Greek authorities charge 5 in killing of UC Berkeley professor, including ex-wife, reports say
Przemyslaw "Przemek" Jeziorski, 43, an associate professor at the Haas School of Business, was fatally shot in a suburb of Athens on July 4. Reports from Greece and Poland, where Jeziorski is from, said he was near his ex-wife's home when a masked gunman shot him at least five times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the Greek newspaper Kathimerini, the 43-year-old woman and four suspected accomplices appeared before a prosecutor Thursday morning.
The woman, an economist who owns a real estate management company, is accused of ordering the killing. Her current partner, a 35-year-old man, is believed to have shot Jeziorski.
Three other men, only identified as two Albanian nationals and a man from Bulgaria, are also accused in the case.
The newspaper reported that the ex-wife has denied involvement, while police said they have allegedly obtained confessions from the other suspects.
Jeziorski had two children with his ex-wife, who returned to Greece after their divorce six years ago. According to her attorney, the former couple were in the midst of a child custody dispute.
CBS News Bay Area has not been able to independently confirm these reports.
Jeziorski had taught at the university since 2012 and previously studied at the Warsaw School of Economics, the University of Arizona, the University of Chicago and the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Outside of his work at the university, Jeziorski co-founded the startup Keybee, a service that helps manage short-term rentals.
"He had a passion for teaching, and during his 13 years at Berkeley Haas he taught data analytics skills to more than 1,500 MBA and PhD students," the business school said in a statement about his passing.
Miguel Villas-Boas, one of Jeziorski's colleagues, said, "Przemek was one of the most-if not the most-knowledgeable experts on empirical analysis in marketing in the world, so this is a tremendous loss to the field and to Haas.
He added, "He was generous with his time, extremely caring about the Haas community, courageous to tackle important problems, full of grace and gentleness, and a loving father."

'I've been here for over 20 years, it's saddening,' neighbor Milton Franklin told WABC from his apartment door, explaining that he had seen the girl's mother go in the ambulance with her infant daughter, who was crying. Prison with no parole eligibility until 2034 for man who killed migrant worker girlfriend
Life imprisonment with no chance of parole until September 2034 is the sentence for a Honduran man who stabbed his migrant worker girlfriend 48 times. David Enrique Espinoza Montes, 41, showed no emotion as he received his sentence in a courtroom at the Superior Court of Justice in Windsor on Wednesday. Justice Joseph Perfetto described Espinoza Montes' crime as "particularly callous and senseless," and said the attack itself was "gratuitous and vicious." "There is no question (the victim) was terrified," Perfetto told the court. "There was no mercy shown to her." But the judge said he believes that Espinoza Montes' expressions of regret are sincere. "In my view, Mr. Espinoza Montes has insight into his offending, and the deep impacts associated with it," Perfetto told the court. "I am satisfied that Mr. Espinoza Montes is remorseful for his conduct." The killing of 33-year-old Shermaine Carling occurred on Sept. 29, 2022, in a rooming house in Leamington. According to the agreed upon statement of facts, Espinoza Montes attacked Carling in a jealous rage after learning she had been seeing another man. Espinoza Montes inflicted 48 stab wounds on Carling's neck, torso, and back using a kitchen knife and a pair of scissors. Immediately after the attack, Espinoza Montes remained at the scene and surrendered himself to police. Earlier this year, Espinoza Montes pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree murder. The charge carries an automatic life sentence in Canada. Perfetto agreed with a joint sentencing recommendation from the Crown and the defence that Espinoza Montes should not have eligibility for parole until 12 years of incarceration. Espinoza Montes has been in custody since his arrest almost three years ago. Perfetto said the offender entering a guilty plea was the most significant mitigating factor in the sentencing, as it spared Carling's family — which includes two children — from the hardship of a trial. Perfetto noted that Espinoza Montes had no prior criminal record, and has been participating in counselling and anger management programs at the South West Detention Centre. "Other than this offence, there is no evidence that he is a violent person," the judge said. The judge acknowledged that this case can be categorized as intimate partner violence. Assistant Crown attorney Nicole Stortini agreed. "It is a very sad case of intimate partner violence," she said outside the courthouse. "The family is going through palpable grief, and they were very clear in expressing their grief." Fellow assistant Crown attorney Jayme Lesperance pointed to the victim impact statements provided by Carling's family members. "(This murder) had a profound impact on children, cousins, siblings, and parents. We could never help with this wake of grief. We just hope this gives them some finality." Espinoza Montes' status in Canada remains uncertain. He came to Essex County from the Honduras under a temporary foreign worker visa. But at the time of the murder, that visa had expired, and he was in the process of a refugee application. The judge said he agrees with the Crown and the defence that immigration consequences should have no bearing on this sentencing. Outside the courthouse, Lesperance said the Crown doesn't know if Esperanza Montes will be deported, and that will be matter for an immigration courts. Justice Perfetto reserved his final comments for the victim's family in the Phillippines, who attended the courtroom virtually. "It is difficult if not impossible for this court to console you," Perfetto told them. "There is nothing this court can do to undo the past... I wish that were different." "However, I hope that as time passes, you will find healing and peace."

Two arrested after shooting near park in Denver metro area
Two teenagers have been arrested after a shooting near a park in the Denver metro area Tuesday evening. According to the Thornton Police Department, officers were near Walton Health Park when they heard multiple gunshots around 6:30 p.m. When they arrived at the scene in the 11800 block of York Street, they reportedly encountered an 18-year-old teen who refused to comply with their verbal commands and ran away on foot. The officers said they chased him and used a Taser, then took him into custody. Police detained two more people at the scene, whom they believed were connected with the shooting. Investigators determined the 16-year-old boy they detained was also a suspect. Soon after, police were notified of a walk-in gunshot victim at a nearby hospital. They said the victim's injuries were not life-threatening. Both the suspects and the victim reportedly knew each other. Authorities arrested the 18 and 16-year-olds, the former of whom is facing charges for illegal discharge of a firearm and aggravated assault. He was released pending further investigation. The younger suspect was booked into the Juvenile Detention Center and is facing charges of aggravated assault, illegal discharge of a firearm and possession of a handgun by a juvenile.
