Family of teenage girl allegedly tortured and murdered by man she met on Grindr sues app

The family of a Florida teenager who was allegedly tortured, murdered and dismembered by a man she met on Grindr has filed a lawsuit, claiming the girl would still be alive if she had never met the man on the dating app. Miranda Corsette, 16, met Steven Gress, 35, on the app on February 14. Gress and his girlfriend, Michelle Brandes, 37, allegedly held the teen against her will inside Gress' St. Petersburg home before killing her. Corsette suffocated to death after the couple allegedly shoved a billiard ball in her mouth and wrapped her head in plastic before chopping her up and stuffing her body parts in the trunk of their car. Months later, a representative of Corsette's estate filed a lawsuit against Grindr, alleging that the features of the app and lack of safeguards for minors contributed to the girl's death. 'Without Grindr, we believe that Miranda would have never met this Steven Gress character, and she'd still be alive,' Attorney Lorne Kaiser said. 'This was a completely foreseeable event. Grinder has been warned for years and years about children and minors getting on this platform, and it's obviously a dangerous platform for children.' It was alleged that Gress was able to target Corsette through the app because of its 'lax age verification and hyper-precise geolocation.' 'The trauma inflicted upon M.C. (Miranda) and the irreparable harm to her family are direct consequences of Grindr's reckless disregard for the safety of minor children who are routinely preyed upon by adult predators who use Grindr's platform and design as a trap,' the suit states. According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, Gress and the teen first hung out at the couple's St. Petersburg home on February 14. He drove her home, and then she returned the next day. Gress told detectives that he was told she was 21 but later learned she was 16, according to an arrest affidavit. It wasn't long before Gress accused her of stealing his ring, which sparked the weeklong abuse and torture, the warrant states. As Gress allegedly continued to torture Corsette in their home, his girlfriend reportedly found the missing ring in Gress's car. Police said there is no evidence Corsette took the ring. The torture ended on February 23 when Brandes allegedly shoved a billiard ball into the teen's mouth and wrapped her head in plastic, a witness said. Gress reportedly told her not to cover her nose, but Brandes did, the witness said, and Corsette suffocated. After she was killed, Gress allegedly put her body in a car and drove to a house in Largo, where police say Gress used a chainsaw to dismember her body. They put the remains in trash bags and tossed them into a dumpster, and police later learned that the contents went to the county's incinerator. The new lawsuit claims the LGBTQ+ dating app failed to implement safeguards to prevent minors like Corsette from using it. 'Long before February 14, 2025, it was clear to Grindr that it was only a matter of time before its app, as Grindr marketed it and designed it, would cause the torture, rape, and murder of a child,' the lawsuit states. According to the suit, the app only requires a self-reported birthdate to confirm users are at least 18, with no cross-checking against official documentation or third-party verification at sign-up. The lawsuit claims the teen's murder 'exposes the platform's gross negligence in relying on a farcical self-reported age verification system. This performative gesture, as absurd as a bar or strip club asking teenagers to state their age without checking ID, allowed a minor to access an adult-oriented platform with foreseeable catastrophic consequences.' It's also claimed that the app's geolocation services 'deliver hyper-precise, real-time geolocation tracking — accurate to within a few feet — designed to facilitate immediate sexual encounters. As such, Grindr arranges user profiles based on their distance from other users for instant and spontaneous sexual hookups creating a uniquely hazardous environment for minors.' Corsette's family member is seeking $750,000 and is asking the court to order Grindr to implement more robust age verification measures, like government-issued identification verification or facial age estimation system, and to stop what the suit claims are misleading claims about the app's safety. Grindr LLC has not yet filed a response to the suit, according to Gress and Brandes are facing first-degree murder charges for Corsette's death and are being held at the Pinellas County Jail without bond. Prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty in the case.

This story was originally published on BioPharma Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily BioPharma Dive newsletter. Today, a brief rundown of news involving City Therapeutics and Grin Therapeutics, as well as updates from Savara Pharma, Aurion Biotech and Prothena that you may have missed. Biogen is partnering with RNA drug developer City Therapeutics to develop a better way of reaching a unspecified target that 'mediates key central nervous system diseases.' Biogen will pay City, a startup that launched publicly late last year, $16 million in upfront fees and invest another $30 million in convertible notes that could later become a minority stake. 'With this effort, we are further expanding the modalities in our R&D toolbox to potentially reach our targets of interest more precisely by adding an RNAi-based approach," Biogen research head Jane Grogan said in a statement. — Ned Pagliarulo Biotechnology startup Grin Therapeutics will get $50 million in a deal that hands Angelini Pharma rights outside of North America to an experimental drug Grin has developed for genetic epilepsies and other neurological conditions. On Tuesday, Grin also announced the closing of a $140 million Series D round that involved Angelini and Blackstone Life Sciences. Grin's drug, radiprodil, targets a receptor that is thought to contribute to epilepsy when overactivated. The company plans to start a Phase 3 trial in the third quarter that will test radiprodil in a neurodevelopmental condition that causes seizures. — Gwendolyn Wu The Food and Drug Administration declined to review a drug Savara is developing for a rare lung condition called pulmonary alveolar proteinosis. According to Savara, the agency deemed the company's application incomplete and asked for more information about how the treatment, Molbreevi, is made. The FDA didn't identify any safety issues or request more efficacy data, Savara said. The company will request a meeting with the FDA within the next month. Its share price fell by more than 20% Tuesday.— Ben Fidler Aurion Biotech has withdrawn plans to go public, according to a regulatory filing. The cell therapy developer filed for an initial public offering in January, but did so despite opposition from shareholder Alcon, leading to a legal spat between the firm and another equity holder, Deerfield Management, over Aurion's future. Alcon bought a majority stake in Aurion in late March, however, and replaced the biotech's CEO. Aurion said in a Friday filing that an IPO is no longer "in the best interests of the company." — Ben Fidler Shares in Prothena fell by more than 30% to open Tuesday trading following the company's disclosure Friday that a late-stage trial of a drug called birtamimab failed to reach its main goal. As a result, Prothena has decided to shelve further development of birtamimab, which it had been studying as a treatment for the disease AL amyloidosis. 'This is not the outcome that we expected, and we are surprised and disappointed by these results,' said Prothena CEO Gene Kinney, in a statement. The company is now considering ways to reduce expenses, among them an expected substantial workforce reduction.' — Ned Pagliarulo Recommended Reading Regeneron defeats Amgen in PCSK9 case; 2 cell therapy biotechs cut staff Error in retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data

