectors on the Pacific Coast: Groundfish trawl, Halibut, Sablefish, Inside Rockfish, Outside Rockfish, Lingcod, and Dogfish. These fisheries are highly regulated and managed to conserve the stocks and support economic prosperity for the communities who fish there. On May 22, 2025, Stefan Grega, owner of the commercial fishing vessel the Pacific Sunrise, pled guilty to multiple violations of Canada's Fisheries Act. During the 2022-2023 commercial Halibut fishery, Mr. Grega illegally retained and sold fish caught in the Haida Gwaii Archipelago during a fishery closure. The court imposed a $30,000 fine and ordered Mr. Grega to pay an additional $6,989.35, representing proceeds from the illegal harvest, resulting in a total financial penalty of $36,989.35. DFO protects and conserves marine resources, and enforces the Fisheries Act. As part of DFO's work to disrupt and prevent illegal activity, the Department asks the public for information on activities of this nature or any contravention of the Fisheries Act and regulations. Anyone with information can call DFO Pacific Region's toll-free violation reporting line at 1-800-465-4336, or email the details to [email protected]. Quick Facts: The Pacific Region commercial Groundfish fishery is fully monitored at-sea and dockside through either electronic systems or onboard observers to ensure compliance with regulations and support sustainable management. Electronic monitoring data is reviewed by third-party providers to detect closed-area fishing and verify catch records, with any potential violations reported to DFO. DFO's inspection process relies on several tools and programs, including fishing logbooks, electronic monitoring video systems, the dockside monitoring program and the Groundfish Audit System. These were all instrumental in identifying and investigating Mr. Grega's illegal activities. In Canada, fish can only be bought or sold if caught by someone who holds a valid commercial fishing licence which specifies that they can sell their catch. Any fish sold must be processed through a licensed plant to ensure quality and public safety. Fish that has not been inspected may be unsafe for consumption and could pose significant health risks. Elliott Wave Live: SP500 and Nasdaq Are Breaking Out, Will Bitcoin Follow?

Good day to everyone! The US dollar saw a strong move to the downside last week when the stock market recovered on positive speculation that Trump and his administration could meet with Ukraine and Russia to start negotiations to end the war. This would have a bullish impact on the market, so further upside in stocks could put additional pressure on the US dollar, especially if crude oil weakens. Lower crude=lower US CPI expectations. Interestingly, we also saw some reversals in metals from ATH, suggesting that investors are not urgently seeking safe havens. Another reason for potential dollar weakness is the Trump administration's decision to push for more 'fair' trade tariffs. Now looking at this week's data, we will get some important announcements, including rate decisions from the RBA and the RBNZ, while in the US, investors will focus on details from the latest Fed meeting, though it is unlikely that we will get anything new. The Fed is expected to keep rates on hold, especially as inflation ticked slightly higher. Dollar Index saw drop through the key 107 support, which we discussed last week. This is a very important level, and with a daily and weekly close below it, I think this could bring more weakness, as the third leg of a bearish impulse could now be in progress, possibly heading toward 106 in the next few days. On the flip side, if someone wants to focus on bullish trends on the Dollar Index, I would suggest waiting for 108.50 to be broken before considering any shift in outlook. Grega

Elliott Wave Live: US Inflation Data Ready To Break The USD Range

I hope you had a great weekend and are ready for a new trading week, which could bring some interesting volatility. As you know, Trump is planning to announce new tariffs today, which could once again shake the market. However, it's possible that at some point, markets will become less reactive to tariffs, as they know he's serious about them, so this may not be a huge surprise. One of the key events this week will be the US CPI data on Wednesday, with expectations for no change at 2.9%. I believe this is another piece of the puzzle that may help provide a clearer picture of what the Fed could do next with rates, especially after Friday's mixed NFP data, where fewer jobs were created but unemployment fell to 4%. From an Elliott wave perspective, the Dollar Index still appears poised for more weakness after the current rebound, which is unfolding in three legs. Right now, the price is testing the first key resistance around 108.30. If the price remains sideways or even pushes toward the higher resistance near 109, there's a chance we could see a bullish triangle remain in play until Wednesday's CPI report, which could finally trigger a major breakout from current dollar's range, hopefully to the downside.
