Drink driver banned after swerving along busy Powys A-road
A prison officer seen swerving in the road and almost colliding with an oncoming car has been banned for 18 months for drink driving. Leah Hamblett, 29, was pulled over by police on mobile patrol along the A483 near Pool Quay, Welshpool at 2am on June 15. After failing a roadside breath test, she was arrested and taken to the police station where she gave a reading of 74 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. Hamblett, from Warrington, pleaded guilty to driving a Vauxhall Corsa when the alcohol level was above the 35mcgm limit when she appeared before Welshpool Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, July 1. "I'm gutted because I'd only passed my driving test two years ago. "I know what I did was wrong and I'll accept any punishment." Hamblett, who was representing herself in court, explained that following the breakdown of a long-term relationship earlier this year, she had received hospital treatment. She explained that she had been drinking and "was not dealing with things very well" after the crisis team's involvement in her rehabilitation ended in late May. Hamblett said she "doesn't know what to do" without her car which she needs for work at a prison, and she won't be able to take up her recent promotion at another prison. "I can't get on public transport because of my anxiety," she added. "I'm embarrassed with myself and I'm sorry".

Oldham: Outrage as Covid memorial smashed up by vandals
A memorial to commemorate the efforts of NHS staff and other key workers during the coronavirus pandemic has been smashed up by plaque and tree, planted in 2020 at the gardens by Shaw town centre in Oldham, have been discovered uprooted and broken to Councillor Louie Hamblett said whoever was responsible had gone "out of their way" to target the features, with the incident reported to the police. Putting up a replacement for the damaged plaque and tree is set to be discussed by Shaw & Crompton Town Council later this week. Hamblett said he was "devastated" by the damage, which was reported days before the fifth anniversary of the first lockdown in the UK. He said: "Someone has gone out their way to target a dedicated memorial that thanks our hard-working NHS and blue light services during one of the most challenging times since the Second World War."The councillor said he remembers inviting ward sister Rachel Diskin and ward clerk Alyson Hopkinson from Royal Oldham Hospital to sit on the memorial bench in the area when it was unveiled. Each had treated Covid patients throughout the pandemic, he said. Hamblett said he has urged the parish council to "make good and ensure that a Covid memorial, tree and bench be put back to good, like for like". Fifth Dudley councillor announces departure from Labour Party in a week
ANOTHER Dudley councillor has announced he has resigned from the Labour Party, bringing the total to five this week. Councillor for Quarry Bank and Dudley Wood, Luke Hamblett has left the party 'with a heavy heart'. Cllr Hamblett's departure marks the fifth resignation the Dudley Labour Group has seen this week, with the group's former leader, Cllr Pete Lowe, and Cllrs Peter Drake, Karl Denning and Matt Cook having all also stepped away from the party. It comes following concerns raised over the party's planned welfare reforms that were announced on Tuesday (March 18). Cllr Hamblett cited concerns about removing winter fuel payments, raising National Insurance contributions for employers and the two-child benefit cap as reasons for his resignation, saying 'enough is enough'. Read more: Three more Dudley councillors resign from Labour Party after former leader quits He said: 'With dismay at first and then disgust, I watched as a Labour government kept the two-child benefit cap, removed winter fuel payments from millions of pensioners and are now targeting people with disabilities.' Cllr Hamblett also accused the party of 'getting it wrong with the economy', adding that as an accountant himself, he 'can already see the devastating impact which the National Insurance rise will have on small to medium-sized businesses' in the borough. He also accused the Dudley Labour Group of being 'rudderless and afraid to speak out' locally. Cllr Hamblett will now sit as an independent representative on Dudley Council. The West Midlands Labour declined to comment on Cllr Hamblett's resignation from the party. In light of Cllr Lowe's departure on Wednesday (March 19), the first that came to light this week, a spokesperson said: 'Labour inherited a broken welfare system from the Conservatives, which risked a generation of young people being written off and millions of people who want to work not getting the support they need. 'Labour will deliver a social security system that is fit for the future. One that is fairer, sustainable and that provides vital support to those who need it most."

Quidnessett seawall proposal rejected, but attorney general says reform is needed
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) said it is now expecting a plan from Quidnessett Country Club in North Kingstown to tear down its controversial seawall. This, after the council rejected a proposal Tuesday that would have allowed the wall to stay. While environmentalists and R.I. Attorney General Peter Neronha believe the decision was the right move, they said the council shouldn't have considered the country club's proposal in the first place. 'The council is infamous in its delay and time-consuming processes, which are very political,' said Topher Hamblett, executive director of Save the Bay. 'This is one of the many reasons why we need to get rid of the council.' In September, 12 News spoke with Quidnessett Country Club's Janice Mathews about the 600-foot wall. She said they had tried to follow the CRMC's guidance for years, but after a bad storm in December 2022, the country club decided to build a seawall without the CRMC's permission because it was losing its property to erosion. 'The last 30 years we've lost over 47 feet,' she said. 'We have to move the 14th fairway to the point where we can't move it anywhere else.' The country club declined to comment on Tuesday's decision. BACKGROUND: RI country club asks state to remove restrictions on illegally built sea wall Hamblett said seawalls can pose several problems because they can be detrimental to the environment, block access to the coastline and can make erosion worse for neighbors. On Tuesday, the CRMC rejected a proposal from the country club to change the property's water type, which currently limits construction because it abuts conservation land, falling in line with the council's expert recommendations made last year. Hamblett said the decision comes after nearly two years of delays and accused the council of dragging out a response. MORE: Save the Bay accuses CRMC of power abuse for canceling controversial seawall meetings The attorney general said this controversy is an example of a broader problem he has with the council, as it continues to deal with the growing effects of climate change. For roughly three years, Neronha has been advocating for legislation that would require experts to mange the organization, rather than the governor's appointees. However, reform legislation has failed to pass the General Assembly. 'The governor should be championing this legislation,' Neronha said. 'He's ultimately responsible for the work that gets done to protect Rhode Islanders and the environment.' Spokespeople for House Speaker Joseph Shekarchi and Senate President Dominick Ruggerio said both leaders are open to considering legislation. The CRMC declined to comment on the proposed reform. Governor Dan McKee's office did not respond to a request for comment. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
