Dirt bike rider assaulted with shovel along Burlington trail: police
Halton Regional Police say the incident occurred at around 5 p.m. on June 22 on a rural property near Cedar Springs Road and Grand Boulevard.
According to police, a young male was riding his dirt bike in the area when he observed an unknown male at the side of the trail.
'As the victim slowed to pass he was struck in the arm by a shovel and tackled by the male suspect causing the victim to fall to the ground,' police said in a news release issued Monday.
The verbal argument ensued and the suspect took off on a blue dirt bike, police said.
The victim was not physically injured.
The suspect has been described by police as a white male with a brown moustache who was dressed in dark clothing and wearing a baseball cap.
Police said the area is 'known to be frequented by dirt bike riders,' and investigators are asking anyone who may be able to identify the suspect to contact Const. Chase Gourley, of 3 District Burlington, at Chase.gourley@haltonpolice.ca.

Arkansas man sentenced to life without parole for 2024 mass shooting at grocery store

A state judge sentenced Travis Eugene Posey to four life sentences for each count of capital murder. Posey was also sentenced to 220 years in prison for 11 counts of attempted capital murder. Posey pleaded guilty last month to the shooting, which occurred last summer at the Mad Butcher grocery store in Fordyce, a city of about 3,200 people located 65 miles (104 kilometres) south of Little Rock. Judge Spencer Singleton handed down the sentence after testimony from victims' family members during a hearing in Fordyce. 'You don't deserve to be part of our story,' Hanna Sturgis said during the hearing, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported. Sturgis' father, Roy Sturgis, was killed during the shooting. Posey, who did not speak during Monday's hearing, has been held without bond since the shooting and previously pleaded not guilty to the same charges. Prosecutors and police have not publicly identified any motive for Posey, who was shot and injured by officers who exchanged fire with him. Police have said he did not appear to have a personal connection to any of the victims. During the midday shooting, Posey carried a 12-gauge shotgun, a pistol and a bandolier with dozens of extra shotgun rounds, authorities said. He fired most, if not all, of the rounds using the shotgun, opening fire at people in the parking lot before entering the store and firing 'indiscriminately' at customers and employees, police said. Multiple victims were found inside the store and in the parking lot, police said. Posey lived in New Edinburg, a small town of about 150 people located southeast of Fordyce. One of the women injured in the shooting has sued Posey, seeking monetary damages to cover medical care, lost earnings and other expenses as a result of the shooting. Attorneys for the woman have requested that a judge enter a default judgment against Posey, as he has not responded to the complaint. A judge has not ruled on that request. The shooting temporarily closed the only grocery store in Fordyce, prompting food distribution sites to be set up around the community. The Mad Butcher reopened 11 days after the shooting.

Colorado funeral home owner accused of sending fake ashes pleads guilty to fraud

(Muskogee County Sheriff's Office via AP) DENVER — A Colorado funeral home owner admitted to sending grieving families fake ashes and defrauding the federal government out of nearly US$900,000 in a plea agreement with federal prosecutors Monday. Carie Hallford, who pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud in federal court, faces a maximum of 20 years in prison. As part of the agreement, Hallford admitted to sending families dry concrete in place of ashes and stashing decomposing bodies in a room-temperature building. U.S. District Judge Nina Wang rejected a previous agreement between Hallford and prosecutors last year. Wang will decide whether to accept the current agreement that includes dropping 14 other federal charges. Hallford's sentencing hearing is scheduled for Dec. 3 and prosecutors are asking for no more than 15 years. In a separate case in state court, Carie and her husband, Jon Hallford, are charged with 191 counts of corpse abuse for burying the wrong body in two cases and stashing about 190 others in a room-temperature building in Penrose, Colorado, about a two-hour drive south of Denver. Some of the bodies languished for four years, many stacked atop each other in various stages of decay. Jon Hallford has pleaded guilty to fraud in the federal case and to the 191 counts of corpse abuse in the state case. Carie Hallford initially pleaded guilty to the corpse abuse counts in the state case but has since withdrawn her plea. Hallford's next hearing in that case is Sept. 4. When police arrived, one man was found dead outside and the residence in flames. On Saturday, police announced that two more bodies had been found inside the home, which was destroyed by fire. Please try again A shelter-in-place advisory was posted on social media around 9:30 p.m. Friday. Police warned they were searching for a suspect in a fatal shooting and house fire. 'Officers are responding to a potentially armed person in distress,' according to the alert posted to social media. 'Please stay indoors in a secure location and/or avoid the area.' The advisory was lifted at 1:45 a.m. Saturday, though people were advised to stay alert and report anything suspicious to police. 'The individual previously considered armed and potentially dangerous has not been located, but is not believed to pose an immediate threat to public safety,' the OPP said. Mitchell Gray, 29, of Bracebridge, is wanted for murder. Many of the details of the shelter-in-place are part of the ongoing investigation, OPP Sgt. Joe Brisebois, of the OPP Central Region, said in an email to National Post. However, Brisebois said the suspect and the victim found when police first arrived at the scene were known to each other. 'The identity of the additional two deceased is pending the results of the post mortem, and that may take a number of weeks,' Brisebois said. Investigators do not believe that there is any threat to public safety – but ask if anyone has additional information or knows the whereabout of Mitchell Gray, to contact police or Crime Stoppers. According to Gray belongs to a family that has farmed in the tight-knit hamlet northwest of Bracebridge for generations. 'Everybody here is in shock,' one woman who took shelter in her basement told MuskokaTODAY's Mark Clairmont. 'They're a lovely family. It's pretty awful for them to deal with. Very sad.' Police searched sheds and barns and canvassed the area, according to the report. Police helicopters were seen over farms Friday night. Some people commented on social media that the shelter-in-place alert appeared to downplay potential risks. 'Three people dead. Suspect on the run,' read one post on the Facebook. 'No threat to the public?'