Influencer Marketing: How AI And Infrastructure Unlock Brand Growth

AI is changing how creator marketing works, from identifying talent to measuring results. But most teams still aren't set up to take full advantage. The reason? Creator marketing lacks the infrastructure other parts of marketing rely on. There's no standard tech stack, no universal system, and much of the work still lives in spreadsheets, decks, or tools brands don't even own. That's a problem. Creator marketing is no longer experimental. According to Deloitte Digital's 2025 State of Social Research, creators now account for nearly a quarter of all social media budgets, more than any other line item. With investments at that scale, brands need a system that works. At the recent event, Digital Entertainment World, leaders from Traackr, Grin, Aspire, Later, and CreatorIQ joined Edelman's Steph Money to explore how AI is closing the infrastructure gap and what brands need to run creator marketing like any other core function of their business. Creator discovery is evolving from instinct to insight. AI is helping teams go beyond manual searches to uncover patterns in content, sentiment, and audience behavior. 'AI can scan performance, content style, sentiment, and audience match, then generate a short list aligned to your goals,' said Olivia McNaughten, Head of Marketing at Grin. 'You might find a creator who performs well, but if they're difficult to work with, that has a cost, too. AI can't see that. Only people can.' AI allows marketers to identify creators with real influence in relevant communities. It enables a more strategic approach to building creator portfolios similar to how media teams optimize media buys. Because AI handles the repetitive work, marketers have more time for what only humans can do: build trust and shape creative ideas. For many brands, creator data lives in too many places or isn't easily accessed. When programs are outsourced or fragmented, data ends up in spreadsheets, PowerPoints, or platforms the brand doesn't control. That makes it hard to track performance or build on what's working. 'You can't build anything sustainable if every campaign starts from zero,' said Taylor Rodriguez, Global VP of Customer Experience at Traackr. 'We talk to teams who have been running creator programs for years, but they can't tell you which partnerships are worth reinvesting in or what moved the needle. Without the right system, all that knowledge disappears.' Jacob Clark, VP of Customer Success at Aspire, added, 'We treat creator relationship data like we would customer data. Centralized, searchable, and actionable. When you build that kind of system, you're not just tracking performance. You're capturing the full history of how a partnership evolves. That helps you see who to reinvest in, what works across markets, and where future opportunities are hiding.' 'With AI layered on top, these insights become even more powerful. The more signals you collect, creator history, engagement, and performance, the more innovative and tailored the strategy becomes,' added Rodriguez. More content is being created than ever before. But more doesn't mean better. AI is helping marketers understand which content is driving real results and why. 'There's going to be a massive amount of content, and that's going to change what performance looks like,' said Bill Stanton, Head of Enterprise Sales at Later. 'Certain thresholds, certain metrics that were important a year ago, might now be watered down or no longer relevant.' He added, 'It's not about more data. It's about getting the right signals to make smarter calls about what's working and worth scaling.' 'You can't just track what went viral,' said Nate Harris, VP of Product Innovation at CreatorIQ. 'You have to understand why it worked and who it worked for. That's what informs your next move.' Harris continued, 'AI helps identify patterns. What kind of content drives action, and for which audiences? That insight is what turns performance data into a strategic advantage.' AI makes performance analysis more than a reporting function. It becomes a feedback loop that helps teams optimize creative, distribution, and targeting with each cycle. As creator budgets increase, so does the pressure to deliver results at scale. AI helps teams move faster, reduce friction, and make decisions with more clarity. 'The goal isn't just automation. It's elevation,' said Steph Money, SVP@Edelman AI 'AI gives marketers the power to scale strategy, not just execution. The real unlock is when creativity and data flow through the same infrastructure. You're not just producing content faster; you're making better decisions at every stage.' When creator discovery, relationship management, and performance are connected, Creator marketing becomes a continuous function like paid media or CRM. 'If we set up the systems the right way, creators get to spend more time making, and brands get to learn faster from what they make,' said Harris. That approach turns creator marketing into a long-term growth engine, not a side project. Creator marketing is evolving, but many brands are stuck in trial-and-error mode. Budgets are growing. Expectations are rising. And AI is accelerating what's possible. But none of that matters without infrastructure. As the speakers from Traackr, Grin, Aspire, Later, and CreatorIQ emphasized, creator marketing lacks what every other discipline has: a dedicated tech stack. That absence makes it harder to learn, measure, and scale. Without structure, even the best creative strategies won't go far. The brands that succeed won't be the ones with the most content. They'll be the ones with a clear system and the ability to make that system smarter with every campaign
