‘ALL LANES CLOSED': Expect partial, full closures of Niagara-bound QEW over Burlington Skyway this weekend
The Niagara-bound Burlington Skyway will not only have two lanes closed all weekend, but also two periods where it will be completely closed. The often-busy stretch of the QEW has been pegged for a series of partial closures for the Niagara-bound lanes this summer by the Ministry of Transportation, including this July 25-28 weekend. The closure of the two left lanes of the Niagara-bound QEW over the Burlington Skyway, according to the transportation ministry through its website, will take place starting from Friday, July 25 at 10 p.m. right through to its 'anticipated end time' of Monday, July 28 at 5 a.m. But for this weekend the ministry has also added a new twist — two periods where it will be 'all lanes closed' for the Niagara-bound QEW over the Burlington Skyway. The first complete closure of the Niagara-bound QEW is slated for Saturday, July 26 at 1 a.m. until an 'anticipated end time' of 3 a.m. The second complete closure is slated for Monday, July 28, at 1 a.m. until an 'anticipated end time' of 4 a.m. A ministry spokesperson could not be reached today to confirm the closures announced on their website, but Halton Regional Police said they received similar information. 'The most recent information we've received is that the Burlington Skyway will have two lane closures from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. on Monday, however there will be full closure of the QEW Fort Erie Bound at the Skyway from 1 to 3 a.m. Saturday morning and 1 to 4 a.m. Monday morning,' stated a Halton Police media relations officer in a July 24 email. Partial weekend lane closures have been regularly scheduled for the Niagara-bound QEW throughout this summer and three more are slated for August. The ministry also adds that 'more closures may be required after August.' It says, in its news release , to 'expect delays throughout the area when lanes are closed.' The ongoing weekend lane closures are 'for improvement work.' It noted that 'closures depend on weather and work schedules, and may be postponed or changed throughout the project.' Closures can be confirmed online at (as of late Thursday afternoon, the closures were still slated to happen). The City of Burlington had asked the ministry to release the tentative dates for the weekend closures to provide better notice. Read our story here. Error! 2 suspects sought after townhouse units in Burlington intentionally set on fire for the 2nd time
A Halton Regional Police cruiser is seen in this undated photo. Halton police are looking for two suspects after several townhouses in Burlington were deliberately set on fire for the second time early Friday morning. Emergency services were called to a Branthaven Homes development on Turnberry Road near Appleby Line and Taywood Drive at 2 a.m. Police said two suspects had attended the area and doused recently completed townhouse units in gasoline. The suspects also splashed gasoline on an occupied unit. Police said the pair then lit the gasoline and fled the scene. The occupants of the one home were able to escape and did not sustain physical injuries, police said. Fire crews arrived and shortly contained the flames. 'These same units were targeted for an arson in October of 2024,' police said in a news release on Friday. Police have limited descriptions of the suspects, who they say are males dressed in all black with face coverings and hoods. They are asking anyone with information, including dashcam and surveillance footage between the hours of 12:45 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. on July 11, to call 905-825-4777 ext. 2316 or Crime Stoppers anonymously.

Police investigating 2 suspicious incidents in Burlington after young people followed home
Halton police say they are investigating after young people were followed in two separate incidents in Burlington on the same day. Police said on June 10, two young children, one male and one female, were followed home from St. John Elementary School on Brant Street by an unknown male . 'The male was standing and waiting with parents at dismissal time but was not accompanied by a child, nor did he pick up a child. When the two children began their walk home, the unknown male followed closely behind them for more than a kilometre,' Halton police said in a news release issued Thursday. Police said the man did not speak to the children and when the arrived to the street where they lived, he turned and walked back in the direction of the school. Investigators said the man appeared to be about 40 years old with brown skin and was tall with an average build. He was seen wearing glasses, Airpods, a black striped shirt, blue jeans, and white shoes. Later that day at around 7:30 p.m., police said a female teenager was followed in the area of Headon Forest. 'The teenager was walking her dog on a hydro path that runs between Headon Forest Drive and Deer Run Avenue and passed a male sitting on a bench. After she passed, the man got up and began to follow her,' the news release read. Police said the man was wearing a hoodie and appeared to be attempting to hide his face. 'The female became nervous and ran back to her home. Once in her yard, the male remained in the area for a short period of time,' police said. According to a description provided by investigators, the man had brown skin, a thin build, and was approximately six-feet tall with a black beard. He was wearing a grey hoodie with writing on the back, black pants, and white Adidas shoes with black stripes, police said. It is not clear if the same male is involved in both incidents, investigators noted. Police are asking anyone with information about the suspicious occurrences, or those with dash camera or surveillance camera footage of the areas involved, to contact the 3 District Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-825-4777, ext. 2316.

2 teens charged, police reviewing footage after fireworks set off in Oakville crowd on Canada Day
Viewer video sent to CP24 shows people scrambling from police after fireworks were set off in a crowd on Canada Day. Halton police say they are reviewing footage to try identify a number of young people who set off fireworks in an Oakville crowd on Canada Day. Some 30,000 people attended the area of Bronte Heritage Park on Canada Day, police estimated. While the vast majority were well behaved, police said they responded to several 'isolated acts of disorder' in the evening. 'While the vast majority conducted themselves responsibly and respectfully, and enjoyed the festivities hosted by the Town, large groups of youth assembled across Lakeshore Road away from Bronte Heritage Park well before the official fireworks display was scheduled to commence,' police said in a news release Thursday. 'As darkness approached, several fireworks were dangerously and unlawfully discharged by select youth in this crowd.' In viewer video submitted to CP24, fireworks can be seen shooting off above the street, with a crowd of people then running and screaming as officers move toward them. Halton police said officers were attempting to disperse the group, to move them out of the downtown area away from the family-friendly events. 'These efforts were, unfortunately, met with defiance from some of the youth, resulting in some additional localized disorder which was quickly and effectively addressed by police,' they said in the release. No injuries were reported. Two teens were taken into custody in connection with the incident. A 16-year-old has been charged with weapons dangerous (bear spray) under the Youth Criminal Justice Act while a 15-year-old was arrested for causing a disturbance. Both teens have since been charged with municipal bylaw offences around setting off fireworks. 'Police are reviewing additional video, some of which has been provided by members of the public, in an attempt to identify others responsible for acts of public disorder,' police said. Police are asking anyone with footage or further information to reach out to investigators.
