5 suspects in killing of UC Berkeley professor appear in Greek court

ATHENS, Greece -- Five suspects implicated in the killing of a University of California, Berkeley professor appeared in court in Athens on Thursday, including his ex-wife, who has denied all charges. Przemyslaw Jeziorski, 43, was shot and killed July 4 in Athens while visiting Greece to see his two young children and finalize legal arrangements for future visitation. Among those who appeared in court was Jeziorski's Greek ex-wife, who remains in police custody on charges of solicitation to commit murder. Her boyfriend, a 35-year-old Greek man, has been charged with murder. Three other men, also charged as alleged accomplices, were present. All five appeared at a central Athens court and were given until Monday to prepare their defense, court officials said. Alexandros Pasiatas, a lawyer for the ex-wife, said she had no role in the crime. 'From the outset, my client has maintained that she is innocent and has no involvement in the crime,' Pasiatas said. 'The evidence is overwhelmingly in her favor.' Jeziorski, who was born in Poland, was an associate professor of marketing at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business. In a statement this week, the school described him as a 'passionate teacher and leading marketing scholar.'

Greek authorities charge 5 in killing of UC Berkeley professor, including ex-wife, reports say

The ex-wife of a University of California, Berkeley professor who was gunned down during a visit to Greece earlier this month is among five people who have been charged in his killing, reports say. Przemyslaw "Przemek" Jeziorski, 43, an associate professor at the Haas School of Business, was fatally shot in a suburb of Athens on July 4. Reports from Greece and Poland, where Jeziorski is from, said he was near his ex-wife's home when a masked gunman shot him at least five times. He was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the Greek newspaper Kathimerini, the 43-year-old woman and four suspected accomplices appeared before a prosecutor Thursday morning. The woman, an economist who owns a real estate management company, is accused of ordering the killing. Her current partner, a 35-year-old man, is believed to have shot Jeziorski. Three other men, only identified as two Albanian nationals and a man from Bulgaria, are also accused in the case. The newspaper reported that the ex-wife has denied involvement, while police said they have allegedly obtained confessions from the other suspects. Jeziorski had two children with his ex-wife, who returned to Greece after their divorce six years ago. According to her attorney, the former couple were in the midst of a child custody dispute. CBS News Bay Area has not been able to independently confirm these reports. Jeziorski had taught at the university since 2012 and previously studied at the Warsaw School of Economics, the University of Arizona, the University of Chicago and the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Outside of his work at the university, Jeziorski co-founded the startup Keybee, a service that helps manage short-term rentals. "He had a passion for teaching, and during his 13 years at Berkeley Haas he taught data analytics skills to more than 1,500 MBA and PhD students," the business school said in a statement about his passing. Miguel Villas-Boas, one of Jeziorski's colleagues, said, "Przemek was one of the most-if not the most-knowledgeable experts on empirical analysis in marketing in the world, so this is a tremendous loss to the field and to Haas. He added, "He was generous with his time, extremely caring about the Haas community, courageous to tackle important problems, full of grace and gentleness, and a loving father."

UC Berkeley Marketing Professor Shot Dead By Masked Shooter In Greece

A UC Berkeley professor was shot dead in broad daylight in the Greek capital, Athens, on July 4. Przemyslaw (Przemek) Jeziorski, an economist and marketing professor at the Haas School of Business, was in Greece for a hearing on the custody of his two young children. According to police spokesperson Konstantina Dimoglidou, at approximately 4:15 pm, a masked shooter "approached the victim on foot and opened fire from close range," shooting the victim in the chest and neck. Police found seven gunshot casings from a 9mm calibre gun at the location, and an investigation into the murder is underway. The incident took place in the northeast Athens suburb of Agia Paraskevi, CNN reported. Authorities are treating the shocking incident as a homicide and closely investigating all potential causes, including family involvement and possible contract killing. The suspect is still at large over a week later, and Mr Jeziorski's friends and family are calling on the authorities to step up their efforts. In a Facebook statement, Lukasz Jeziorski said his brother was on his way to meet his children when he was killed on a street near their home. "My brother, Przemyslaw Jeziorski, went to meet his beloved children - Zoe and Angelo. He was murdered in cold blood on the road near the house where his children live," the Facebook statement read. Lukasz further created a crowdfunding page on WhyDonate, asking for donations to "raise funds for legal fees, the repatriation of Przemek's remains to Poland, and related expenses." "Our family is heartbroken, and we are doing everything we can to ensure that justice is served," he added on the web fundraising page. "To pursue legal action and support ongoing investigations... These efforts come with significant and urgent costs that my mother and I cannot manage on our own," Lukasz's WhyDonate statement read. According to UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business profile, Przemyslaw Jeziorski held the Egon and Joan von Kaschnitz Distinguished Professorship in Business Administration. 43-year-old UC Berkeley professor killed in Greece, family says

Przemyslaw Jeziorski, an associate professor of marketing at the University of California, Berkeley, was killed in Greece on July 4, his family said. Jeziorski, 43, was headed to visit his two children when he was killed on a street near where his children live, his brother Lukasz Jeziorski said in a statement on Facebook. UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business on July 14 confirmed Jeziorski's death, which it said occurred in the outskirts of Athens. The school said Greek and international authorities are investigating Jeziorski's death as a homicide. USA TODAY has reached out to the Hellenic Police. Lukasz Jeziorski said on a fundraising page that investigations into his brother's death are ongoing. "He was the victim of a terrible crime, and the perpetrator is still at large," Lukasz Jeziorski said on the page. "Our family is heartbroken, and we are doing everything we can to ensure that justice is served." Przemyslaw Jeziorski "was a loving father to two young children and a beloved professor," his brother wrote. "He was a leading scholar in marketing science, industrial organization and data analytics," Lukasz Jeziorski said. "He loved teaching and sharing his passion for the intricacies of marketing analytics and marketing science with his students." Przemyslaw Jeziorski was born on April 24, 1982, and raised in Gdynia, Poland, UC Berkeley said. To colleagues and students, he went by Przemek or PJ. Growing up, Jeziorski loved metal music, sci-fi movies and playing guitar, his brother told UC Berkeley. Jeziorski earned bachelor's and master's degrees in quantitative methods and information systems from the Warsaw School of Economics in Poland, according to UC Berkeley. He then moved to the U.S. to complete two more master's degrees − one in economics and one in mathematics − from the University of Arizona. After, he completed a doctoral program in economics at Stanford's Graduate School of Business. Jenny Chatman, dean of UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business, said in a statement that she is "heartbroken" by the news of Jeziorski's death. 'While authorities are investigating what happened, our focus is on supporting our community during this difficult period," Chatman said. "My heart goes out to Przemek's family and loved ones. We will miss him.' In tributes shared by UC Berkeley, Jeziorski was remembered by colleagues, students and friends. "He was an amazing person, friend, and colleague. He was a loving father of two young children and always there if someone needed help,' said Zsolt Katona, another marketing professor at UC Berkeley. Olga Adamkiewicz, a high school classmate of Jeziorski's, told UC Berkeley that he was "an exceptionally gifted and hard-working person." 'Beneath his sharp intellect, he was a kind and compassionate soul," Adamkiewicz said. "He was a dreamer at heart, filled with hopes and ambitions, with an innate curiosity about the world.'
